I'm sure it has nothing to do with your skunky beer tasting like shiat Carlsberg.

Maybe people just aren't drinking as much beer as they used to? No, that can't be it. *crazy talk*

Nonono, we're not losing market share, the market just got smaller.  That's the ticket.

If you are taking your economic advice from a beer maker, you shouldn't be allowed near sharp objects

Beer is the last thing that gets cut from my budget.

I have been drinking less beer, but I've been drinking better beer.

Well, better beer than YOU'VE been drinking.

This, and a million better options.

shiat macros will continue to see their market share shrink as beer drinkers find better (and usually local) options.

Actually people usually drink more in a recession so if they are drinking less then the economy must be improving.

2014-02-19 11:32:43 AM
Where did they mention cutting production in that link?

I drink beer to get drunk, dont really care what it taste like, they all taste better after the first one anyway

So what you're saying is there's no problem so tax cuts for the rich!!!

Did I read the same article?

"Despite the volume decline, profitability in Europe improved thanks to the roll-out of premium brands with higher profit margins.

"The Russian market declined by an estimated eight percent due to outlet restrictions and slower economic growth," the group said.

Beer sales in Russia have been hit by a slower economy and government efforts to battle the country's drink problem, which have included a ban on sales in kiosks and on late night sales, as well as marketing restrictions."

So it's not just economic slowdown, it's also government restrictions.  And the slowdown is largely due to Russia as other Europeans seem to be swapping out their cheap swill for premium beer instead.

As I've gotten older I've been drinking more liquor (whisky, bourbon, scotch) and less beer. I enjoy the taste and I feel less bloated and crappy the next day

Yep...there are about 6 breweries within a 20 minute drive and one place that is a 10 minute walk for me.

Home-brewing seems to be getting a lot bigger too.

The Craft Beer market in Texas is booming.

So yeah, a pic of subby seems apropos.

In the real world, I suspect that beer sales are often in an inverse correlation with disposable income. Sure, if you deciding whether to eat or buy beer most folks will choose food (although I've known plenty who went the other way). However, if you can't afford to go out and do anything, sitting at home and drowning your despair and anxiety in the blessed golden elixir is a pretty popular choice.

/Of course I am from Wisconsin, so it may be a regional thing.

Meh.  Ye olde capitalism at work; now appearing in former Marxist economies.  Brand name recognition drives consumer demand, so you can now buy beer plants in China to bottle your swill, with your label slapped on.

/Did I say "label?" Black Label?  Hey, Mable?

When I lived in Colorado if try to make it to any beerfest I could. Really miss that. Now living in Minnesota and try to make it over to New Ulm for Bachfest and Octoberfest. You wouldn't think it but those Germanns and their silly clothes and funny music really know how to party.

not possible, the money being concentrated in the hands of like 40 people they should just be investing in beer and creating jerbs, the actual number of consumers be damned!

Carlsberg and Stella Artois are proof that Europeans are capable of making beer every bit as shiatty as the worst American swill.

Came here to say this. Although this is my opinion in general regarding pilsners. Maybe some of you farkers can recommend me a good one?

I've always found it amusing that I was a typically Bud Light drinker. I sobered up in 2010. Since then? Bud has been consistently losing market share.

Therefore I was single handedly propping up their product line. I'm awesome.

I typically don't care for Pilsners but there's a time and place. Pilsner Urquell is pretty good. Just make sure if you buy bottles to get them in a 12 pack that hasnt seen the light of day. I like Okocim occasionally.

If it's all the same to you, I'd rather not see any of them at all. While we're at it, why the hell do so many people in Ireland drink Tiger and who the hell bothered to ship that pisswater out of Asia?

This, dammit.  Hell, even in TFA Carlsburg said they were seeing higher profits from their "premium" stuff (which probably is still shiatty).  But the point is, that people are drinking better beer, and THAT is the big change in the market.

Ugh, I don't know, but if I have one more person tell me "ehh, Tsing Tao isn't that bad" I might just scream.

Yes it's beer, and yes it's better than baijiu, but it still sucks.

Yes, there are some thing the masses are good for.
Buying stuff in volume.

Because no matter how rich you are...there's still only so much beer you can drink.
Even if you have the biggest balls...

The last few years I have drank more beer than ever, and I haven't bought a single can or bottle from a store.

Did I just blow your mind?  Well then you're stupid.  I've been making my own beer.  I am the only person who started doing that lately so it should have no effect on beer makers.

I can imagine that after a hard day earning $1.96 that those Asians must be dying for a beer to blot out the pain.

2014-02-19 04:27:42 PM
partly my fault.  since 2008, I've been on numerous glaucoma meds that contraindicate against alcohol, especially the pill that has a lovely diuretic effect.  now, if weed were legal, I'd be zonked and thirsty and drinking plenty of beer.  So that's another reason why we need to legalize weed, to save the beer production and thus, the economy.
