QFTA:

"People are well within their rights to demonstrate anywhere in the world about anything they want to, but what we would ask is that the Games themselves are not used as a platform for demonstration," said Adams, who also added that the Games "are a great show of how different people from different backgrounds can live together in harmony and we want to try to preserve that."

In other words, shut up, droop the flag and shoot your right arm towards the box.

Well people certainly CAN and should demonstrate anywhere in the world. Expect to get beaten in 99% of it though. Maybe if you are in a large enough group like Egypt some of you won't die and changes might happen.

Is that Uniform the "cossack" is wearing something official or something they whipped (pardon the pun) up themselves to play dress-up?  If so the parallels between the Cossacks and Hitler's SA (brown shirts) are getting a bit distrubing

He's obviously well trained though. He's aiming right for the abdomen. No broken bones, no visible bruising but plenty of internal damage.

The Soviets used to grab Solidarity protesters by each arm and as they walked them away from the protest, the cops would beat on the protestor's knees with wooden clubs. Both of them. To permanently cripple both knees.

You have to be carefully taught.

I'd also note that that is not a standard issue "bullwhip" but an actual "knout" which is a) a much more brutal implement (see that ring attaching the snake like part  of the whip to the rod sticking obout a fott above the handle? it creates incredible torque)  Not only that but it's clearly of recent manufacture and that's not an item that easy to find (S&M shops don't carry anything like that since  those things can easily break bones)

It looked less like a protest to me and more like a music video shoot in front of the Olympics logo. It still doesn't make whipping them right, but they were going to profit off of this so it wasn't all for a protest IMO.

Fark the whole Olympics, seriously. I just hate seeing everyone buying into the stupid racket. The IOC makes millions, the local contractors make millions, the local politicians score at least some popularity points, if not tonnes of kickbacks depending on the corruption. All the countries get an overhyped pissing contest while the citizens get their brief breads and circuses.

And who gets screwed over? The taxpayers who are left with infrastructure that's overbudget and half the time left to rot, the local citizens who get martial law imposed while being chucked out of their homes and the athletes who go back to their food/retail jobs with few if any marketable skills, discounting the lucky few who score some endorsements.

2014-02-20 07:21:56 PM
The IOC is an embarrassing shell of what they could have been.

Imagine if it were actually an organization that used sports competition to promote international understanding and human well-being! What a novelty! How different the Games would be, in tone and in effects.

Instead, they seem to be on a roll of choosing some of the worst places, attitudes, and tactics they can, or encouraging civilized local governments to mistreat their own citizenry.

Hey CJHardin, you might want to learn a little bit more about Pussy Riot.  Here is a quote from an open letter they published on February 6 2014:

"We belong to leftist anti-capitalist ideology - we charge no fees for viewing our art-work, all our videos are distributed freely on the web, the spectators to our performances are always spontaneous passers by, and we never sell tickets to our "shows". "

So no, they are not going to "profit" off this, unless you mean purely in the sense of furthering their causes.  Certainly not in a fiscal sense.

Sorry, kind of got random.  1) This thread is about the Cossacks whipping that band in Russia. 2) The only place I've heard of Cossacks before was the Bessarovian Cossacks on 1960s Batman. 3) One of the other commenters posted about a minor character from that old Batman (Adam West era) series. 4) I found that quote from the character he referred to (King Tut).  Only funny if you grew up watching reruns of old school Batman I think (maybe not even then, but I was entertained anyway).

ReverendJynxed: Cossack vs. Gurkha, who would win?

When you can show me an example of a single Cossack armed only with a knife defending a train from an attack by bandits with automatic weapons like this Ghurka did, then we can begin to have that discussion right now they just seem to be thugs that beat unarmed women.
