HOAs as we know them today need to die.

They let the sign stay up 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after he comes home. I know HOA can be jerks, but what's the problem here?

In many cultures, if you don't start to welcome someone at least 4 weeks before their arrival, you have gravely insulted them and turned your back on the spirit of hospitality. In return they have the right to take one of your limbs or have sex with your sister.

... never mind.

Another story of a reasonable HOA. Seems like most of these stories turn out that way, actually.

Navy vet here, frequent hater of my own HOA. The details of the story leave me feeling sick.

Because I kinda agree with the HOA. *Shudders*

Holy shiat. Really?

I was gonna suggest going all Reek, Reek, it rhymes with leek on the HOA, but 4 weeks? That's mire than reasonable.

It's not really a welcome sign if it's there permanently.

grimlock1972: HOAs as we know them today need to die.

THE sad part is that they started for completely REASONABLE reasons.
Mowing the common areas.  Paying for the pool.  Snow removal.

Completely rational things.

Fast forward.
NOW you need to worry about the blacks and the browns, AKA, maintaining property value.
Maintaining Property Value is completely rational.
Otherwise you get "Pacific Heights"!
Neighbors run down the values, you get forced out cause it sucks to live there, they buy your shiathole for cheap, FIX the "values", and make a killing.

FARKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Now you have insane buzy bodies, fence heights and colors, and lawn types, and sign limits ...............

WHY?
no seriously
The sign is small, and adheres to the size requirements.

The problem?
They put the sign up early?

For the same reason that Christmas lights cant stay up year-round.  We don't all celebrate the same occasions, lady.

This is one of those rare examples of an HOA actually serving its purpose.

Where is this crazy HOA that I hear about every now and then. I never hear of anything like that in my state. Its like the homeowners boogie man or something, always happening somewhere else.

2014-02-21 05:34:01 AM
One former Marine placed a flag and a yellow ribbon on the subdivision sign, both of which were quickly removed.

Haha, I picture this as some biddy who has never had 'power / control' in her life, comes driving up to the entrance, slamming on her brakes as she sees this decoration. She exits the car, walks over to the sign and rips the 'offending alteration' down. She then proceeds back to her car, tossing it in the backseat, atop her neatly organized groceries, and then makes a beeline to another board member's house, so they can gossip speculate about who might have done this heinous act of treachery.

Fark HOAs. Fark them in their stupid asses.

I was prepared to get mad, but this lady seems like the crazy one. This is like the difference between parking your car in your driveway and letting your totally defunct non-running car rust to death on your lawn. A 'welcome home' sign put up around the time when a person is coming home serves a purpose. Leaving that sign there forever doesn't serve a purpose for normal people, and turns it from a functional object to junk on your lawn.

This is a weird one.  The topic tricks you instantly pacification over the vet but the rules are really no big deal.

This seems to be attention whoring and creating a fuss over nothing.

What is the point of a welcome weeks before someone arrives?  That's just stupid manners.  What's the etiquette book say on welcomes and goodbyes?

IDEA!

Get a "Welcome!" door mat, those things are a perfect size and can be out all the time!

You -1, HOA - 0!

2014-02-21 06:03:10 AM
I had it pegged the moment I read the fark headline.  Who leaves a "welcome home" sign up for long enough for the HOA to take action on?

Really, all it has to be up for is that weekend they're coming home.  The two week rule is way more than enough time.

Statistically, the HOA had to have been in the right eventually, and this is one of those rare freak occurrences.

2014-02-21 06:06:25 AM
So they treat their sign like I treat my christmas lights. I'm always ready for Christmas.

This.
Put it up the day he comes home, take it down the next morning. Why have it up if he's not even there to see it?

2014-02-21 06:07:03 AM
I bet they don't take down their Christmas lights until after Easter.

2014-02-21 06:07:47 AM
So, I got's a question.  Being unfamiliar with that which is the HOAs in general (I had to look up the abbreviation), would these associations normally biatch about yellow ribbons or US Flags being presented in a tasteful "I honor my deployed _______" setting?  Then, posting the sign 2 weeks prior to return?  Not all houses should be dress-right-dress.

"There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same."

MagicMissile: Where is this crazy HOA that I hear about every now and then. I never hear of anything like that in my state. Its like the homeowners boogie man or something, always happening somewhere else.

They seem pretty common in new, large-scale suburban/rural housing developments. If you're in an area developed before the rise of HOA, you might not be aware of them. I'm only aware of a couple around me because of friends who live in neighborhoods recently built on former farmland, a few miles outside the city. While silly HOA controversies make national news, for the most part it seems like they cause minor annoyances, no worse than equivalent neighborly annoyances in areas without HOA, so you probably wouldn't hear about them in local news.

2014-02-21 06:15:47 AM
If the HOA has enough time to get a lawyer involved then your banner/sign has been up too damn long.

2014-02-21 06:15:58 AM
Don't live in an HOA controlled area if you are prone to bouts of butthurt.

2014-02-21 06:25:41 AM
It's almost as if they regret signing up for it in the first place. Pity.

OOBE Juan Kenobi: AverageAmericanGuy: Tell me more about how you're fighting for our freedoms, soldierboy.

Wait a minute... The US has around 900 bases around the world - this is hardly enough to protect our freedoms. You should back off a bit, bub.

900 sounds like an overblown number.  As if it's counting things like stations(say, a military radar array at a civilian airport) or purely admin buildings in a civilian neighborhood(Ie recruiting centers and uso buildings), or things like the pentagon(while large, it's not a "base")  and national guard stations that are more or less minimally staffed warehouses most of the time.

Most states have 2-3 bases(actual bases, not stations, but gated in little towns with thousands of people working and living right there, self contained community, food to gas to Services(it military ran gym, chow hall, movie theater, library, etc)  for the varying branches.

Cut off from the world, a base can last a very very long time.  Stations, FOB(ie the temporary tent cities) should not count as "bases"(even though it's in FOB's name), as most of it's inhabitants and equipment come from actual bases and reserves.

That would be like calling the people at a pot luck a new family in the neighborhood, no, it's just an occasion, a gathering of existing people for the most part, not a new and seperate entity.  As soon as the purpose is done, it's dissolved.(disclaimer: military soon)

Each branch has maybe 20-30 bases abroad.

You're looking more in the 300-500 range.  UN functions and joint bases of different nations shouldn't count, as they're more of a social arrangement than something we do on our own, not fully permanent, not a stable asset.

I worked in the HOA industry for far too long. Living in an HOA is like saying "Federal, state, and local government laws aren't enough. I'd like an extra layer of laws, rules, and regulations to follow. Also, I'd like to give up all recourse as a homeowner to protect myself. Now if they want to special assess me for $10,000, they can and there's nothing I can do!"

Choosing to live in an HOA is like choosing to give up your rights as a homeowner. They are a blight.

/glad I'm out of that industry. I still have nightmares.

2014-02-21 06:58:26 AM
Putting a sign up months before someone comes home is nothing to do with welcoming anyone, and entirely about screaming to the neighbours "My son's in the military. Love me! Love me!"
