this.

and all out-of-work welders.

Have these cities considered using the sun to melt the snow.  Down here in Florida we never have piles of snow because we have a lot of sun.  Have these people who are so stupid that they live where it snows all the time ever considered using a lot of sun to melt their snow?  What a bunch of tards.

The cities are just doing what the people want. Everytime a plow fills in a driveway or a recently shoveled walk, the home owner tells them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

We'd love to but some states (and I don't want to name names) hog all the sun. We, as a nation, have to go out of our way to schedule a huge chunk of our year just to save some daylight for when certain states blackball the rest of us. Ought to call themselves the Selfish Dickholes State instead of the Sunshine State.

Meh, it's melting now. Floods should start by the end of the week.

A 3 foot pile across my driveway seems to be where my city stores its snow.

It's only mid February and they're running out of room.  What are they going to with all that snow come July?

They should just do what large cities have done for decades. Just load it onto train cars and dump it 10 or 20 miles out of town along the side of the tracks. It's always been pretty efficient at quickly getting the snow out of town.

2014-02-19 09:44:50 AM
Last place I lived before moving here just dumped it all into the river.

2014-02-19 09:46:18 AM
Ship it to California. Why not? Out here in " the west" we are looking at running out of water by mid July. Send a bunch of tankers, load up all the snow, bring it back and dump it in reservoirs. Win win!

Just make more handicapped parking zones.

New York City dumps it into the Hudson...been that way since forever.  It also provides wonderful gifts for people who live in coastal communities down south.  In a few weeks the used condoms, hypodermic needles and empty PBR cans should be washing up.  Enjoy.

The Quad-Cities reached a record 53.3 inches of snow for the season

That's it? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Southern problems.

Or do the GA thing and pile it on handicap spots.

And with interspersed warm days and rain, lots of these piles of snow are now icebergs. Even with sun they can take a week or more to melt

I wonder if these snow piles could be contained so the meltwater ran off through a trash grate into a basin, and the resulting water evaporated over the course of the summer, would they be able to reclaim some of the salt? Or at least minimize the salt entering the waterways? I'm guessing there's probably a good reason why not.

This is a problem in West Michigan. The lakes need the water but the rivers are going to flood into towns before it reaches the beach. How many trucks would it take to transport the heaviest snow fall in 30 years in GR?

We are going to flood worse than last year based on all the snow laying around.

Maybe they should start trucking it out to California and other parts West, COD. It's their snow, after all. Let them worry about where to put it.

Have you seen the before and after photos of California's Winter snow cover, last year versus this year? Pretty scary stuff.

This. Apparently CA could use the moisture (and we could use a little of it here, too, in Texas).

I haven't read all of the responses so excuse me if this has been mentioned. Why don't they truck/take it to a landfill?

Sell it to California they really need it now.

I remember in 2010 when the DC area was hit by those 3 storms in about a month an a half. They piled the snow up in every park and dumped a lot in the river. The building I was working at the time only had 2 out of 6 floors occupied so they piled all this snow in the back parking lot. It dwarfed the 3 story parking garage next to it. I think I have pictures somewhere.

Chicago has used the beaches along Lake Michigan as dumps for snow during heavy snow years.  This year doesn't count.

Catapults and trebuchets. There's nothing that breaks up the monotony of a northern winter like a medieval siege.

WINTER IS HERE!

2014-02-19 10:13:34 PM
There are trucks that can go on site and are melting machines. Dump the snow in, water comes out, drain it to the storm sewer. Presumably propane-fueled. Obviously comes at a price, but you do what you have to do if it's actually a problem. I've seen them in mall parking lots in past winters.
