Though the article doesn't say, I'm thinking it was probably one of those armor truck guards that you see carrying bags of money in and out of grocery stores all the time.  Though it is possible that the neighborhood this happened at is just so crappy, that the grocery store needs to hire a guy to stand around carrying a gun.
