Why "NOPENOPENOPE"?  I would love to be a passenger on that plane, but I don't think they'll be selling coach fares.

The same reason that, for me, a glass-bottomed plane would be a big metal tube full of NOPE. It's one thing to be 6 miles off the ground, it's another thing altogether to really see it.

I can't decide if subby just looked at the picture, thought it was all one big window, and posted without any reading, or if subby is just an extreme claustrophobe.

Neither scenario works in their favor. If #1, then they're an idiot. If #2, then they shouldn't be looking at airplanes anyway, which still makes them an idiot.

Wow, im afraid of heights and have a fear of flying, but that is so cool i would pay the £10k or whatever it is to fly on that thing.

Actually i'm not really afraid of flying, just every time I get on a plane I'm a little bit more nervous than the last, as I think if I'm going to die in a plane crash each journey brings me closer to that fate. So by the time this plane comes out I'll probably be just about there. I once explained that theory to a friend on the plane. When we were getting off the person behind spoke up to say he'd heard what I'd said, was an already terrified flyer, but would now never fly again, as I was right... even though what I said was clearly nonsense, but I guess nonsense that makes sense to people who are uncomfortable with flying. I'm just doing my bit to lessen airport traffic. I'm a hero really. Really I just hate being out of control. I'd love to fly, and be the pilot, and if anything goes wrong I want it to be me (after training) to be the one who deals with it. I love driving, I hate being a passenger, same thing. I trust myself, because I know how great I am. I don't trust anyone else fully until they've proven themselves to me. Being in the pilots seat is almost proof enough, but they might not be drunk enough. You never know.

Now that's what I call a tangent, 86. Also waffle. I shouldn't drink at lunch.

I'm going with lazy writer talking about the first supersonic private jet, this thing is way small for 'commercial' use.

I guess they read "hypersonic" and didn't know it was a real word, so they "corrected" it.

They were probably talking about that size of aircraft. Then again, the G650 had to go supersonic for a brief period to prove it can handle it's declared top speed. I might not get this exactly right: Gulfstream says the G650 can go up to Mach .97. The FAA mandates that planes be able to safely go Mach .04 higher than declared Mach numbers, thus the G650 had to briefly maintain Mach 1.01.

Which means that you can always fly in sunny sky conditions.  Or you can have panoramas of West Virginia coal country.  Or wall to wall porn.

Yes. They forgot the Concorde, and you both forgot pretty much the entire history of aviation after Chuck Yeager. It's probably arguable which the first supersonic jet actually was (depending on if you only count production aircraft, whether or not it was supposed to do it regularly or simply could under optimal conditions and a steep dive, etc.)

The TL;DR version is that Newsie is an idiot.

Unless there is some amazing new 3D tech in those screens the "view" is going to be pretty weird. If you are sitting in the right spot you will see what is a fair representation of the correct view, except not in 3D. But someone sitting at the back or the front is going to see what is the extreme left or extreme right of the view of the guy in the middle. In other words you're going to look directly out at ninety degrees to the direction of travel but see in front of you what is actually ten or eighty degrees. When the plane comes in to land it's going to look like they are flying sideways and trying to land across the runway.

What would be better is if each seating position had a 'screen' and then the next seating position repeated that view, whereas TFA suggests it is one big panoramic view. And that isn't going to work unless they have perfected some amazing new 3D screen. And if they have then why bother with the jet, they could make billions selling the screens.

Except it's not a window. Your brain isnt going to see a window, no matter how hard the marketing people try to make you think it will. It's just gonna see a stupid tv screen gimmick that doesn't look anything like a window. When you move your head around what appears outside a window changes. This is just gonna keep showing the same stupid view.

I'd love to see a new supersonic airliner (or even private jets, cause I'm a plane geek), and while they are technically feasible or could be made practical with enough effort... I've never seen a design less want-worthy than this.

The thing looks like it was rendered by someone who's never seen a supersonic airplane before and had to have one described to him by a five year old.

Put some effort into this, people.

It would be expensive to install, but Maintenance would probably be less than the cost of cleaning windows.
Cameras and flat screens are pretty reliable these days.

/It might be a better solution for something like a tunnel train, where the view can be pretty disappointing.

And if you're looking for a little shut-eye, passengers will be able to dim the screens or change them to "one of the many scenic images stored in the system."

And here's where the whole ting breaks down... One continuous LCD/LED panel is fine, but a dozen spread throughout the plane, and you're gong to have color and brightness variations. On top of that, you're going to have exterior, exterior, exterior, exterior, exterior, exterior, waterfall, exterior, exterior, grand canyon, exterior, kittens. It's really not going to be all that exciting when people can change it to a bunch of different things.

i think it's a 'sounds neat on paper' one of those things where it sounds good until you try and get people to cooperate enough to fly on the damned thing, but with only 12-18 passengers, maybe they'll actually all agree. Definitely won't work on a commercial sized application. Half of the screens would be broken at any given time.

Called the Spike S-512, it was conceptualized by Spike Aerospace, Inc. The company said that in addition to the windowless feature, the jet will reach international destinations faster than any jet currently on the market.

"spike aerospace?" uh huh. "conceptualized?" riiiiight.

in other words, somebody just drew it up without any actual engineering behind it.
