The threats all appear to have been exclusively of the internet variety, and threats from internet tough guys are the equivalent of brief eye contact in the actual world.

"You don't have to look or be a certain way to be beautiful.

True. Obviously.

"I may not have been born a girl, but I am no less female than the rest of the girls."

False. S/he may be no less feminine, FWIW I've known several straight men who were more feminine than a lot of straight women, but by definition she is and always will be less female. Regardless of what you look like, feel & act like and who you're attracted to, you're female if you're born XX. Period. Those who are completely androgen insensitive are very very close--sometimes even they don't know till a doctor tells them after examination or testing, and it's hard to imagine seeing them as guys even if they insist on it--but still by definition they're males with a weird "birth defect," not females. A fact's a fact.

This is not to hate on "T-words"--I've known several and been attracted to a few--only to insist on a scientific definition. You know: the Earth revolves around the Sun, and (at least among mammals) a female is one who is born XX.

And as transgenders go my personal aesthetic/sexual opinion is that it's better when it doesn't go too far: I prefer transgenders without fake tits and with cocks/balls that work. "Crossdressing," lasering off superfluous facial hair and so on are fine, but the best part about it is feminine beauty I can suck off. (And I don't mean "be[ing] made to suck cock" either: try to make me when I don't want to and you'll get it bitten off whether you like it or not.) Sex and gender are different things, and the "inside" doesn't have to match the "outside." AFAIC it's often better when it doesn't.

This does NOT mean I'd try to stop anybody from getting completely "reassigned," only that once the process goes beyond a certain point the attraction dies. My wild ass guess is that's why Chastity Bono's lesbian lover broke up with Chaz: if she'd wanted a transman she'd have hooked up with one to begin with. And I, a life-long militant BiQueer, simply can't imagine having sex with Chaz Bono either.

But hey, if some people want to consider my insistence on proper scientific labeling and my personal preference for gender-benders with working cocks as tantamount to declaring that "All T-words must die!!!!" then that's their problem.

As for the lovely in the article, as long as my stipulation is satisfied I'd have no objection to receiving Miss Coventry as a birthday present. As long as Jordan's over 18 by then: the Age of Consent is 16 in KY but most Americans are very easily confused and prone to violence when they get that way.

Completely.

Even is she was born a chick, it's still a beauty contest. By its definition, you have to look a certain way to win. Ugos don't win those things specifically because they don't/can't conform to a standard of beauty. Let me know when they start having "great personality pageants".

As an ugo, I can confirm this finding.

Rogers: Why are you always on about women, Stan?
Stan: I want to be one.
Reg: What?
Stan: I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to

Reg: What?
Loretta: It's my right as a man.

Loretta: I want to have babies.
Reg: You want to have babies?!
Loretta: It's every man's right to have babies if he wants

Reg: But...you can't have babies!
Loretta: Don't you opress me!
Reg: I'm not opressing you, Stan. You haven't got a womb.
Where is the foetus going to gestate? You're going to keep

Loretta: Sniff.
Judith: Here, I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he

Rogers: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for

diaphoresis: I never understood the people who use ignore lists. Does it mean they are less tolerant of people's opinions that don't match their own?

I use it for people who post large quantities of unrelated pictures in a thread, or people who are more than just minor trolls.  That said, if I or anyone else wanted to filter more liberally - what do you care?  Why is anyone here obligated to read what everyone says?  If put on an ignore list, typically you'll not even know.  You won't be harmed in any way.  You're still free to feel as though you got the attention of the same number of people, that they all felt you were a special snowflake with unique and beautiful ideas.  You can feel that independent of how much of said writing of yours, that others may actually be reading.

I dunno if you know this, but some people's opinion is that they should just shiat on people.  They'll say one thing until it isn't the outside thing, then they'll say a different thing.  They just want to be obnoxious.  They're not adding to the conversation - they're derailing it.  That's what for which the ignore button is typically solving.

So now you know!

Here's my 2 cents.

So Facebook has about 50 different possibilities for gender.  I'll be honest.  A lot of them I don't understand.   I don't know what they mean or I just can't 'get' what it means to identify with a given gender.   But then, I can't really 'get' what it means to be a straight woman, because I'm not one.

