catmandu: Via Infinito: I think we are going to look for an adult male cat next time.

Like what_now said: they tend to pick you out, but on the other hand it is often what you were hoping for anyway. After Mandu went over the bridge, I went to the shelter to check out what kitties were there. I only said I was looking for an older kitten or young adult that liked to snuggle but secretly I was also hoping for a black male. When the shelter volunteer suggested I meet Lenny I agreed, and within the first minute of having him in my arms I was in love. He was 6 months and a snuggler. It turns out he was also a black male. (BTW, he told me his name was really Hector)

[i283.photobucket.com image 750x563]

Hector looks great catmandu, congrats! It took me a long time to get over the loss of Mungo Jerry and find room in my heart for a new furry friend, but it's easy loving the darkness isn't it?.. ;)

Fell asleep on the couch watching s2 of House of Cards last night and regular as clockwork Julian work me up with wet, droolly, rubs on my chin stubble at 6:02am. Still better than Abby's poke-you-in-the-throat-every-10-seconds-with-steadily-increasing-press ure technique. >.<

So S gave me a great idea of what to do with the pile of 7kg blue and green plastic tubs from kitty litter that been stacking up in the basement: cut a small hole in the lid and push a dowel through and then cut a larger 1" hole above, pre-drill two screw holes in the bottom for mounting, turn it on it's side and voila - instant birdhouse. S thinks we should cover them in mactac so they're not an "eyesore" and less likely to be pulled down by the city.. so off to the craft store today and then we're going to do some guerilla ecology and put them up in a couple wooded groves around the neighborhood. :)

Happy Caturday all! Best of luck to the USA in the hockey today, and Go Canada Go!

Baromet-purrrr

How do you know,
That I am ill?

Before I do.

Snuggle and Purr,
Keep me planted,

And rested.

Lead me to the kitchen.
Insist on fluids.

Ask for the blanket,
Make me read.

Refreshing my spirit.
Keeping me

In exquisite comfort.

Do you fathom,
The richness of

Your gift
To me?

Covered in your warmth,
Entertaining with your play.

Guarding me as I nap.
Protecting me from

Busy work.

You show me,
Simple is best.

Food, warmth, love.
Family,

Of our own making.

Baromet- purr
Of my well being.

A Simple Gift indeed.

A bit fuzzy but here is Tom and his little Oma Cassie.
I swear that Tom is still growing, does a diet of small birds and gophers cause a mature cat to grow that much bigger than his grandmother?

Been a couple weeks now and I havent been able to bring myself to do this but it's time.

My fiancee and I have been long time lurkers to Caturday, but never posted anything.  I decided to make my Boobies in memory of our cat Anastasia who we had to put down earlier this month.

A one time lab cat, used in a veterenary experiment as a youngster, my fiancee rescued her from a date with the pink juice at one year old, and gave her 14 more years of life.  She survived two bouts with cancer, but the third one did her in, as it spread in her lungs, making it too hard for her to breathe.  She served as a surrogate mom to 6 different kittens, gave blood at the vet clinics my fiancee worked at as needed, and was the sweetest, friendliest, and most full of joy just for being alive cat I have ever met.

Shown here in happier, healthier times, she was loved much, loved much in return and is dearly missed.

Holy shiat that little guy is cute (from the article)!

I'm checking in early for Caturday but will be back here tomorrow.

The funniest thing about Caturday threads is my 7 year old daughter is a pretty good reader so for SOME of the captions, I have to, uh... scroll fast.

My kids love Caturday and they get pissed off if I forget to show them. You guys are all awesome and we love your work!

Oh yeah, here's Princess UniKitty meeting Bronson. They are in lub.

Yeah, that's what happened with my kitty. My BFF was fostering a litter for her shelter and I went to check them out and she picked me. The other kitties didn't even give me a second glance. But Sake just purred all over me and climbed me and followed me everywhere. I guess next time we pick a kitty, we need to just let the hubs do it. Whichever kitty falls in love with him is the one we will bring home. :)

Here's the Dude (he abides). He lost most of that paw and got a hearneated abdomen tangling with a mean dog (not ours) at 10 months. He recovered, but still falls off of things jumping up. He was hiding in an electric organ. He was very impolite and hissed, but dislodged himself when I went to move it out to try to get him. He's such gentle cat, I'm amazed that I got a wholly unmolested hand back when I tried to pull him out. He's fifteen pounds of muscle and fur.

