Nope. That's merely the set up for this :

In the past two months, according to police, three women have been shot by thieves over their pocketbooks. And Thursday, a man was shot chasing men who snatched his girlfriend's purse.
Why indeed.

Wait:  I thought they were in every sense equal to men.  Is this not so?

Of course not.  The average woman is smaller and not as strong as the average man.  Now, if only there were some kind of way to even up the odds a bit, some sort of "equalizer" that a woman could carry that would make them less vulnerable to males....

Nah, that's just a pipe dream.

Encourage women to own firearms and learn how to use them--and that means more than just target shooting. Nikki Craft understood this decades ago, when she and several fellow feminists formed an armed women's group. The liberals around her were shocked and horrified that she did this. Stand-up, respectable fighter, Ms. Craft. May not agree with all her politics, but I agree with and understand her point in that case--if the feminist rhetoric is true and women cannot rely upon men to protect them or to even not treat them brutally, then it behooves women to use any means necessary to defend themselves.

I'm not sure how I, as a man, without a firearm am supposed to help this woman?

If I give her advice about taking a cab, avoiding parts of town, not traveling in the dark, not insulting the guy mugging you with the gun, not dressing a certain way or other helpful advice, I'll be accused of mansplaining, or about stepping on her freedoms.

When my daughter went to college in Boston and walked home from the library (Yeah, right) late at night, she'd wear a Red Sox hat and hoodie, and if anyone approached her, she'd tell them to "fark off" in her best Boston accent.  She claims it worked.   When their was a specific concern about a series of muggings between Back Bay and her apartment, she took a cab.

My wife carries a nice Coach.  ~$500 retail, but fence price is going to be 10-20% and keep in mind that's based on the used price (Coach bags come in special bags) so your $500 retail bag is worth $25-$50 cash as a stolen, used item.

And Louis Vuitton my ass.  When you see the LV LV LV LV pattern, it's probably a fake.  People with money don't need to cover it in repetitive logos.  They sell LV bags along with CHANEL bags and the Coaches with the repetitive C's outside of the Five Points MARTA station.

When I was 15 I snuck out of my foster home at night to buy some weed. Went to a nearby school to meet the contact. I get there very quickly and immediately two strangers appear and whipped a toque over my head. They then demanded my money. I told them I didn't have any, which was true, and further added I was looking to get a loan of the weeds. The lightly punched me a few times in the head and arm, and told me not to take the toque off until I couldn't hear them anymore. Then they ran away. So at least I got a free toque.

Not to mention trying to raise men from boys without a man to put the fear of a real ass-whuppin' in them to keep them straight and narrow.

Back when I was a teen and suffering from the normal amount of testosterone poisoning, I stopped fearing what my mother could do for punishment:  I was faster, stronger, and bigger than she was.  Her attempts to intimidate me into obeying were (to me at the time) laughable.

The *ONLY* ace card she held was "Wait until your father gets home", and what an ace card that was.

Not that I was all that bad of a kid, but I could have gone over to the dark side relatively easily without the steadying influence of an older, wiser male to keep me from going in that direction.

That's not to say that it's a fool-proof, 100% successful arrangement, but it's a damn sight better than having just a single female parent (especially one who got pregnant as a teen herself) raising a male child who has never had the constant steadying influence of a male.

There is an almost 1 to 1 relationship between crime rates and the rate of out-of-wedlock births in a given area.  The higher the bastardy rate, the higher the crime rate.

Silly_Sot: Benevolent Misanthrope: ZAZ: The mayor of Boston recently warned women not to walk alone at night after a series of assaults. Cue the angry feminist newspaper columnist.

Right.  The angry feminist is the problem.  Not the fact that women cant walk alone at night.  Men can, by and large, walk at night.  Women canèt walk at night.  Because of the men.

Well, that was special.
Where do you think women store these self defense firearms for easy access?

dittybopper: Of course not. The average woman is smaller and not as strong as the average man. Now, if only there were some kind of way to even up the odds a bit, some sort of "equalizer" that a woman could carry that would make them less vulnerable to males....

Now there's a capital idea; arm all the flighty nervous dames with hot iron so they can put a slug in every man who tips his hat to them on the street. Then they pout those little lips of theirs and the judge lets them off with self defense!

Or is it 'amusing' because women are being senselessly murdered?

Maybe I don't get it.

Do any of you message board misogynists care to explain it to me?

There seemed to be an assumption on the part of the woman interviewed that the lives of men were worth less than the contents of her purse eg the quote "Where are our men? Why are they not protecting us?" Sanchez continued, her voice full of frustration. "Men are failing us. I feel as though we are not being protected."

Personally I feel that by my not robbing/murdering Ms Sanchez or any other woman that I have achieved the bare minimum of necessary effort to avoid accusations of misogyny...until you started posting.

This.

After years of being treated as disposable, unwanted, or worse, men are starting to check out of the game.

Just the idea of a man can give some women a case of the vapours, See the recent kerfuffle at Wellesley College for an example. There are safe spaces set up where men aren't allowed, or at best, get to sit quietly in the corner and nod in agreement. Sitting the 'wrong' way on public transit creates a large outcry.

