No Buckaroo Banzai?
No Blade Runner?
No Ghostbusters?

Don't get me wrong, Spaceballs is a good movie and all, but those three beat it hands down.

Gimme UHF over Spaceballs any day.

FTFA: "Big" is a 1988 movie about a kid getting his wish to be an adult before his time. Josh wanted to be an adult with all of the perks that come along with it. He wanted girls, money and cars and he got exactly what he wanted after making a wish at the Zoltar Speaks game at the fairgrounds

Um, no, Josh wanted to be "big".  He got way more than he wanted.

I've seen all ten of these "Greatest Movies From The 80s You Can't Do Without," and amazingly enough I will be OK without them.  Here are ten movies from the 80's that I like better than their ten:

Raging Bull
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Blue Velvet
Brazil
The Right Stuff
Hannah and Her Sisters
Down By Law
This is Spinal Tap
Do The Right Thing
Ran

They don't fill any kitschy nostalgic void, so they never make kitschy nostalgic lists.  I like them all better, and frankly I think all of them are better.  And you know what?  I'm right because I said so.  Make your own list and make the same declaration.

Holy crap.  You only need to see the trailer to know that their description is wrong.  Are we getting trolled?

I never got the appeal of The Breakfast Club. If this guy has such a hard on for John Hughes he should have mentioned Vacation.

No Raiders of the Lost Ark?

No ET?

This list is a failure.

Fast Times for christ's sake.

What is the point of this?

"This is my list and moderately inaccurate discriptions of movies that come up when I google '80s movies.' Thank you for clicking my slide show."

Rogers Ebert felt the movie was about ten years too late.

The rest of the list was vapid john huge rich white kid fantasy jerkoffs.

Back to the Future is the only good thing on that list...

Back in the '80s, slideshows involved actual physical slides.  Which were somehow only equally annoying to modern ones.

Agreed. I can remember that movie making me laugh so hard I thought I was going to pass out when I watched it back in college. Later viewings not so much.

I have never and probably will never understand the appeal of a movie vehicle designed around letting an overrated midget in purple ham up in front of the camera with absolutely no acting talent present.

Or did we get old. Cheech and Chong isn't funny anymore. Or maybe it's the scumbag dealer across the way with customers banging on his door at all hours.

The only two that I saw were Spaceballs and Back to the Future and I saw them in the 90's

No Terminators?  Conan?

As long as we are adding movies to the list...
oi57.tinypic.com

Come on, man.  This movie epitomizes the 80s.  It's an underdog story against a bunch of rich jocks with a training montage where the underdog gets the girl and gets the begrudging respect of his former tormentors.  It's basically the entire 80s wrapped up into one film.

2014-02-20 06:43:28 PM
Red Dawn
Krull
Gremlins
Ghostbusters
Conan
Christine
Commando
Rambo
Transformers
Ice Pirates
The Last Starfighter
Bloodsport

to name a few

wildcardjack: Or did we get old.

Nah, there are plenty of goofy movies I saw as a kid that I still like. Airplane! I saw at 5 and is still hilarious.

Anyway, the 80s was a long decade (10 years if my calculations are correct) and such a list would be too big but Back to the Future's the only one they got right (admittedly I never saw The Princess Bride but I feel I have since it's been quoted so much).

Princess Bride was in the $5 rack at Target so I snapped it up. It's still in the shrink wrap somewhere around here.

Nobody has listed The Empire Strikes Back yet, so I throw that one into the pot.

I agree that Raiders of the Lost Ark and Ghostbusters beats most of those movies in the TFA hands down.
Except for Back to the Future and Princess Bride.

These have all been mentioned, but Ghostbusters, Raiders, and Karate Kid are nowhere to be found.  I'd throw Short Circuit in there, too, at least for the list that they're going for.  The Outsiders was a crappy movie, but with a cast including Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, and Tom Cruise, it screams '80's movie.

Speaking of Tom Cruise, no Rain Man?  No Risky Business?  Top Gun?

But we do have...Pretty In Pink?  The Psychedelic Furs are the only thing worth a sh*t about that movie.

Monster Squad

Substitute Lucas for Mask.

Flight of the Navigator

Wait, E.T. wasn't on the list?

I see Ghostbusters and The Empire Strikes back have been mentioned.
I need say nothing further.

Better Off Dead.

2014-02-20 08:13:02 PM
80s movies were cheesy but usually entertaining, and not afraid to get an R rating. Case in point: RoboCop 1987 vs. RoboCop 2014. I'm not saying the 80s movies were better than movies now. There are so many great films out now. But I remember the 80s films as more fun.

No it does not. I watched it late last year, not even a chuckle.

I counted 3 good movies in that list, maybe two. I think i have to watch Big this weekend to find out.

I think what the list was going for was more of an 80's feel.
You wouldn't have Raiders on there because it doesn't take place in the 80's.
List is ok. Never saw Dirty Dancing.
I'd add Goonies for sure since the farking music video has more 80's in it than you can cram into a cave.
Also, Weird Science.

2014-02-20 09:58:35 PM
List fails because it's missing
Goonies
Better Off Dead
16 Candles

And does not need Dirty Dancing and Big, while those are 80's films, they didn't appeal to the same crowd that the others did.

From their Spaceballs description...

This movie is a classic that parodies the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek and Police Academy, to name a few. It became a comedy before some of us even knew why and it still holds up today.

How do you "parody" Police Academy, and where in this movie is there a Police Academy parody? Are they only saying this because it has Michael Winslow in it? Jesus, one movie in, and they're morons...

spman: Gimme UHF over Spaceballs any day.

UHF is one of those cult movies that you need to come to under your own power and it will mean SO much more from it.

You just know there's going to be that one weird kid that stumbles upon it, watches it out of boredom and just indoctrinates all his friends and that's how the cult starts.

It is an awesome movie.  But it just has that flair and weirdness about it that has to be organically grown.

One does not simply make a top ten 80's movies list.
