Fourteen people took part in the study who were 'switches' who enjoyed both receiving and giving pain

Tiny sample size + choosing people already predisposed to such activity = "Research" FAIL.

Oh, subspace.

They're talking about subspace.

Yes, Daily Fail. Endorphins, a hightened emotional and sexual sensitivity, and adrenaline can lead to an altered state.

And it's freakin' awesome.

The results found that people playing the pain-receiving role performed badly in a part of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, Ambler said.

This is a meaningless sentence. Your brain, or even regions of it, can't perform badly. Either it is hyperactive (too active relative to how most people's brains respond) or hypoactive (less active relative to how most people's brains respond) and either can be "good" or "bad" depending on a lot of factors. Also, in the article, I could not find where the researchers actually did neuroimaging at all; it just mentions they were administered the Stroop. I have some friends who went to SPSP, but are typically squicked out a little at my interest in BDSM so likely would not have stopped at that poster to get more details. I'm probably going to have to contact the lead author to find out more, but still, this is an patently absurd way to write up a summary of a research project.

Not at all. Depending on the predicted effect sizes, a sample of 14 can be sufficient. I know, for example, based on some colleagues' work that some basic kinds of mental rotation research questions, you can replicate the pattern of results with that few participants that you see in larger samples of hundreds. Some findings are just that robust that it is unusual to *not* see the same pattern of results. Also, this could likely also be an exploratory study (or part of a larger study that they did secondary analyses on), in which case the researchers were trying to get a lay of the land to see if it's even worth pursuing for more rigorous follow-up research. This was, after all, a poster at a conference, which is quite often that kind of research. The very edge and frontier of new research avenues that graduate students and professors are just starting out.

Scientific research possibly proving the existence of subspace That's seriously awesome. (Subspace, and the research that is both.) gives a whole new meaning to medical play. :)

Well, that's hardly surprising, she said, after reading the longer, linked article. Anyone who knows anything about pain rituals knows that they've long been used so that the participants could achieve a transcendant state, a different sort of high. Modern piercing/hanging rituals are just a modern gloss on the Sioux Sun Dance and Philippine mortification rituals, after all. Assuming they're done right.

Sadist likes to hurt people, masochists likes to be hurt.  Ergo hurting the masochist is what the masochist wants.  To really hurt the masochist the sadists only option is to do nothing and not give the masochist the pain they desire.

Not bad, but I prefer the more succinct "What did the sadist say to the masochist?" version, personally.

I know nothing of the science of this, but I have hooked up with a girl like this for the last 3 years. Cannot really call it a relationship as we just get together before or after work, maybe 2-4 times a month. We have little communication, even when we are together. She loves ass spanking, clit clamps, nipple torture, etc. Very weird getting used to that, such as how hard to spank. At first I was timid and did not want to hurt, but that was corrected quickly. Very intense sex I have to say. I would actually like to know her better, take her to dinner, or out shopping kind of thing, but she says that would ruin it. Very strange deal.

However, he does have a point about predisposition. Why  do some people get involved in S&M\BDSM? The urge usually manifests naturally as part of sexuality--does that indicate that there's some complex pattern of sexual traits interacting here that may not apply to the general population? The trust and sensation interactions do certainly create altered states of conciousness, but that doesn't make it healthy for someone who's  not into it. Kind of the opposite, actually--if you're not into it, it's probably terrifying and farks you up.

Interesting - I'm not sure it's useful. You can't just flip a switch and get "into" something you're not into just because it might be beneficial to you in some way.

All I know is that for me being totally owned and controlled (by my wife--someone I trust) and subjected to different kinds of pain while she laughs at my reactions gets my heart rate going and makes me dumb as a bag of rocks leading up to and after the moment and it is fantastic.

Figging....that's the way to go these days. With three kids it's difficult for the wife and I to play, but we've found a carefully carved piece of ginger root and my voice can have her floating in no time. Whipping, spanking, flogging etc...while fun, are not necessary.

Indeed. Like this guy said:

Sid_the_sadist: Whipping, spanking, flogging etc...while fun, are not necessary.

It's heavily psychological. Thank you for showing me about 'figging' by the way. We too have children and so you have to go more covert sometimes. I enjoy the under-the-clothes public stuff like genital bondage. While out and about, if you can sneak in small increments of private time here and there it can be super sexy. Only she really knows what's going on down there and she'll check it periodically if given the chance.  That's something else you can do when you've got little cockblockers. Also remote control butt plugs. Any other ideas? that figging thing sounds crazy. I don't really research all this available stuff we just do what we like and look up each new thing we get into.

2014-02-21 11:38:18 AM
