Good morning all.  Thankfully have the weekend off, and finally getting over this flesh-eating death disease ebola that seems to have infected me since last weekend.  Thought that since the kids weren't here anymore, I'd get lucky and cut back on sickness.  Totally wrong on that one.  Anyway, Starbuck continues to be a complete maniac.  She goes in to get fixed next week thankfully.  This constant screeching throughout the house is driving me insane right now.  Second date lined up for this weekend with someone new.  Last one and I decided on friends only, and we're fine with that.  So it's the Bonefish Grill tomorrow, and hopefully a good time.  At the least, I'll have a great meal.  Will try and get some pics of Starbuck up today, as well as Adama (Dexter) if I can get him to do anything other than be curled up on the couch.

Frozboz: After trying (officially) for 2+ years, my wife and I finally adopted a bouncing baby boy yesterday.  We've had temporary custody of him since his birth about 2 weeks ago, and are a few states away from home while the paperwork clears.  Anyway, we've seen 3 different pediatricians and all of them ask if we have cats at home.  We do.  Two, Rojo and Winter, ages 7 and 8.  They're generally well-behaved and needless to say are a part of our family.  The doctors all respond with "watch the cats around him".

My question is, how concerned should we be?  Any tips on how to introduce/integrate the new family member, so that everyone gets along?

Sorry, I don't have any advice. But CONGRATULATIONS!

Sad news today.   My guinea pig, Fluff (we just never renamed her when we adopted her), just died an hour ago.  She was always very small, but over the past week, she lost tons of weight (it was painful to pet or hold her because she was all bones) despite constant eating and had trouble keeping her eyes open.  But in spite of that, her personality had no change whatsoever.  She was still her curious, energetic, and very hungry self.

The vet said that she most likely had hyperthyroidism, and we had to go to a specialist in Quakertown to get bloodwork and an accurate diagnosis.  We hadn't made the appointment yet (we were debating whether or not the tests would do more harm than good in her condition - guinea pigs don't take these things well), but I guess it doesn't matter now.

At least when I saw her earlier this morning, she was still herself.  She wasn't suffering in any way.  I guess her body just gave out.  It's really sad - it all happened so quickly, and she was only three years old.  But I've had guinea pigs for over 20 years.  It happens.  I'm just glad she went quickly because guinea pigs usually don't die gracefully.

RIP, Fluff.  I'm sure you're over the Rainbow Bridge and buried in a box of Cheerios.  She went crazy for Cheerios and would literally crawl into the box when she decided that the couple pieces we were giving her weren't enough.  :)

1st: Major congrats on your son. Thank you for loving so much as to adopt. You and your spouse are teh AWESOME.
2nd: don't worry too much about the cats. My kids came home to cats and I put the baby on the floor and let the cat(s) just sniff and explore. Soon, they would wind up curled up sleeping with the warm, hairless "kitten" and all was good. Some cats even go so far as to guard their new addition and alert the hoomin if the "kitten" needs attention.
Use your common sense...you'll be fine.
We all offer our congrats and best wishes for your new family.

Poor little Suzy. She is now scared to go outside, Murder Kitty is outside. When we ask her if she wants to go for walkies she gets all happy, we get her harness on and all hooked up, she rushes to the door, we open the door, she does more of the happy dance. Then we open the screen door. She gets that scrunched up face, and slowly pokes her head around the screen door and peers around to see if Murder Kitty is out there.

We have been trying to get it on video but no luck yet.

Having no experience with introducing babies and pets, I would suggest common sense while introducing the cats to the baby. Did the drs. say anything in particular that you should be concerned about? Biting, scratching, sitting on the baby or my Grandmother's favorite "The cat will suck the breathe right out of the baby" since Grandma was born in 1884 that was probably considered medical fact when she wass growing up.

O hai everyone!!!! I don't have time to do much Caturday-ing anymore, apart from lurking and reading a page or several here and there, but it helps fill the hole in my heart! Back to the constant studying grind, hubby and kittehs 3,000 miles away in sunny California. Got these guys for study buddies, though, so it's not all bad! Also the hubby just got the envelope stuffed with happy thoughts that I sent him (I had a bunch of paper scraps, seemed appropriate), and it clearly had the desired effect because he was grinning ear to ear when we video chatted last night.

Regarding the article, Mercury is so adorable, and he reminds me of our Wembley as a kitten. The T-rex impression slew me. :D

Study buddies...they probably want me to get back to genetics, but I'll try to come back and visit later!

catmandu: Via Infinito: I think we are going to look for an adult male cat next time.

Like what_now said: they tend to pick you out, but on the other hand it is often what you were hoping for anyway. After Mandu went over the bridge, I went to the shelter to check out what kitties were there. I only said I was looking for an older kitten or young adult that liked to snuggle but secretly I was also hoping for a black male. When the shelter volunteer suggested I meet Lenny I agreed, and within the first minute of having him in my arms I was in love. He was 6 months and a snuggler. It turns out he was also a black male. (BTW, he told me his name was really Hector)

Adama and Starbuck are currently sleeping, so here's a pic of my birthday cake from two weeks ago that my friend from work got me.  Probably one of the best B-day cakes I've ever received.  Might not have been baked, but the originality of it was pretty awesome.  Krispy Kremes and donut minis.  Can't get any better than that.

Mercury is too adorable! The kitten pictures are so cute, and when you check out the Facebook, there are lots of grown up pics of Mercury.

The vet was saying last time that the two monsters were gaining weight (really, 6lbs and 8lbs?). I was switching food anyway due to easier access at a closer store, and ended up getting Nature's Balance Reduced Calorie food. Only... Ivan has gain at least two pounds on it. I can feel it in his belly (he's so heavy now!) and even when I weighed him. He's at least 10lbs if not more now. So now I'm wondering if I should put them back on a regular food. Its hard to limit them access because they'll throw a fit (they've always free fed and never been overweight), and throwing a fit won't work since I sleep at night and The Man sleeps during the day.

Little tubby jerk from last summer (when he had his bikini body):
img.photobucket.com

But at least he hangs out with me in my lap on Caturdays. It's a tradition. Now I'm just waiting for food to digest before going running. 10 miles, almost to that half marathon!

Thanks lilyspad.  Yeah, she's one of the three little black kitties that we rescued from our woodpile out back, they're the most sweetest little siblings.  We still have their momma outside (we trapped and fixed her after these babies) we feed her and water her outside, but she's way too feral to bring in.  (not too mention these three babies makes 8 cats in the house)  all fixed and shotted, and all happy kids!!!   B-)