Pretty much, women have been telling average men that they don't want or need them, and society would be better off without men.

Now that women are getting what they said they want, it seems that some of them are unhappy with it.

While I'd agree there's a lot more fakes out there than the real thing, people with money buy the exact same shiat -- they just pay a lot more for it.

Notice that while I haven't bothered to find a similar bag style, both patterns you call out with your images are real LV patterns, or at least close to them.

I know that it's a real pattern, but I also realize that the greater amount of logo exposure among a conspicuous consumption object, the greater likelihood that it's a fake.

I don't agree that a man is required to raise a man.  I'm the child of a single mother and I'm neither a criminal or a fop.  I think the issue is that humans, especially males, tends to respond to adversity with aggression.  This is not always a bad thing, aggression in the face of starvation could lead to killing an animal for food, or in more modern times aggression in the face of an attack could defend you or your family.  Aggression over being turned down for sex, well that's a big farking problem.  Instead of teaching children when aggression is a valid response and when it is not, we instead teach them aggression is never a valid response. That confrontation is wrong and that the authorities will save us.  You can't do all these things and then complain when nobody will stand up to a criminal assholes.

So your argument is the existence of a sport that is continually reducing the amount of contact in minor leagues and wars that are orders of magnitude less bloody than previous wars?  Don't get me wrong neither of those things is bad, head injuries are serious business, and war is unquestionably a bad thing, but I don't really think you have tried very hard to refute my point.

You mean the woman who walked out of a bar in a downtown city area after midnight with her girlfriend, whence she and her friend got mugged and shot and her knee-jerk response is:

"Why wasnt a MAN here to protect me?"

My snarky answer is: Probably with the rest of the men that she blames for things that genuinely arent their fault/ concern.
My more reasonable response is: Not out at a bar in a shady area of town after dark, alone.

Benevolent Misanthrope: ZAZ: The mayor of Boston recently warned women not to walk alone at night after a series of assaults. Cue the angry feminist newspaper columnist.

Right.  The angry feminist is the problem.  Not the fact that women cant walk alone at night.  Men can, by and large, walk at night.  Women canèt walk at night.  Because of the men.

You know, I think you have made the most important comment in the whole thread right here. A violent crime was committed and the potato gallery here is mocking the victim.

But she did say this to the newspaper and the world: "Where are our men? Why are they not protecting us?" Sanchez continued, her voice full of frustration. "Men are failing us. I feel as though we are not being protected."

Perhaps and just maybe, in the awkward guise of mocking feminists, we are actually mocking an individual that failed to take personal responsibility.

Sucks that there was a victim. But that person failed to live in the same world as the rest of us, where gender biased violence does happen and needs to be guarded against. She expected 'a man' to be there to protect her and her expectations were not met and then she whined about that.

Bummer about being a victim. But in good conscience I will still groan and shake my head about the fact that she was a dumb victim.

There are exceptions to every rule, as I pointed out.  You may well be that exception.

Or, it could be that while you were raised by a single mother, it was in the company of peers who had fathers, and you emulated to a large degree what your peers were doing.  That's how children from single mothers can mostly turn out OK in areas where the overwhelming majority of kids have 2 parent families.

Now, in those areas where the overwhelming majority (over 75%, in some areas) are single female parent households, those are the areas where you have the majority of crime.  Yet even there, some kids turn out OK.

So yeah, you are a data point, but just one of many.

Good point. Now, while my reply isn't that she MUST pay for the imagined crimes of feminism, (as if it was my choice to extract such a form of payment from her,) the reality is that she's either right, and a man could and would have been her salvation, or she's wrong, (and a sexist to boot,) and that a man with her would have just provided another victim. IMHO, the women saying "Men have a duty to protect us" are about on par with the men who claim women should be barefoot in the kitchen making sammiches. Maybe even worse, as there's an actual risk to life and limb involved (OTOH the sammiches one implies a lifelong role).

And Wendy's Chili, "to deprive of masculine role or status" is a perfectly cromulent definition of "emasculate" and you know it. Women are allowed to be be wrong about things.

Wanting a man to protect you is one thing, blaming men for your assault by not being there is another. Have you seen the cost of a Coach or Louis Vuitton?

My wife carries a nice Coach.  ~$500 retail, but fence price is going to be 10-20% and keep in mind that's based on the used price (Coach bags come in special bags) so your $500 retail bag is worth $25-$50 cash as a stolen, used item.

And Louis Vuitton my ass.  When you see the LV LV LV LV pattern, it's probably a fake.  People with money don't need to cover it in repetitive logos.  They sell LV bags along with CHANEL bags and the Coaches with the repetitive C's outside of the Five Points MARTA station.

The reason she's getting so much flack is not just because she was not too smart for being where she was (I grew up in Philly, am a 6'1" guy, and I wouldn't be where she was after midnight), but that there are plenty more women (in my experience) who would voice the same sentiments if asked. The idea that she is not alone is the real ass-kicker in a society which more and more has made men superfluous, a vestigial, appendix-like organ rather than a vital and necessary part of the body.