Emma Lou knew when I was in pain.  She'd sit next to me and knead my thigh muscles for 10-15 minutes at a time, then stop for a bit, lay her paw on my leg, probably feeling for vibrations in the muscle, and if she felt it, she'd continue kneading.  She'd keep it up for an hour or more, until she was sure I was relaxed and the pain was gone.  It was her purpose, I think, and she knew what that meant.

My sweet EmmaLou... gone some nine years, but never from my heart.

Manic Depressive Mouse: akimbotoo: Manic Depressive Mouse: Thank you, Timid Goddess, akimbotoo, and Hiro-ACID, for the replies and suggestions. There doesn't really seem to be a pattern, as some days he seems able to eat lots of things and other times he doesn't. I don't think it's an additive in the treats, as he'll also throw up sometimes if we give him cooked chicken or other scraps from our plate. Sometimes there are hairballs, which I don't worry about as much, but often it's just yellowy-clear with whatever bits of undigested food. If we're not fast enough in cleaning it up, the other cat will come and eat the food. Otherwise, he's a healthy and happy guy. He has to take daily thyroid meds, but the puking issues predate the meds.

Late to the party (again) but a couple of thoughts - I think someone else already mentioned it, but problems with their teeth can cause vomiting as they do not chew the dry food, but simply swallow it (the white boy has this issue), wet food helps. Also, IMHO, any cat with thyroid issues tends to vomit a bit more, again I speak from experience with the white one.

I have also noticed that he seems to be allergic to any kind of food coloring (particularly in treats and dry food), so you might want to look for that. Someone else mentioned sensitive stomach food, I have some Science Diet that I used to feed Dragon left over, email me (my user name at gmail.com) if you want to try it, I would be happy to send it to you.

Actually, I just used a standard/basic recipe for soft snickerdoodles that's been in one of my notebooks practically forever, but I browned the butter first and then put the browned butter in the fridge to solidify, then brought it out again until it was at room temperature and followed the recipe from there. So really, I just added a ton of time to it, but it's "hands off" time and it added a nice, warm, almost nutty flavor to them as well.

*rummages around the net*

Ah! Looks 'zactly like the one I used, but with exact measurements and instructions instead of the scrawled mess I have written down in my notebook. Just do the browned butter thingie in there I told you about to get how I did it. Here ya go Soft Snickerdoodles

[lh3.ggpht.com image 500x433]

Thanks, saved it to my favorites, then noticed a recipe at the bottom for soft gingersnaps, so I saved that too, I love ginger flavored stuff.

This is my favorite molasses ginger cookie.
3/4 C vegetable shortening (works better than butter)
1 C sugar
1 egg
1/4 C molasses
2 C flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp cloves
3/4 tsp ginger
Cream shortening and sugar, add egg and molasses, stir well. Add dry ingredients, mix well.
Form into balls the size of a walnut and place 2 inches apart on cookie tins covered with parchment paper. (or grease the cookie tin)
My Mother found this, it was labeled Elevator Lady Cookies. The author of the book got the recipe from a woman who was riding in an elevator with her.

[i61.tinypic.com image 800x600]

We have had him for over 7 years, and he is like having a comedian for a room mate. :D

I used to work with a man that owned a parrot. He'd had it a couple of years without the bird saying a word. the man got married and his wife tried to get the bird to talk, still nothing. When he brought his newborn son home from the hospital the bird took an interest in him. Within weeks the bird began crying like the baby, which I can imagine was really irritating. As his son learned to talk so did the parrot. By the time his son was about 5 the bird and his son were having conversations.
It was almost like the bird was waiting for the right person to come along.

That is so cool! Pirate changed his own name from the one he had for 37 years about 6 months after we got him. Hubby thought it would be fun to teach him "pirate" & "arrrrr" after we saw one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The bird picked up the words almost instantly and within a week or two he started saying things like "yeah, I'm Pirate", "Pirate go poop", "Pirate's in here". I asked him if his name was Sugarfoot or Pirate & he said "why do you want to know?"

He has gone from just repeating words & phrases to actually having conversations with us. He is so very smart and funny. I have been keeping a journal of some of the things he has said over the years and it is really impressive how he can pick up a phrase and then use it appropriately in another context. I regularly tell him that he is the best & one morning he says "you always say I'm the best". I told him that I tell him that because it is the truth, he really is the best. The next day he said "you and Paul are the best".

