According to Khaleejtimes.com it said: 'Such a one-way journey poses a real risk to life, and that can never be justified in Islam. There is a possibility that an individual who travels to planet Mars may not be able to remain alive there, and is more vulnerable to death.'

Alright.  Then explain why Detroit's OK?

Or maybe they don't want to bother because it's just a hassle to pray in space:

Muslims on Earth face Mecca, in central Saudi Arabia, when they pray. The MNSA suggests that the astronaut pray toward Mecca as much as possible, or at the Earth in general. But if it becomes necessary, the astronaut may simply face any direction.

The attitude while at prayer is also an issue. In zero gravity, the sequence of the praying postures - standing, bowing, kneeling, and prostrating oneself - is difficult at best. Malaysian Islamic authorities say the astronaut should stand, preferably. If he can't stand, he should sit. If he can't sit, he should lie down. And if he can't do any of those, he's allowed to symbolically indicate the postures "with his eyelids" or to simply imagine them, according to the MNSA booklet.

Yes, there have been lots of fatwa's released in the past saying that suicide bombers are wrong according to the particular imam releasing it. Maybe it is your own blinkered idea that Muslims are all of one mind on every issue that is the problem?

Meh, I'd feel a bit uneasy talking shiat about them for this, since their reasoning is actually 99.9% of why the US hasn't done it in the last 50 years either.

We've had the technology to set up a Mars colony pretty much since the mid-70s, and even the resources.  We haven't done it pretty much entirely for the reasons the clerics just listed: there is no return trip, so you'd end up dying out there, and there's not really any overriding scientific reason for a person to go when a robot works just as well.

Basically, this sounds less like a "DIE INFIDELS" fatwa and more... just a normal fatwa, a cleric issuing a not-really-binding opinion on a moral matter like they're supposed to do.  Issuing the religious equivalent of a regular Dear Abby column for believers struggling with random moral questions is basically why clerics exist in Islam.  It's not like it has big group ceremonies that require priests and shiat like Christianity, the actual duties of the religion require the occasional assistance of a mat for your knees, maybe, but never the assistance of a cleric.  They're really scholars more than what most of the west would call "priests".

"The committee argued that an attempt to dwell on the planet would be so hazardous as to be suicidal and killing oneself is not permitted by Islam."

"The astronauts, the committee said, would end up dying for no 'righteous reason' and would face the same punishment in the afterlife as someone who'd committed suicide."

But blowing oneself up or flying planes into buildings is ok because those are righteous deaths.

Exactly.  It's like an opinion piece.  Just more official.  Some Muslims are interested in the idea, so the clerics are weighing in.

So what about suicide bombers, or anyone who goes to war? Their logic makes no sense, as is true with most religions. Dry the fark up, and blow away outdated, outmoded, douche bag clerics of all religions. Leave right thinking people to do right thinking things and carry on in your cave living ways doing whatever primitive things make you right with your god. Just, you know, leave people who are not pyschotic due to religion alone to progress and stuff.

If we set up a colony on mars then the general idea is that you will die on mars.  Hopefully of a ripe long old life.  That is the end game of a colony.  To live, to breed, to die with enough resources out there for the next generation RInse Repeat.  I see no reason that a return trip is necessary if a sustainable colony is possible.
