Without getting into who's right and wrong; I sympathize with the protesters. If I were in a position do decide between Putin's Russia and the European Union I'd already have the EU flag up. On one hand you have a collection of prosperous first-world countries that may be going through a tough time right now and on the other is a depressed and corrupted heart of a former superpower.

Not to mention the decades of repression the Eastern Bloc countries faced and surely their parents remember. While that may be a government long gone, the memory persists.

To maximize the number of people in the world who could understand the words.  English is becoming the de facto international language.  More people speak a dialect of Chinese as a first language, but there is no more popular second language in the world.

Didn't know this either until corrected by a Ukrainian, she was pretty adamant about us Americans dropping the "The".  I explained it to here it just kind of rolls off the tongue in English to add "the" kind of like The United States...or something.

God I loved the tshirts in China.  It was all the rage to have English writing on your shirt.  Coca-cola, Nike, whatever.  However, the cheaper ones didn't have rights and didn't really care.  So they'd put Cow and Grocery Store on the shirts and sell it to the hip kids.

Cool thanks.  I couldn't find anything definitive and this is quite an interesting direction the protests have taken.  I just didn't know what exactly was on fire at this point :P

The largest city in the US, New York City, including all the rough parts like Hunts Point, had 332 murders for the entire year of 2013. 9 in a day, just in a single event, is a lot, even for someplace like Houston.

This isn't even a war, either, it's just a protest.

They offered the protest leaders seats in the government.

Each day the protests continue is costing the Ukraine government not just in terms of money, but international legitimacy. If you think this isn't harming the Ukrainian political establishment in a big way you're fooling yourself.

Yes, they are tearing up the little tent like structures, no idea who put them up, im guessing its not them. And yes, came here to say it looks like leaf cutter ants. My guess is as long as they stand there playing music and chanting and whatever, the military wont move it. But...you never know. They might just get tired of the bullshiat and wade in with wooden shampoos and rubber bullets and sting ball grenades. Time will tell. They look pretty contained now, but im guessing the tards in the crowd will soon taunt the dynamite monkeys and all hell will break loose.

rcf1105: Didn't Ukraine have a revolution about 10 years ago?

I wonder what happened in the meantime.

Shenanigans. Lots and lots of shenanigans. The current revolutionaries are on the same side as the previous revolutionaries; there was an elected change of power in 2010 to the pre-revolutionary ruling faction because the revolutionaries weren't able to quickly fix the results of 70 years of Soviet oppression and more than a decade of post-Soviet corruption. The current rulers are just as pro-Soviet and corrupt as they were before the 2004 revolution, hence the current re-ignition of said revolution. It doesn't help that they tried the opposition leader for corruption and imprisoned her.

It's not just good guys vs. bad guys; there's a big ethnic divide in Ukraine between ethnic Russians descended from people relocated there by Stalin, and ethnic Ukrainians. The Russian-speakers who tend to support the government are more pro-Russia, obviously, while the more revolution-favoring Ukrainian-speakers (it's a dialect very close to Russian) are more pro-EU and want to join NATO. And there's a bunch of other politics involved in forming the two sides. Suffice to say, the current government was elected in 2010 with a plurality, in a relatively fair vote, but the opposition thinks they've abused their mandate to the point where waiting until the 2015 elections is not an option.

You should read up on what all went on. There was dioxin poisoning of the opposition coalition leader and former President, for instance.

rkiller1: I mean the lasers are cool and all, but what are the protesters' goals?  Anyone know what they want?  Freedom? Economic redistribution? Cake?

Snap elections, I think, and the resignation of the government and President. They're due for national elections next year, but they're so het up about the government's stampede toward the Russians and away from the EU that they don't want to wait. The current president got 48 percent of the vote, so it's not like he has a mandate to do all the radical economic and political restructuring he's been up to (basically, dismantling the Orange Revolution changes).

So basically, the rioters are Gore voters, only not as anesthetized by TV.

It's kind of a proxy war between the west and Russia.  The Ukrainians were hoping for closer ties to the west, and the current government ignored that and signed a customs agreement with Russia instead.  The west wants to get greater influence with Ukraine in order to curb Russian influence, and Russia sees that the Ukrainian border is only three hundred miles from Moscow, which would be kind of an existential threat in case that country decided they weren't quite friends any more.

The rioting starts from the western-leaning population, and I'm assuming all sides are mucking around in there.

Chicago does not have an extremely high murder rate. It had a statistical spike in 2012, but it still wasn't a high rate compared to REALLY dangerous towns like Detroit, Memphis and New Orleans. Chicago's rate is about 18 per 100k, vs. 54 per 100k in Detroit. All that Murder Capital BS was just because Chicago has a very large population inside the city limits, and thus had a big raw number. As an aside, all those people who talk about the 2d amendment not being a deterrent to tyranny, think of these protest where they don't have guns and still mange to get the attention of the government.

I hope they're not armed.  If they are, the body count would be a lot higher than 9, and it'd be very, very one-sided.

So, defending with rocks is better than defending with guns?  I beg to differ. What did we learn last week when Venezuela went up in flames?

Yes.  Because throwing rocks and lighting fires usually doesn't get you shot.  It might get you beat, but probably not shot.