If you like ginger flavor stuff, try using a regular ol' sugar cookie recipe and then toss in some ginger powder and lime zest. It's a nice change and the ginger and lime is nommy together. It's a classic combo (in my mind). I'm actually pondering making some lime curd with a bit of fresh ginger in there to spread on shortbread as well. I'd just chop up the ginger and add it at the beginning of the recipe for the cooking process, then strain it out when the curd is done. I always strain my curd after I make it because I don't want any tiny bits of cooked egg showing up in there and usually replace the lime zest after straining with a bit of fresh lime zest (I like the green flecks in the curd - looks purty!), but I'm thinking adding more fresh ginger would overpower the lime and then it wouldn't be gingered lime curd anymore. I'm just waiting to gather more cooking energy to try it out.

Manic Depressive Mouse: Thank you, Timid Goddess, akimbotoo, and Hiro-ACID, for the replies and suggestions.

How long has he been taking the thyroid meds? Make sure that your vet checks his blood pressure. Over time the thyroid meds can cause high blood pressure and blindness from that high blood pressure. If the blindness is caught immediately the cat can be given a human blood pressure medication which may reverse the blindness. Unfortunately, my Chloe's vet didn't know about watching the blood pressure until after she had already lost her sight. Chloe has been gone 10 years now, but she was my sweet little orange girl.

And last, but not least, my most recent rescue from last summer, Fluffy Cat. I used to call her Scruffy Cat, because she WAS pretty scruffy when I trapped her, but she'd been living la vida feral for at least 7 or 8 years, near my work. Now that all of the faded brown fur has been shed, she's actually a very pretty black and white, long haired kitty. She's getting more friendly all the time; loves me to pet her, but she still hardly leaves my bedroom/bathroom area. Unless she's exploring the house when nobody is home.

And another kitty from the past, my handsome Harley. He got out one night, and didn't come home. I got a call 6 weeks later in response to one of my posters, but he had been found dead. At least, the caller said the cat looked like him. He was a sweetie, but did not adjust well to the move from MD to FL. :(

Will sit down and read all 550+ comments later, just dropping in before the thread gets TOO long. :P

First, in case anyone knows what it means, I finally got my CCNA certification on Monday. It wasn't as hard as I had expected it would be, but three solid days of studying helped a bit. It feels good that an entire year of classwork (and three days of pre-exam studying) paid off. And now to be properly employed! :)

Second, hey, Real Women Drink Akvavit, you're the local nail polish guru. How do you get it do dry faster? I love doing my nails, but I use my hands a lot, so sitting on my ass waiting for hours for it to dry (including base and top coats) takes too damn long, and I end up chipping it a few hours later anyway. Any suggestions? :(

Thirdly, the boys are still cuddly and a pain in my ass. Have a pic of them being adorable:

Back finishing LAST week's thread before I can start on this one. And my nails, I wanna do a fun color since spring is here.

Manic Depressive Mouse: I have a question about pukey kitties. Mine has a tendency to throw up if he eats things too quickly, though he's usually ok with his standard kibble. Sometimes, it seems he can handle other foods, sometimes he can't. Any ideas on how I can still give him treats and the occasional scrap without having to wash the floors after him? It's often a very small amount that he can handle - for example 2 cat treats are ok, but if he has 3, then he's sick. Also, he often throws up several times and in different places. Do other cats do that? Why?!?!
Thanks!

Not sure how much of this has been said, but, if any of this can help, I'll ramble a bit about possibilities.  Your milege may vary and you know him best.

Vet visits are always a good start.  Cats can develop physical, mental and emotional problems.  I know one of my Mom's cats is prone to anxiety when she is away for a while.  A vet visit can at least (probably) rule out physical problems.

Try to find a pattern.  Clear liquid, food, hairball, grass/other plant material?  Always when x is present in the treat but not when it is absent?  When he is excited about some treat but not when he is thinking about how he is eating?  Only on days when the trash truck goes by or a neighbor visits?  Last would probably be stress about some change to his routine that you might not even think about.

and his momma, Pandora...
an old pic, she's a ton more okay with her current humans than she was when she got here, [background for those that don't know]  Panda was found outside with 5 kittens, after the shelters week quarantine, we got to foster the lot... She was VERY skittish when she got here, we gave her a "safe room" that was just her and her kittens, a litter box and food and water bowls.  We would go in to give food and water and clean the litter, and she'd hide, at first for at least 10 mins after we closed the door.  She was a hard case.  She was, if she was returned, going to be a CNR feral.  Right from the get go we thought she had been a house cat that got out and stayed out for what ever reason...
She may never be a cuddle cat, but she sure loves a skritch. More and more every day...

