Tim Roth would have been better as Remus Lupin against Gary Oldman's Sirius Black. Carter is still a better choice than Swinton for LeStrange. I only wish her costume and hair had been different. Less disheveled. Yeah, she's a mess in the books but that hair was so distracting in the movie. I kept on wanting to dunk her head in a bucket of detangler.

yes, I think it's about time to reboot Harry Potter.

I thought the casting was pretty much spot on for the most part, especially for the kids since you're stuck with them through puberty for better or worse (sorry, actress who played Ginny).  The one thing that did bother me a bit was how old they made Harry's parents and their contemporaries.  The Potters were killed when they were 21, which means everyone in their class, like Sirius Black or Snape would've been just touching 40 by the end of the seventh book.  They would've lost some acting chops, but I thought they should've skewed younger than Oldman and Rickman for those parts.  And it was ridiculous how old the Potters looked in pictures and ghost form considering how young they were when they died.

I'd bet money that it wasn't a "toss-up" for Snape, but rather than Tim Roth was the backup in case Rickman said no.  As it turns out, Rickman initially was going to say no, and only accepted the role once he realized his children (who were at the age they were reading the books) would never have forgiven him,

I'm pretty sure Rowlings has said that she based Snape off of Rickman while she was writings.

I've heard that Roth was a consideration.  While Rickman was obviously outstanding, I think that Roth would have done a great job.  Roth is a constantly and consistently underrated actor.

I never thought of that, but I agree to a point.  Roth would've been brilliant, but only if they hadn't underutilized Lupin the way they did.  Of course, I think Thewlis is more than capable in that regard as well.

Roth would've been good as Snape too, had they let the character be as nasty as he was in the books.  I love Rickman, but it seriously felt like they had him on a leash and kept him subdued.  Maybe they were afraid he'd steal the show.

Swinton could've pulled off Trelawney, but Emma was too perfect.

I dunno, some of the casting choices or lack of making actors up to look more like their counterpart on the page kinda got on my nerves.

I don't think ANYONE could do better at Trelawney than Emma Thompson. I knew from the trailer that it was a perfect casting. And I also thought Carter was a great Bellatrix.

In fact, the only casting decision in the whole series of 7 movies I didn't like was David Thewlis for Lupin. (I didn't care for Gambon's portrayal of his Dumbledore, but I wouldn't say he was poorly cast).

A darker, grittier Harry Potter.

If I go back in time and re-cast Dumbledore, I'd choose Peter O'Toole. He would of done a great job and he lived long enough to complete the series.

This!  O'toole and Harris used to switch roles with each other all the time in their younger days (and bop out for drinks between acts)

Nobody ever robs boarding schools. Why not? Wand shops. Bank vaults. You get turned into a tadpole sticking them up. Boarding schools, on the other hand, you catch 'em with their shirts untucked.

I suspect that article gave me the wrong sort of takeaway on precisely what kind of "special tutoring" goes on at Hogwart's.

Sir. Ian McKellen was once thought in the running to play Hogwarts' headmaster, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. He was, in fact, offered the role after original Dumbledore actor, Richard Harris, passed away just after filming the first Harry Potter film.

So was that a CGI Richard Harris in Chamber of Secrets? Because Gambon didn't join the cast until the third film.

Roth was actually the first choice to play Snape.  However, he was offered the part at the same time he was offered the role of the fascist chimp in Tim Burton's "re-imagining" of Planet of the Apes and opted for it instead.

Also, the main reason Peter O' Toole didn't take over for Richard Harris as Dumbledore was because the studio thought his health was too poor.

It was actually Harris that wasn't going to take the role --  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001321/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

Only agreed to take the part of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) after his then 11-year-old granddaughter threatened never to speak to him again if he didn't.

On Rickman's bio page:
Despite being author J.K. Rowling's first choice to play Snape in the Harry Potter films (she actually envisioned him when writing the character), he was only given the role inHarry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) after Tim Roth (the studio's preferred choice) backed out to star in Planet of the Apes (2001).
