OgreMagi: A friend of mine is a popular Blues guitarist/singer. Signing boobs used to be a fun thing, but when some woman showed up at a show and showed how she had his signature tattooed on, he stopped the practice.

THAT is creepy.

buntz: What I think is interesting is I've never heard of them.

Not a dig at them by any means, but the article calls them "near-legendary" and I've literally never heard the words "Rocket From The Crypt" before today.

Again, more my own "Out of touch-ness" than anything, I guess? (Though I've at least heard of a lot of bands that I don't listen to)

Almost word for word what I was going to say. I would think being a household name in at least a few households would be required for legendary status.

Elvis, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, even the Ramones...all legendary. This band? not so much.

I was living in San Diego in '91 and I don't recall hearing of them.

And I frequented larger rooms like the Belly Up Tavern in Salona Beach.  Saw groups like the Bonedaddys there.

And I do recall seeing Dr. Chico's Island Sounds many many times....before the leader of the group was sent to prison as the Pacific Beach Rapist.

No band/venue is gonna hold spots for free tickets when they can sell them. That is how tickets get released on sold out shows when the band releases tickets they had the venue hold for their use.

That's kind of funny - but eh, it's a permanent joke, why do that to yourself, especially since a lot of people probably wouldn't believe you and think you really meant to get faith or hope or some inspirational shiat in a language you don't even understand?

2014-02-19 09:14:28 AM
I know someone who has a tattoo of the band logo - she has a sort of "bracelet" of the rockets around her ankle and has for some time. She's less than pleased by this. In a way, I see how they are powerless here (though they could just buy the tickets as someone else mentioned) but that's why you don't make lifetime guarantees you don't entirely 100% have control over.

I understand enough Japanese and Japanese culture to deal with that.

It's the first part that's prevented me.

Apologies - I didn't know that. :)

I dated someone who was from Japan and he LOVED reading "Japanese" tattoos.

But it means ECONOMIC depression only.

Such a nuanced language, you better be goddamned sure of what you're getting if you go that route.

It's not as nuanced as you'd think. It just seems that way once it's translated. Actually the language is quite direct in many ways. Much moreso than English. But at the same time, it's polite to leave many things unsaid. So it's really the speaker who is making it nuanced, not the language.

Kanji have a meaning. Each character is what it is. Once you know it, it's not so mysterious. cow 牛meat 肉beef 牛肉 (cow meat). Stupid easy.

不 negation, not, bad
景view, scene, outlook
気 energy, feeling

不景気 negative outlook feeling, ie a bad outlook. It's not subtle at all.

The BAND should take care of it - rider, deduct from their pay. Those people supported them when they were small and your word is your bond.
Don't think anyone (well, maybe a few crazies) would now get tatooed just to go to a show.

I read the original WSJ article. The one thing I took away from it is that's where they got the idea at Melt in Cleveland to give you a discount if you had a sandwich tattoo.

Why is it creepy?  I hate all tattoos, and I think autographs are kind of dumb, but that seems like a cool and reasonable thing to do if you're a fan of someone and they freely gave you tIheir autograph there.

Bullsharts.  It's the fault of the band for not keeping their word.  Blaming it on the venue is like a store owner blaming the seasonal temp door greeter for the new stop and frisk policy.

To me, that type of idolization, or whatever you want to call it, is disturbing.

Seeing them next week boo yah!

Met John Reis and he was a total gentleman

He used to have an awesome radio show. The guy can put pretty much any hipster to shame with the "You've never heard of the stuff I like" attitude. Some of it so obscure you can't even find it on the internet. But instead of being a hipster douche, he shared it with the world.

Oh, well. A couple of my friends got Black Flag tattoos years ago. The band then proceeded to become progressively lamer and lamer. Try getting that crap covered up. Also, what is it with band names? We seem to be out of them. They increasingly get recycled. There was already a Rocket From the Tombs, which fractured into Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys. Oh, and RTFC sucks.

doglover: ongbok: doglover: ongbok: Back in the late 90's there was this "celebrity" tattoo artist in Chicago. He would do a night each month at this club where he would do free tattoos of his logo to anybody that wanted one. There would be a line a mile long of idiots lining up to get this guy's logo tattooed on them. Never could understand that. I always wondered if he had a partnership with a tattoo removal specialist because you after a few days when those people realize what they had done, the regret had to start setting in, and he could point them to his guy to get it removed.

People don't regret tattoos nearly as much as you'd think.

Would you regret getting a unoriginal logo tattooed on you? I'm not talking about something people think is original and they thought up.

What? Can't parse that last statement. I'll try:

Depends on the image. As it is, I have a pin up style girl on my arm. Always wanted one. Now, pin up girls are unoriginal, but this one's also unique in that it's on my arm, no one else's.

If the picture is cool, that's fine if 10,000,000 have the same thing. It's still cool. Yakuza tats, for example, all very similar, yet awesome. But if it's a bad picture? Nah. That's crap, even if it's unique.

No the tattoo is incredibly lame and most people regret their tattoos, I'm debating covering mine up or removal as are most of my friends who got theirs when they were in their 20s.

You have a tattoo on your arm of a picture most people relegate to a place of honor in their basement bar. Congratulations.

Billy Liar: Passive Aggressive Larry: Even after reading the article, I can't figure out if this band is underground enough to be cool or old enough to be lame. Quick, someone find a youth and ask them what I'm supposed to think.

I'm not a youth, but stealing most of your band's name from a legendary (albeit lesser-known) band has rarely been cool.  "Wow, "Rocket From the Tombs" is a pretty cool name.  Let's call ourselves "Rocket From the.......how 'bout 'Crypt'?  Y'think anyone'll notice?"  That's all.  I'm gonna go listen to this guy that makes his own guitars and calls himself Bo Dudley.

wow, and for a few second I thought RFTT was looking damn good for their age. Yeah sorry, nothing legendary about being another almost famous 90s band.
