My first reaction was "this is going to bomb."  Then my fiance said "green lantern."

Marvel, your ride is over!

Huh... not what I was expecting

2014-02-19 08:25:35 AM
Awesome. I love that we're getting a big-budget version of such a weird and goofy sci-fi comic.

2014-02-19 08:26:51 AM
Actually that looks like it might have some promise.  And I usually hate comic movies.

Green Lantern made the bigger sin of being bland and boring. Ryan Reynolds is good in the indie stuff he does, but neither he or Blake Lively could act their way out of a paper bag in that one.

Doesn't help that the movie had the complete wrong tone to it.  GL should have been training day in space, with a more recognized villain.  Instead, they tried to make a comedy, with one of the biggest bads in GL history pared with a rather bland one.

As for GotG?  Looks fine.  Trailer serves to introduce the characters, and hint at the action.  Loved what I saw thusfar, and can't wait to see the movie proper.

You can't have watched the trailer and really thought "Terrible Music".  That last part with Phil butchering his own song and the Guardians in the line-up looking bored...perfect!

Trailer has pacing issues, but it also has a raccoon with a machine gun.

2014-02-19 08:37:17 AM
Saw this a few hours ago and didn't find it particularly funny and I'm pretty sure it was trying to be funny.

It makes me wonder what genre and demo the movie is (comedy? action? kids?)

I'm guessing that it's not a flat out comedy, otherwise that'd be a pretty shiat trailer to put together.

I'm willing to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt here, but to be honest, on the "strength" of that trailer I'm not rushing out to see this and I'll probably give it an entire pass unless it gets some good word of mouth.

It also has the most menacing version of "Hooked on a Feeling" I've ever heard. Which definitely made me giggle.

A raccoon with machine guns is ridiculous.  Now if I could just figure out this Wonder Woman plot I would have an alternative for you...

Um. Galactic guardians introduced by Blue Swede? REALLY??!?

It was tough enough swallowing this. But Hooked On A Feeling?? This is gonna be bad. I'll hope against hope, but I did not expect this after that teaser they threw out there earlier.

The internet is almost entirely populated by cynical assholes.

Yeah, this is either going to be Epic, or an Epic Fail.

So far Marvel has not shown me anything in the Epic Fail catagory...so I am going for Epic.

After rewatching it paying attention to the music I think it fits perfectly.  I can see Star Lord's walkman playing that album....on cassette...with '80s vintage orange ear pad headphones and built in antenna.

/I think I had some of those...definately had that album on casette

Yeah, I'm curious, too. After all, there is no precedent whatsoever for Marvel making a superhero action movie with comedic moments that is accessible to adults and children alike. I'm worried.

Couldn't disagree more. Pratt is going to carry this movie and come out the other side as one of the biggest Hollywood stars today. You watch...this time next year, all anyone is going to be talking about is what movies Pratt is up for.

I am all aboard this hype train.  I think it looks great.  It was nice to get a trailer that didn't give away any plot, but just served to familiarize the audience with the characters/universe.

Saw the trailer - honestly didn't know how to feel about it.

It did set the tone for the whole "band of misfits" thing, and I think that the portrayal of Star-Lord is pretty good.

But it didn't give any inclination as to plot at all.

I need to know at very least why 5 of the most ridiculous characters ever are hanging out.  Just a little.  Anything??

Other than Rocket and Groot there was no reasonable link between the 5 characters.

His star is on the rise and he'll have no shortage of work, but you can't assume A-list status outside of the franchise, particularly since it hasn't materialized yet Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.

I really think this was smart for a first trailer.  As we get closer to the movie release they can put out another one that explores the plot a bit more.  But for now, it did a nice job introducing the characters that 99% of non comic readers don't know

I think a lot of the hate on the music is not understanding that Star Lord was taken from Earth in the 80's i believe. So the music and the cassette Walkman make sense. Does Marvel have to push out some more backstory so people get this, probably. But they have a big track record of kicking ass with movies so I'll go

as someone unfamiliar with the characters who is she playing and where in the trailer is she?  The only none GotG character I recognized in the trailer was The Collector because Del Toros face is easy to spot.  I asked my friend about John C Reilly and the guy from Blood Diamond/Gladiator already. Anyone know who that character is that calls them all a-holes?  Is he important?

To be honest, I don't really need that in the trailer. The trailer presented it as a fun, action comedy and thats what I want in the summer.  My wife will go with me to see it because she enjoys the Marvel movies even though neither of us really have read comic books.

/I am getting a Fifth Element type vibe with this movie in terms of comedy/action mixture, leaning more towards the comedy side.

I'm going to see this movie, and I think the trailer is ok - I would have just like to have seen a little more of a link between the individuals.  Plot wasn't even necessary.  But the trailer only had Star-Lord with a couple lines, and no other two characters really interacted together at all.

It was just weird for me.  I'm still going to see this movie.

Have I mentioned I'm going to see this movie?

I know, but I think this is going to be huge, both the movie and for Pratt. It just seems like this movie, with Pratt as the lead, is going to "work"...it seems like a natural fit.

And if the movie is a hit, every screen writer with a rom-com or buddy action movie west of Denver is going to be erasing whatever name they had and penciling in Chris Pratt.

without giving away larger plot points, Gillan will play a villain, Nebula.  Think of her in the space pirate/mercenary vein.

As to the 'a-holes' guy, doesn't have a major role.  But he is Peter Serafinowicz, British comedic actor.  You may recognize him as Shaun and Ed's roommate, Pete, from 'Shaun of the Dead'

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team-the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand-with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

I will accept your apology in the spirit in which it was intended and offer one back.  :)

Usually people use "benefit of the boubt" to indicate that they will be positive about something eventhough they have had bad experiences with a similar something in the past...it would seem to me that you are doing the opposite.  If I am mistaken, then see above...

I think that handjobs all around is a little bit extreme, but I will willingly give them the cost of a ticket* for myself and my wife (maybe even some of the kids too).  Once out of my posession I really have no say on how they spend said money...

The trailer looks amazing.

I'm actually proud Disney has the balls to back this after the John Carter debacle, but I'm so happy they did.

For the naysayers just imagine the misfit Avengers in space meets the Fifth Element. The movie will be glorious. I'm going to laugh when every kid wants a Rocket Raccoon for Christmas.

At first I was a little underwhelmeed, probabaly due to the fact that the second half is what was leaked earlier. Then I also realized that this was supposed to be an intro to these characters for most of the world.
Hell, only four characters actually spoke in this whole trailer, and one of them was a member of the team. I have faith in this film, and the dynamics that are sure to come from them.

Also, for once, kinda happy we don't have a major amount of spoilage in a trailer. I may actually actively avoid any further ones just to go in as fresh as possible.
