phlegmmo: One UFO expert is convinced NASA photos show a city on the red-hot planet's surface.

I challenge that evaluation.

But you don't understand, he's an EXPERT.  Just because his field of expertise is imaginary, doesn't mean he's wrong...  Oh, wait it does.

Well, no doubt, it's a Crazy Little Thing.  Probably formed Under Pressure or A Kind of Magic. Part of a larger formation, it Wanted to Break Free.  It Will Rock You.

Meanwhile...on Mars. Star Trek symbols all over the planet? OK, now the Martians are just messing with us.

broberds: Turns out Mercury isn't tidally locked; it rotates three times for every two revolutions around the sun. So no sweet spot, temperature-wise, at a permanent terminator line.
On the other hand, its tiny axial tilt does promise the possibility of reasonable conditions at the poles. Maybe.
At any rate it's better than Venus.

Venus was Earth temp a few million years back. And don't forget the tops of the clouds are like 50F. I would look for Bespin.

Monkeyhouse Zendo: RobSeace: Is there a hidden schooner or something?

I thought it was a sailboat.

You might be right about a boat on the right side, but the one on the left is a dinghy.

Monkeyhouse Zendo: dittybopper: Actually, you could use that:  Put a settlement on the dark side of the terminator, and run pipes with some kind of working fluid to collectors on the sunlit side.  Use the temperature differential to heat and power the settlement.

Absolutely. But then you'd have to ask yourself why anyone would want to live on a barren rock, in perpetual darkness, with no atmosphere, and instant flaming death just over the horizon.

People live in the mideast, don't they?

I stared and stared, and can't see a goddamned thing in any of the presented images, aside from normal surface features like craters... The red circles are no help at all! Is this like one of those MagicEye things, where you have to squint and look at it just right? Is there a hidden schooner or something?
