Which team? You could make an argument for both.

Delicious.

Sure, I want the US to win gold, but this is satisfying indeed.

I blame Putin for picking Zinetula Bilyaletdinov. Putin is the James Dolan of dictators.

Also, this is what happens when you have 17 dudes named Alex on your team.

What happened to the Russian guarantee of a repeat of the 1972 summit series for the gold to re-assert their hockey dominance?

If Putin put on the skates, they could have won.

I can point you to a webcomic where he was the slightly-altered namesake of a pet ferret.

They obviously sucked in the group rounds, so no surprise.  For that many superstars they sure can't seem to put together any sort of passing game.

Honestly, I can't remember a time I've seen a Russian national hockey squad "impress" me during a competition. Something about putting modern Russians together just creates the idyllic "every negative perception Don Cherry has of Europeans" performance.

The Sweden/Finland game is going to be amazing. The two countries have a bit of a testy relationship already, and they can't stand each other when it comes to hockey. If the US and Canada both win today too, there will be a couple of border wars tomorrow!

/and of course I'm no where near a TV now, dammit

I love how NBC likes to try to 'claim' as many foreign athletes as possible for the United States.

Is that some kind of joke? Russia had the most talented team, by composition. Yes, Finland and Sweden both have such a chance, although I think Sweden is better.

(Going into medal round, I ranked the teams as follows in my head)
(only the first 5 had any chance of going to the final, in my opinion)
1. Canada
2. Russia
3. USA
4. Sweden
5. Finland
6. Czech
7. Swiss
8. Who cares?

2006 Olympics

Gold - Finland
Silver - Sweden
Bronze - Czech

sorry that's obviously backwards, sweden took gold, peter forsberg scored a classic goal to clinch in a shootout (yes, shootouts are lame but it was a classic goal anyways)

Absolutely yes.  Assuming that either the US or Canada will be in the final, I would say that the final will be a total 50/50 game no matter who's in it.

You're a little out of whack with a lot of things there.  Sweden did indeed take the gold over Finland in 2006, but it was not in a shootout.  Forsberg's goal was against Canada in the 1994 Lillehammer Games.

Nice.

Anywho, this is what happens when you favor individual talent over a cohesive unit.  When you have to put Nikolai Kulemin out on the power play just to establish some responsible puck work your team shouldn't even be there.

No slight to Nik, he's a good player, just illustrating how lousy Russia was playing as a team.

I can't remember with particular EA Sports NHL game it was, but I remember for one of them, the canned piece of color commentary you heard every other time Forsberg touched the puck during gameplay was how his 1994 shootout goal became a postage stamp in Sweden.

I only share this because to this day, sometimes I hear Bill Clement say this in my head from that video game, all these years later.

There was no coming back in that game. Rask was in the zone, and the ice was terrible. Every team has looked slow and lacklustre in the final minutes of each period in that rink.

The Finns played as a team and stuck to their plan. Russia was way too cute...seems like they made one pass too many time after time.

Canada is going to handle the Latvians with ease, but they are in tough against every other team. I can see us losing to the USA in the semi final big time.

/We'll always have Vancouver
//And Salt Lake

Great Leader of the Tusken Raiders.  Killed a Bantha using his quick reflexes and consistent fundamental positioning!  Was killed when some angry young Jedi went five-hole on him with a light saber.
