VladTheEmailer: insertsnarkyusername: I'm curious anyone here that identifies as straight willing to date or have sex with a MTF transgendered person?

I don't have a problem with that conceptually.
Frankly, the only person that I have ever met and interacted with that I know for a fact* was post operative Male-to-female.
I knew her briefly as a man.   She wasn't an attractive man, and sadly she made (to my eyes) an even less attractive female.  So that any desire to date her was very much off the table.  But that wasn't related to her being transgendered.

// * I am notoriously oblivious to this kind of thing.   So I might have known others but just not realised it.
// My gaydar, for example, only kicks in for Richard Simmons level flaming.

I personally think that the question you're responding to is a rather loaded one. Ignoring the fact that sexual orientation gets downright complicated and off the Kinsey scale when dealing with someone who is TG or TS, pretty much no answer you give to that is going to satisfy the goal of the question.

Even if someone who identified as straight said "Sure, why not!", the person who asked it could retort back "You're not really straight, then!" as a way to deflect the answer.

/has dated a TG girl before. Right after high school.
//She was cute. Sad she moved away because of the bigotry she got.

Pretty much, yeah.  He should have came, explained himself and how he didn't mean to offend.  Only did his angry post if people persisted in just angrily railing him for an accidental slight.

I never said he was innocent.  Well, accidentally guilty to start, and uncivil in response I guess.

Yeah, you know how some people just listen to the song, and sing along to the hook?  Never take much deeper meaning?  That was me up until a couple years ago.  I'm getting better and more picky about what I listen to in my old age, but I have some catching up to do.

Interesting, I don't think I could personally. The reason I asked this question is a friend of mine recently announced they wanted a change of pronouns(FTM). I obviously support him, but I am a bit worried he will end up disappointed because he wants a straight woman as a partner. This of course led to discussion among our wider group of friends and the question was asked to straight men and women, gay men, lesbians and bisexuals. Basically only the bisexual or pansexual people gave a strong yes answer.

/This conversation took place at a bar with a ten foot tall rainbow flag covering one wall. So we had a good mix of people jumping into the conversation that night when we were discussing it.

"THE SPARTOI (or Sparti) were a race of warlike, earth-born warriors, which sprang fully grown, armed and ready for battle from the sown teeth of a Drakon sacred to the war-god Ares. Two batches of Spartoi were sown. The first were those of Thebes, sown by the hero Kadmos from the teeth of the sacred Drakon of the spring of Ismene. He cast a stone among them as they were emerging from the earth and they fell to fighting. Only five survived the battle, who joined Kadmos in the founding of the city of Thebes. The second batch was sown by Iason (or Jason) in the fields of Kolkhis on the Black Sea. The task was demanded of him by King Aeëtes, from whom he and the Argonauts had come to fetch the Golden Fleece. Like Kadmos he threw a stone among these earth-born warriors and they fell to fighting."

Shadowknight: Even after people corrected for him, and told you it was a movie quote from one of Fark's most beloved institutions, the slinging continued.

Au contraire... As I said above, I called him out specifically for making a crappy joke and then getting angry at the people who didn't get it. That has nothing to do with whether it's a movie quote or not.

You burned him in effigy over an attempt, failed as it may be, at a joke.  His response was just as uncouth, but it doesn't excuse what came before.

Nope, I burned him in effigy solely for his response. Scroll back. With his initial joke, I also didn't get the context, and thought he was just a troll worthy of ignoring. It was only once he returned and acted like a dick instead of properly apologizing that I got involved.

But, I can see you are entrenched in your position and won't be swayed.  In fact, you're probably just as happy to toss me on the digital pyre.  Whatever makes you feel righteous.

I'm only tossing  you on the digital pyre for your criticism of Maggie's understandable response and equivocation of "insulting joke" and "getting insulted" as being equally bad.

Meh, I don't really care whether someone says 'You're not really straight, then'.  Being called gay is hardly the worse thing that's ever happened to me.   I tend to agree with  hardinparamedic's diagram human sexuality isn't really a binary thing.  I tend to round down to 'straight'.   If other people use different rounding rules then so be it.