I see thousands of people when I'm walking to work each day.  Some of whom I think are attractive and might daydream a bit about what 'lies beneath'.   But, at the end of the day, I'm not going to see them naked or have sex with them.   So really, how they identify themselves is pretty much irrelevant to me.   How they dress, what genitals they have, what they do with those genitals have zero impact on my life.

Of those people I have day to day interaction with, I tend to just try and pick up gender cues and use the appropriate pronouns.   If you are going to whip your genitals out and they don't match my expectation then that's more my problem than yours.

If you're a butch 300lb (seemingly male) Biker with a full beard, I will refer to you as "Sir" and use male pronouns.  If you prefer to be referred using female pronouns then politely tell me and I will apologise and do so.  Because you know what?   I couldn't care.   It doesn't cost me anything to use a female pronoun instead of a male one or vice versa.  It's not a big deal.  And its polite to refer to someone how they want to be referred to.

And some times persons with dicks trigger my 'hot chick' sensor.   I don't have a problem with that.

Playing devil's advocate here, but one of those is a medical correction (glasses), one of them is borderline medical/vanity (dental work), and the others are something to purposely adapt to cultural norms of the time to fit in.  Trans are, you know, doing the exact opposite of that.  Going against cultural norms, making fitting in a lot harder.  Not that hiding your true self from the world is preferable, of course...

I'm not saying you're wrong in your overall argument, but your logic (or at the very least, the example set you chose) is flawed.

/ I say that as a straight guy who traditionally hates most "male" things and loves "female" things.  IE: I hate football, cars, drinking, and looking at beautiful women doesn't do anything for me.   I love fashion, sappy chick flicks, and want a woman who is interested in deep relationships.   And no, I'm not a whiney hipster about it either.

Are we going by science here, or social science?  If by science alone, then your wanting to strictly apply the biological definition is all well and good.  However, part of a beauty pagent, IIRC, is showing how well one fits the social role.  Unless they start judging purely on how they look (e.g. going nude) and produce offspring (f*ck and give birth), it's about filling the social roles and that falls under the social science definition of gender.

Her statement of being no less female than the rest is culturally accurate, as that is the gender role she has accepted in her life.  Then again, Brits are much more accepting of this than the US.

Boils down to a simple maxim: life is too short for some brands of bullsh*t.

As for the folks who don't have trans folks in their lives, I can understand a part of the issue of non-acceptance. It's as common on both the heterosexual as well as homosexual sides. There are a damn lot of folks who are gay and lesbian who REALLY just want bisexuals to pick a side. There are a lot of folks who are gay and lesbian who are creeped out by the T portion of LGBT. That tends to change, when you see and have folks in your life who are grappling with these sorts of issues. Some are just plain chemical, some are some damn ugly, absolutely heart breaking trauma that when you understand the impetus, you want to take a f*cking chainsaw to a fair amount of their family tree, and cleanse the debris with fire. Human sexuality isn't a linear progression, it's not as simple as one or another. It's not even a spectrum. The one great truth about human sexuality is variation. Which oddly enough means, that most of us can pretty much be assured that we are someone's fetish.

So long as folks are all consenting, and aware, then drive on. Be happy. Love one another, and if you're not into someone, then don't f*ck 'em. Plain and simple. Just because you don't want to f*ck 'em, doesn't mean someone else doesn't. Big boned, rail thin, too big a nose, not the right religion, too dark, too pale, wrong attitude, listens to the wrong music, really hates Star Wars, voted Republican, voted Democrat, there are a plethora of reasons that folks will consider you an inappropriate bunk up. And yeah, being the wrong sex IS one of them. And then there's a lot of gray area, and boils down to it, what YOU like, and what OTHER people like doesn't have to be the same. So long as everyone is consenting, and happy with one another, drive on. I may not agree that I find it particularly attractive, but if I ain't f*cking them, it's none of my damn business. Be happy with what you got, and thems that find you awfully fun and good for them. There is not one iota of happiness drained from the Universe if someone you don't find attractive or a good partner finds someone that likes them--well, unless of course you're sort of douche who enjoys other folk's misery, and then perhaps foiling your happiness IS indeed adding the happiness quotient of the Universe, and in that case you maybe need a good punch in the tacklebox for good measure, but again, the rule of the Universe in matters of sex IS variation so you're at least holding to that constant.

