Double Jeopardy question: Do any of us know anyone in the black community that actually celebrates Black History Month? By my experience, most truly black people celebrate it every day with pride.

You can find a reason to be offended by literally anything.

GDubDub: Seriously though, if they had all black contestants, being black-history month, would anyone have been surprised if a category called "Country Clubs and Yachting" was avoided?

Don't forget "Parenting"

Itstoearly: How cute, manufactured outrage.  You'd think this is the first time in history a jeopardy category was untouched until it was the only category left.

Don't you know...Ya have to take any opportunity to advance your special interest!!

It happens all the time on the show. A catagory gets picked last! Get over it!

djwebb1127: In fairness, there was a black girl contestant named Kanesha from Oakwood University. Unfortunately she was competing against a WASPY Canadian girl from Harvard and an Asian math major from Berkeley. I was pulling for her but it was hopeless.

You sound like you have a "friend" who is black too, right?

2014-02-19 10:51:41 AM

cgraves67: And they're all thinking, "Man, I guess I should have taken those African-American Studies courses. Who would have thought that would come back to bite me in the ass."

From the headline I was expecting them to bomb more than they had, and was far more disappointed in them not knowing Carl Lewis from an earlier category than the couple they missed from the last one.  The film category also showed they knew more about Europeans than South Americans, it's not like they were even asking for the name of the city with the giant statue of Jesus looking over it, just the country.
All in all, they each seemed to just go down a category, and they weren't just picking the easy ones first, they were picking what they were figuring to know more about than the others.

That all said, the entire time I couldn't help but still miss Trebek's mustache.

Arkanaut: idesofmarch: So forgive me if I'm behind the times, but what happened to Arthur Chu, the guy who put Jeopardy into the headlines a couple weeks ago?  Did he lose or something?

They put the regular contestants on hold for the tournament.  I think he's still the reigning winner, but they won't show his episodes until probably next week or something.

Gracias!

Mid_mo_mad_man: It's not black history or white history it's just history. Enough with this pc garbage.

Really? No one ever says this kind of thing about other topics. No one ever says, "it's not medieval history or non-medieval history. It's just history." So do you see how your line gives off an "I don't want to hear about black people" vibe? How it may be construed as (dare I say it) just a tad racist?

Of course, you might be saying Jeopardy should be a big board of random answers with no categories at all... "There are no potent potables or non-potent potables. Just potables."

Years ago, they had a Hall and Oates category. The contestants cleared the rest of the board before going there and then missed the first four answers. They "ran out of time" before the last answer, but I swear the producers just wanted to get it over with.

It's not racist to not mention blacks if they weren't the ones making history. Let's face facts white men were the power players in Europe and the USA. Black history month reeks of revisionism.

styckx: Wow.. The headline doesn't do that any justice.. I thought maybe it was going to embellish it a bit.. Nope.. They seriously just avoided the entire category.

Wow..   you're correct.  they avoided the far right category about African-American history in the second round. almost like in the first round, where they avoided- U.S. EH!. but, of course there is no manufactured rage for that on now is there.  this just proves that people who are looking to be offended, will always be offended.

As a history instructor at one of the three colleges represented in that episode, I feel at least a little responsible.

Does outrage have to be a national sport in this country?  Everybody has got to be outraged about something.

I was in a book store, back when they existed, and a black couple was giving a employee grief about the Black History book selection not being up in the front of the store, but tucked away in back.  And that was true. It was in back, along with all the other history books, in the farking History section.

2014-02-19 11:19:18 AM
Does anyone know what the questions were?  I'm really curious.

2014-02-19 11:20:19 AM
How could white people possibly know any answers in that category? African Americans have a completely different cultural and life experience than they do, something they cannot possibly understand.

Mid_mo_mad_man:

Well, yea, except it is. The life of a slave on a southern plantation in 1820 South Carolina is "black history" because it specifically happened to "black people".

You're not smarter or more cultured than everyone else and you're not on to anything here. It's race-based history because it's a period of history based on race. That's what happens when you live in a country that systematizes treatment of a group of people based on their race. The history itself matches the systematization and specific periods and events can be tied directly to the race of the affected people.

But, by all means, keep pretending you've transcended everyone else on this matter if it makes you feel better about yourself.

Itstoearly: How cute, manufactured outrage.  You'd think this is the first time in history a jeopardy category was untouched until it was the only category left.

Exactly.  I wonder if I'd be called an uncultured illiterate if I avoided a category on Renaissance literature.  I really only watch Jeopardy if I'm stuck in a doctor's office somewhere, but there's always one category left over.  This isn't some crazy conspiracy.  People like the outraged Jezzies are why people have a hard time taking legitimate outrage seriously.

Anyway, they did pretty well.  The question about the first black regiment was really hard, IMO.  I've never heard that, ever, and it was given has the second easiest.  I probably would have had the Scottsboro Boys but it's been a while.  The others are good, common knowledge any college student should know and they got them.  Although an MLK question is kind of a gimme.

Aka, the ones who actually do embrace their culture for their accomplishments and history. The ones who listen to Billy Holiday and KRS One versus the ones who think 2 Chains is actual hip hop. AKA, the black people who actually do good despite the hardships despite the knuckleheads who do everything to form the stereotypes.

Considering 95% of my friends are black, and 10 years in Southside Chicago, I have some general idea on the whole thing.