My current virtual nickname and email of choice is "PapaBear."  My wife and our mutual friend gave me that because I'm large, hairy, and had a kid.  Of course, what our mutual friend (who happens to be a "bear hunter" by his own terminology) didn't tell me until after I registered it with Gmail that it was also a term for the biggest, hairiest guy in the leather bar.

Some initial embarrassment aside, I decided I liked it too much to abandon it.  But I had to create a more appropriate one for my business emails, though.

I admit, I have taken this a bit far for trying to be an arbitrator for an internet argument.  But I guess I had faith that Farkers (again, outside of the politics tab) could get along on something as mutually beloved as Monty Python.

False equivalency, though. Her perhaps* oversensitivity to his initial attempt at a joke was negligible in comparison to his refusal to apologize. Equating the two minimizes her feelings.

*I don't necessarily agree that it was oversensitive.  As Maggie noted, there are many highly insulting and transphobic "jokes" that people present in these threads.  When the proverbial wheat is indistinguishable from the chaff unless you get a particular reference, is it really being oversensitive to throw it all out?

Consider, if a bunch of people were calling someone the n-word, and you showed up and said "yeah, he's an N-bong!", would it be valid to call them oversensitive for not immediately getting your Blazing Saddles joke?

Furthermore, if they said "fark you," and you returned and said "how dare you get upset with me, I was on your side before but now maybe I won't be," would you really suggest that both responses are equally bad?

I love Life of Brian. However, outside of a few select passages, I couldn't tell a quote from it from a quote from the latest Disney movie.

Alright, maybe that's a bit much, but my point is not everyone has all of Fark's favorites memorized.

In casual conversation, no, I wouldn't expect people to get the Blazing Saddles joke.  But here on Fark?  I don't think there's a politics thread, especially involving Obama, that doesn't have at least one N-BONG joke.  From an Obama supporter.

Furthermore, if they said "fark you," and you returned and said "how dare you get upset with me, I was on your side before but now maybe I won't be," would you really suggest that both responses are equally bad?

No, that would not be a reasonable response and I would have apologized and explained myself.  Probably ducked out with my tail between my legs after.  But its all academic, because the way you used it would have just been a stupid way with no real call back to the original gag outside of the actual word...

You just figured that out: )

runcible spork: So why are you here?

Entertainment mostly.  And occasionally I learn something from one of you serious people.  For instance, I just learned the etymology of the word 'runcible.'  (I appreciate the cleverness of the name much more now, btw)

/ thanks for the apology
// but I see you still have a name-calling issue

I did include the winkie face to try and convey that the name calling was in jest.  I know you're not really a douchenozzlette.  That is such a fun word to say though, I couldn't resist.

It's a good thing I'm pretty.

insertsnarkyusername: VladTheEmailer: insertsnarkyusername: I'm curious anyone here that identifies as straight willing to date or have sex with a MTF transgendered person?

I don't have a problem with that conceptually.
Frankly, the only person that I have ever met and interacted with that I know for a fact* was post operative Male-to-female.
I knew her briefly as a man.   She wasn't an attractive man, and sadly she made (to my eyes) an even less attractive female.  So that any desire to date her was very much off the table.  But that wasn't related to her being transgendered.

// * I am notoriously oblivious to this kind of thing.   So I might have known others but just not realised it.
// My gaydar, for example, only kicks in for Richard Simmons level flaming.

They would still have to meet my 'minimum threshold for female beauty'.   Being TG doesn't get any politically-correct adjustments.   But, as a friend once pointed out, my minimum threshold is actually remarkably low.

1. I posted a poorly thought out joke.
2. Maggie went batshiat over it and everyone else jumped on the dog pile and took it to eleven.
3. I came back and tried to explain myself.
4. Everyone started playing the blame game and everything started all over again.

Therefore:

A. You win, I lose. I'm sorry. I'll go stand in the corner now. Happy?
B. Then I'm going to go have dinner.
C. I will not be back to this thread.

The fact that you see interactions with others as a competition in which only one person can win is possibly part of your problem.