My Grandmother, a good KC Lady, the same woman who taught me to drink, and who bawled me out for being dickish on more than a few occasions, had a simple rule: mind your own damn business. Don't like? Don't eat it. But never mind what's on anyone else's...

And on another note: as a nominally straight man, our own tinfoilled maggie is adorable just the way she is. Drive on, you, and be the best you, you can be.

As far as "my acceptance" goes, hey, you already have it.  I don't care what you do with your genitalia.  I am happy for you, as are my trans friends (who admittedly weren't out as trans when I met them, but that's here nor there).  But I think it's pretty obvious that yes, you do want acceptance.  Outside of humans being social animals that of course want to be accepted into the group dynamic, if you truly didn't need others' acceptance you wouldn't be in this thread, screaming to the heavens for someone to "suck your dick" over a movie quote.  You wouldn't be proudly proclaiming that you have sent out multiple BIEs with no one realizing you were trans.

You obviously want acceptance, even if not on an individual basis, or you wouldn't be here.  And that's fine, and expected.  And I also can't blame you for your anger, and wouldn't presume as a straight, white male to even begin to try to take that away from you.  The world sucks for people with your circumstances.  I'm just saying that misplaced anger and pessimism just keeps you angry, and doesn't fix anything.  All it does is drive people away.

In a nutshell.

While I can see that, and understand it to a point, he wasn't here for the entire thread.  He posted at the begining, and presumably went off to work or something, unlike us slackers.  Most people here took turns using his post like a virtual pinata.  He came back to see 250 posts condemning him as a bigot.

He could have covered it better, but I also get why he responded the way he did.  Much like I can understand why people that didn't recognize the quote would react the way they did.  I'm saying that the fail was going both ways.

So your argument is that he is a bigot and deserved this virtual shaming because he made a reference to a movie you didn't get, no matter what he actually believes, simply for the offense of assuming people would know the movie in question?  I mean, in ordinary circles or at a dinner party, that wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that someone was being a dick.  Just blurting that out to a bunch of people that aren't likely in on the joke would be uncalled for.

But this is Fark.  Just in the last 24 hours I've seen quoted references to the 1927 Metropolis movie, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and two quotes from Optimus Prime.  If Monty Python is too obscure, things have gone crooked somewhere.

You earned the smackdown, an apology is in order from you, not Maggie.

Wasn't he just quoting "Life of Brian?"  Isn't that something Fark always does, quote Monty Python at the slightest provocation?  I mean, it IS Fark.  Making off color jokes and references to various movies in geek culture is just kind of our thing, even if the joke is the complete opposite of what we feel.  See also: my joke about bisexuals being greedy and/or lazy.

Yes, it was a quote from Life of Brian. Someone else also pointed this out upthread with a youtube link to the scene. XX males have nothing to do with this story or virtually any transsexual situation, but when a person has XY sex chromosomes and was born with a penis, that's a male. That male can wish he were a female or think that he is, and expect everyone to address him as such, but it doesn't change the fact that they are male.

The first time I read that sentence I thought that "Brave" was her new chosen first name (as many transgender people understandably seem to do after their change), and thought the same thing. But in the rest of TFA they refer to her only as Jordan, so it seems like it's the author who's just saying that she's brave. I'm assuming that confusion is the source of your opinion.

As for the body dysmorphia, I've thought about this before and I think that the distinction is that someone who is truly dysmorphic will never be happy with their appearance no matter how they look (think bag-of-antlers anorexic girls who still think they're fat), while someone like her can be satisfied and move on with her life after her change. I'm sure there are transgender people who are also dysmorphic, but it doesn't seem to be across the board.

When someone announces that they're transitioning as some sort of challenge I tend to get a little annoyed. It's basically:

"I'm transgender, what do you thing about that?"

I met a kid at a local anime convention who pretty much did just that. I guess he figured he'd shock the middle aged white guy and didn't expect a critique of his overuse of foundation. Less is more, kids.