I just thought it would be nice for us to post pics of our own pets. We get lots of new people here every week that post pics of their "kids", but for the most part lots of us post funny captions and gifs and stuff. I thought it would be cool if some of the newbies could somehow associate us with our "kids".

I know that when I was still a lurker, I really enjoyed seeing pictures of the pets that own all of you guize! That is one way that I felt connected with you all. I knew Suzy, and Dragon and Gremmie, and lots more of you through your pets. Not to forget Buddy, and Cracker Jack, Biscuit and Cooper, and Faust. Think it's another lurker type weekend... it's been rather rough financially - they guy had to take another job in addition to trying to run the shop to make ends meet.  I've been feeling completely useless because I can't work much, and then the topper yesterday was my timesheet got lost so I didn't get paid.  (They did find it, I'll get paid NEXT time... gah... They were very apologetic and even tearful, so I'm not as pissed off... just annoyed).  Cassie and Lars are (thankfully) pretty much unaware of the financial issues, since they still get food, treats, toys and litter :)  Both of them actually just figured out I had a bag of toys on the floor and have been taking turns going over to pull out a new toy a couple times a day.  I love my furry babies!  Supposed to get snow up here (gasp! Snow? in Montana?!  That's worth calling "snowmageddin"... really?  REALLY???)  12-18" is NOT uncommon out here, but we've got to be dramatic, I guess.  I just hope I can get into town on Monday to turn in my new timesheet and go to my meeting and eye appointment.  Ok, I'm done whining...

Lots of **HUGS** to those with losses and pending losses.  I waited too long and didn't take notes, so I can't remember people individually :(

My Abby was an ex-feral and has vomiting issues too. What works for her, and cuts down her throwing up to only a few times a week is feeding her canned food by her self. I also mush it down flat with a fork in her bowl so she has to work longer to eat. It is a no grain cat food and the brand is Go. I also only give them all no grain treats of dehydrated chicken or turkey. The boys are fed a no grain dry food from Fromm. They especially like the Duck a la Veg and the Game Bird. Good luck & keep us posted.

I used to have a long haired maine coon type cat who would hoark if she ate too fast, especially kibble. She must have gone hungry as a kit. We would add water to the kiblle to slow down her eating, or mix gooshies with kibble. Sometimes petting to interrupt the nom time too...its an anxiety thing. Also she had a really sensitive stomache. So you may need to change your food..

Frozboz: After trying (officially) for 2+ years, my wife and I finally adopted a bouncing baby boy yesterday.  We've had temporary custody of him since his birth about 2 weeks ago, and are a few states away from home while the paperwork clears.  Anyway, we've seen 3 different pediatricians and all of them ask if we have cats at home.  We do.  Two, Rojo and Winter, ages 7 and 8.  They're generally well-behaved and needless to say are a part of our family.  The doctors all respond with "watch the cats around him".

My question is, how concerned should we be?  Any tips on how to introduce/integrate the new family member, so that everyone gets along?

I had seven cats before my oldest was born, and my oldest cat had the most trouble getting along, mostly out of jealousy. Having the entire house rearranged for the new arrival was kind of a shock, too, especially not being allowed in the crib. She'd occasionally take swipes or nip at the head, once breaking the skin. So there's a possible issue there.

The whole "suck the air out" thing is a myth and probably based on a kitty's intense interest in anything that's warm, wiggles, and smells like milk. A seven to ten pound cat on a baby about the same weight can also be a concern, but I never had that happen.

Your sleep is going to be disrupted, so their routines will be thrown off as well. They will get used to it, depending on their age and adaptability. It took about three years before oldest cat decided that oldest kid was not going to displace her in my affections, and she had taken to cuddling up next to the kid on my bed in the months before she died.

