FTFA: The fire apparently broke out in a warehouse that stored materials for crop dusting.

That's when you get the fark out, and drive into the wind until you're at least a few miles into it.

But what about the goggles? Do they do anything?

for crop dusting.

I've cleared out rooms before but never an entire city.  Damn, what was for lunch?

I'll probably be corrected by Fark Chemists, but I'm pretty sure that Sulfuric acid or whatever it is doesn't actually react with water. They probably just don't want to use water on the fire because it will spread flammable liquids.

Let me guess. The company responsible for properly storing the acid is called America Fark Yeah Crying Bald Eagle Enterprises.

Everyone in town roll for saving throw on Dex for half damage.

Concentrated sulfuric acid produces an extreme exothermic reaction with water, and can produce explosive effects. You don't fight fires involving sulfuric acid, you let them burn out and keep them from spreading.

Officials thus far have "not been able to determine the severity or toxicity of anything.

Are you farking kidding me?!?

Let's start with this: http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/3/erg-gmu/erg/guidepage.aspx/guid e 137/id988/mnid1059 - The Hazmat response guide for Sulfuric Acid.

Not a chemist but I took the class in high school.  You never add water to acid because it can bubble and spit at you.  The "Rootbeer Rule" was what my teacher called it.  A&W-- acid to water, never the other way around.

Or, you could have read the following paragraph where the fire dept guy describes the same thing.

"It's going to bubble and spit and do all kinds of things." Also, he said, any water that mixed with the acid would have to be contained because it would be tainted with the chemical and could poison groundwater or nearby streams.

That just seems weird to me because water has a neutral ph. I thought Acids react with metals and bases.

Wouldn't dusting crops with Sulfuric Acid be bad?

Sulfuric Acid has a huge affinity for good old H2O - in fact it's dehydrating qualities are one of the reasons it's used in industry so much, and one of the reasons it's one of the worst concentrated acids to get burned by (HF being THE worst). Since the density of water is less, the water will concentrate on the top of the solution, which causes the bubbling and spitting of the acid as the reaction occurs.

There you go. I've been schooled on Fark today.

Please don't think that. I'm sure that something I said was oversimplistic or wrong. My grasp of chemistry is High School Chem II at best.

Late to the party, as usual. You'll just have to introduce me by having the others rescue me from the NPC bad guys I guess...

How do I know you never took Chemistry? "Do what you oughter. Add acid to water."

I don't know that it's relevant but generally speaking, water is not neutral. Pure distilled water, yes, but the that we use in our taps and firehoses has all kinds of random stuff in it in various concentrations.

Forced to evacuate? I guess you could say everyone in town is taking an acid trip.

Oh no, not more white noise about an airborne toxic event.

I'd evacuate too if I heard Arcade Fire was coming to town.

You fight fire with fire and you fight acid with acid.
So we need xenomorphs with flamethrowers.