Actually, it's not. It's a mental illness based on an incompatibility between one's obvious physical sex and one's felt gender. That's been made into a political/social identity of victimhood and mutilation for pay, instead of forcing Society to admit that its traditional sex/gender roles are bullshiat. If society admitted that you can look like that Duck Dynasty blowhard and be femme as all get-out there would be no need for all this, and then how would those surgeons buy their Jaguars?

The time might be spent more fruitfully pondering eternal questions such as whether or not chronic masturbation is in any way homosexual, since you are touching a penis with such frequency.

Weatherkiss: I guess I see it in a different way. There are some people who just want to live a normal life. Like maggie said, noone knows she's trans unless she says so. Otherwise she isn't a label, she's just a person. There are lots of trans people who no one would know any different (or would care) unless they speak up about it.

Sometimes there's a need for distinction (like the Olympics when the identity of 'gender' is decided upon by various psychiatrists, physicians, etc. since that identity is no longer cut-and-dry in one form or another), but for most everyday life there's no real need to bring it up.

I find people who have the need to bring it up as often as they possibly can do it because of personal issues. But it's not something unique to trans people, it's for many kinds of people. Gay and bi people do it. People of particular job professions do it. People from Texas do it. I think all of those people have personal issues where they have to feel like the only way to be accepted is to force some kind of conflict where someone is forced into being uncomfortable with them, and that they're 'accepted' by forcing others into thinking they're a guilty party for being uncomfortable.

Which is really just a human thing. Like that Tea Party nutjob who said, "Liberals really get angry when you say the pledge allegiance as loud as you possibly can.". Maybe there are a few, but for the most part people don't give a fark what this guy does with his life.

That is true in many senses. The people who make an over-issue of their 'uniqueness' do tend to have personal issues. They believe it is a personal attack on them as a whole, rather than one small facet of their entire personality. As mentioned in my earlier statement, there are some who are disturbed by the new 'lifestyles' that are being bandied about. They have just as much right to their opinion as the others, yet an attack on people with more 'traditional' values is ok and even encouraged. There is an illness at play, but as a nation we will get over it in time.

I agree with your assessment that the 'average person' isn't really concerned about what others do with their own lives, as long as it doesn't harm the public at large or children. Unfortunately, both sides of any issue are the 'fringe' and both end up saying that 'the American people agree with me'. A sensationalist statement considering it isn't really feasible to poll every American (without fraud on either side) to find out how they really feel on any particular subject matter. It's a miserable world right now where lifestyles (whether progressive or traditional) are attacked.

Not really, not to any literate person. You distinctly lumped tinfoil-hat maggie with mentally ill people, and now you're trying to cover yourself.
Well, you are, but it's in crap.

I prefer to live in a world of gray when many people on Fark live in a world of black and white. I've been called mentally ill for having a concealed carry and an open carry permit. I've been labelled this or that because I have positions outside of the Fark majority of a thread. I took his phrasing as two distinct observations (trans can be mentally ill, but not all trans are mentally ill).

But when it comes down to Fark threads, and blatant insults, it's easier to cover someone with a mentally ill label than putting forth the energy to consider maybe they're just different.

By nature, humans are a lot alike. In this new era of 'its ok the be different', it's difficult for some people to make the adjustment. Being different from Status Quo is becoming the Status Quo. People who have/had trouble expressing their self-identity have come out in a wave. People do not always react well to change, even though change is inevitable.

I guess I see it in a different way. There are some people who just want to live a normal life. Like maggie said, noone knows she's trans unless she says so. Otherwise she isn't a label, she's just a person. There are lots of trans people who no one would know any different (or would care) unless they speak up about it.

The One True TheDavid: "You don't have to look or be a certain way to be beautiful.

True.

You know: the Earth revolves around the Sun, and (at least among mammals) a female is one who is born XX...

Maybe it could have been "taken either way" when you had it in your head before you typed it out. However, the way you typed the reply out does imply (and readily lends itself to the interpretation) that you think transgender people are mentally ill.

I am happy to be wrong about this, but that's the implication I got when I read it.