/ok, gotta go cry now

1st: Major congrats on your son. Thank you for loving so much as to adopt. You and your spouse are teh AWESOME.
2nd: don't worry too much about the cats. My kids came home to cats and I put the baby on the floor and let the cat(s) just sniff and explore. Soon, they would wind up curled up sleeping with the warm, hairless "kitten" and all was good. Some cats even go so far as to guard their new addition and alert the hoomin if the "kitten" needs attention.
Use your common sense...you'll be fine.
We all offer our congrats and best wishes for your new family.

Personally, I don't think you have too much to worry about. All pets have different personalities, so I would just say use common sense and observe how the cats react with your new one. Make sure that they know he is not a threat, and I'm sure everything will be fine. They will be curious for a while until they get used to him. And congrats!!!!! :D

The Ice Queen: lilyspad: The Ice Queen: So the Ice Queen needs some cheering up.

Found out 2 relatives have cancer. One was an open/close type surgery (nothing they could do so they closed him back off) and the other doesn't want to do treatment because of her age (in her 80s and in poor health already). Add in my other uncle who was also just diagnosed and I currently have 3 relatives who will be or are already on hospice.

Yeah.

I'm so sorry...that really sucks!! You need to hug some kittens. Now. ((HUGS))

No hugs but Davinci farted on me.........
I guess its the thought that count
Gah kittens have nasty farts

first, re all the relatives, you should ask each of them about one fun thing they want to do, and do it with them while they can.

second, not just kittens, (although I suppose he still is, although he's about full sized)  My Jack gets the high end dry food and very rare canned and the odd tuna or salmon water, and hoe lee shiat when he drops one it is NASTY  ...his mom, same diet... nodda

sno man: tigerose: Meh, got redlit. Oh well...at least I tried?

Don't get too discouraged... It took me dozens of tries to get my first green...I've still never had a Caturday thread green, and that's on my wish list.  I've had a green in every tab but video and business, which are also goals, but a Caturday green would be really special.  (hope you appreciate how special they are Sherpa!)

Hell, I have never managed to get a green other than a Caturday thread, no matter how hard I tried - so I just stick to what I know  :o)  And yes, I do appreciate them...

tigerose: sherpa18! So good to see you. I had a worry. It haz been nuts in casa tigerose...son spilled water on teh laptop keyboard. It is munged. Computer is ok, but the top row of keys are non functional. Aaaaarg!

I had a snow day to dig out the driveway. 7 inches. Zomg! Tired of it. And I haz the cold frm Hades..

Eli says Merooow!

You rang ??   If it was just water, and you unplugged the keyboard quickly, I would place it on something warm, or prop it over a heat vent, keyboard side toward the vent, and leave it for a couple of days.. once it dries out, try it out.. if it is still messed up, trash it.. removing the source of power is the most important stage.. if you spill something other than water, flush it well with very warm water several times, set it on end to drain, and then place it over a heat vent.. seems to work for me... used to work for a restaurant chain.. employees (mostly managers) would spill soda on calculator keyboards.. they were instructed to remove batteries immediately and bring the calculator to the office with their paperwork.... the business owner sent the bulletin on that after I resurrected about 30 of them... I built a 'drying station' in my shop, had a bench just for that sort of thing.. saved bunches of bucks...

Good to see you too! (or anybody, I thought I killed the thread)... Meanwhile, put uncooked rice in pan, place open laptop keyboard upside down on rice bed, wait 12 -24 hours, then use canned air or blow dryer (on cool) to dry. Or just wait for OlderGuy to check in and offer to fix it for you :o) He rocks like that.

Via Infinito: I think we are going to look for an adult male cat next time.

We have had Commander Meow Meow for about six weeks now. He is quite possibly the best cat in the world. He's super friendly to guests, he's very snugly, he never bites and only scratches when you rub his belleh- and even then he lets you know that he's moved on to "attack hand" mode. I've been told- "This is the second cat I've ever liked" and "wow- my cat would never come to the door to meet guests".

I feel that it's time. He needs to be lol'd.

Happy Caturday everyone. I actually lost track of time and just checked Fark now. I promised my 14 year old niece a hat but illness and other things (like the yarn going on backorder) got in the way, but I finally got going on it today while binge watching the new season of "House of Cards". Here it is along with a scarf I quickly added in to use up the yarn. I don't have much use for neon green!

i283.photobucket.com
Tried to get one of the kitties to at least model the scarf but neither would have anything to do with it.