The whole gist of the ire at her stems from decades of daughters being told that men weren't necessary anymore, yet she chooses to call upon us for protection and bemoans the fact that we aren't there. The sad thing is that I have YET to hear any father tell his son that women aren't necessary or needed, FARK memes ("Disregard Females, Acquire Currency") aside.

Saying you don't need men then complaining when they aren't around is like complaining that the supermarket doesn't have creamed corn for sale when you don't like creamed corn.

Young men suffer from what I like to call "Testosterone Poisoning".   Without serious guidance, both before and during that time period, they can be quite assholish, and if it becomes a habit at that age, it carries on into later life.

So men are essentially animals that have to be trained to live in a civilized society. Okay.

Largely, yes.

So are women, but they are mostly less physically aggressive.  Mostly.

It's a cynical view but I can understand why one might hold it. My only irk is when it boils down to "Men can't control themselves so it's up to you women!"

trickymoo: Wendy's Chili: Ker_Thwap: Wendy's Chili: rustypouch: I find that feminists, or actually SJW types, have gotten so loud that sane women have their voices drowned out, or are unable to speak up. As a result, what men tend to hear is that they're all terrible people who should avoid women.

Look that the gong show that happened when a man dared to talk to a certain blogess.

Ya know, I often read dumb internet feminist shiat on Slate or Salon and think to myself, "What kind of backward-ass neanderthal planet are these retarded bloggers living on?" but then I see this thread full of men (and I use that term loosely) saying that women deserve to be killed because they cut their dicks off and refuse to sleep with them, and I'm like, "Oh, THIS backward-ass neanderthal planet."

I think you're painting with a broad brush, which isn't any more helpful than the misogynists' foolishness.   Just for giggles, tell us how you would respond to this woman's question?

"Most of them were probably at home sleeping."

This woman is simply scared and, rightly or wrongly, looking to men for help. If, as a man, your reaction to her is, "Haha, biatch! You must pay for the crimes of Gloria Steinam!" you need to seek help.

Quit mansplaining to her. It's tough being a femposter in this stupid stupid man's world.

Or is it 'amusing' because women are being senselessly murdered?

Maybe I don't get it.

and I think to myself, "OK, so you're going to gun down a guy who wants to rape you or stab you or steal your purse or something. That's great and all but if you are carrying a purse because you're wearing a slinky, little, red, party dress without pockets... even if you have a concealed weapons permit, were are you going to conceal the weapon?  If you put it in your purse and a snatcher runs off with it, he gets a free gun as a bonus.  And are you really going to be able to have a criminal stand around and wait while you dig out a gun that you've been hiding on yourself somewhere?"

I don't know why people are complaining about feminism, since the woman quoted as believing that men should protect women obviously has more traditional beliefs and is not a feminist.

But I guess women are one giant hivemind?

Fark ITGs never pass up an opportunity to rage-post about the turrible damage done by feminism, regardless of whether it's relevant to the subject at hand. And yes, somehow whenever a woman is beaten, robbed, raped, etc., feminism is somehow to blame. Because reasons.

padraig: I always thought that the handbag was the stupidest thing on Earth : sure, ladies, put ALL your valuable possessions in one easy-to-snatch bag. Even more better when the bag itself is more several times the iPhone that it contains, your money, your papers, and so on...

Thieves snatch purses because it's easy. Police tells people not to leave valuable in plain sights in cars. A Vuitton bag is a big "Rob me" sign.

Robbers gonna' rob. They need dope, ciggies, booze and food just like us working stiffs.  The handbag makes it easy and perhaps saves lives by limiting the "transaction" time. With no handbag to quickly make off with, the victim would be standing with her arms raised as the guy or girl robbing her rummages around in her pockets and bra.

The concealed part of carry is a bit worrisome.  Either nobody gets a gun or every man, woman  and child who can lift one walks around with one strapped to their ass.  Cause anything else is just more hide and seek with our better interests.

That is likely one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life. It made no sense when it was popular, and it still doesn't. I thought maybe it would make sense to me when I grew up and became this mature, empowered female of the 70's, but no, it never did. It's just dildos.

It's even dumber than "you can't hug your child with nuclear arms" which at least has a cute pun in it.

The fact she is debating fashion verses safe and practical explains a lot about women.  Concealing valuables on the person for the purpose of safety from theft is the main reason why most men don't carry handbags.  Silly womens and all their baggages.

As a man myself, I rather doubt that. The main reason is that we don't want to carry a whole bunch of shiat around in the first place. There would be nothing to put in a bag, even if we carried one.

Wallet? Check. Car / house keys? Check. Phone? Check.

Everything else left at home? Check and mate.

I will. I'm too old to not be set in my ways, and too young to care about rude folks when most people I hold the door for smile graciously and give a quick "Thank you". It's the polite thing to do, and despite not being from the south I have lived here long enough to learn that most people from here are polite. Or maybe that's just the Nashville people.