Since the clever and funny replies are already take, I'll go with the serious one.   It's "rein in" because it's making an analogy with the reins one uses to control a horse.

The government is showing remarkable restraint. If they use guns, the government is much less inclined to continue showing restraint and will use guns back. Then it devolves into guerrilla warfare. Think Libya without the benefit of Western air power because the Russians would go all NIMBY about it.

If you follow the link on the image itself,  http://www.ukrstream.tv/, it shows both that video of cleanup operations and the current scene we're expecting.

Gore voters? they are trying to get away from an overly large oppressive gov't, not closer to one.

The unrest intensified after an anti-protest law went into effect. Throngs of demonstrators took to the streets to protest the law.

Let's remember that Ukraine outlawed protests.  The right to protest is a pretty basic and fundamental right for a democracy.  The current president/ prime minister whatever they call it over there supported this law that outlawed protests.  So you see where he is, politically.

Yes, there are privately owned firearms in the Ukraine. Supposedly regulated. However, when I visited, I know of a lot of Ukrainians who don't really give a crap what the law says and bribery is fairly routine when dealing with the police. If you want a gun, you can get one. I think prostitution is illegal there as well, but hookers are always sitting in the westernized hotels when you walk in. (surprising they were good looking, but yeah, not looking to get an STD)

Coming to a city near you.  Anyone looked at the price of meat & fresh produce lately?

Seven bucks for a pound of bacon?  $4.00 a gallon for home heating oil?

Let's see:

Failed political class full of self important oligarchs hell bent on squeezing the working class.

A government that spies on it's citizens, trusts no one, and "renders" political prisoners to foreign countries.

An un winnable land war in Asia (Afghanistan) that sucks billions and billions out of the economy.

Stagnant wages, diminishing standard of living, tyrannical leaders who do "whatever they want".

Sounds like the fall of a superpower to me.  Yep.  Everyone stand for the Soviet Anthem.  We're living it 23 years later.

I hope they're not armed.  If they are, the body count would be a lot higher than 9, and it'd be very, very one-sided.

So, defending with rocks is better than defending with guns?  I beg to differ. What did we learn last week when Venezuela went up in flames?

We learned that if you are a government official, don't let it get to the point of a toilet paper shortage. That's never tolerated. Also, Venezuelan women can be dangerous when they're pissed off.

mbillips: rcf1105: Didn't Ukraine have a revolution about 10 years ago?

Yet another reason to be thankful to have be born in North America.

If you're Russian, yes.
If you're Ukrainian, no.

When you use the definite article, it essentially means "The borderlands". When you don't, it means something more akin to "the principality". To Russians, it's a borderland. To Ukrainians, it's a principality.

The Irresponsible Captain: Without getting into who's right and wrong; I sympathize with the protesters.

Ukraine isn't elligeble for EU membership. It was a tradeagreement that was on the table, which Russia felt would flood the Russian market with made in EU goods, which Russian made products couldn't compete with (I don't know whether Putin felt it was because Russian stuff is crap, expensive or perhaps both).

EU has whethered the crisis fine btw., there's real BNP growth now, on average. Which is to say some nations, ie. the usual suspects, are still not doing so well. The EU as a whole is doing just fine though.

And wouldn't mind having Ukraines market open for its products, + Ukraine has tons of raw materials the EU would be interested in importing. They will however not be propped up like Greece, since they wouldn't be an EU member. That was what Russia was willing to do. Sell them cheap gas, and keep lending them money even though they're deadbeats.

Even under private health insurance, the average policy holder receives much less in services than they pay in premiums. That's the only way insurance CAN work. So yes, in most people's experiences you are indeed footing the bill for somebody else.

The goal should be to minimize administrative expenses and fraud. Medicare and Medicaid are actually exceptionally good at the former, less so at the latter, but not enough to offset the administrative savings.

Fifteen years ago I worked for a physician billing company here in MA. We had two people handling just BCBS, a single commercial carrier. We had dozens more handling the rest. Meanwhile, the little old lady who processed both Medicare and Medicaid claims spent half her day sipping tea. Christ, we could have run that company on six people if there was single payor.

Depends what people you're talking about. Some of those with Russian ethnicity living in Ukraine want things to stay the way they are. This keeps them tied to how things were.

/True, you can't make everyone happy, but there seems to be tens of thousands out there now. I hope they don't charge the military. True, they have numbers, but the military has heavy weapons.  And generally, when the cops or military open up, the protesters scatter like quail from a hunting dog. Well..except the dead ones. They don't run so much.

There's often a huge problem with the millitary angle in a non-sectarian conflict. Ukrainian soldiers are indoctrionated to defend the Ukrainian people, telling them to start shooting at Ukrainians might not work at all.

Remember the 1991 coup in the Soviet Union, where an army brigade was ordered to Moscow. When they arrived at the parliament where Jeltsin was holed up, they shook hands with the protesters, and vowed to defend the parliament, and refused to shoot at civilians. At which point the coup failed (and the Soviet Union with it).

The Irresponsible Captain: spawn73: Ukraine isn't elligeble for EU membership.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant to be closer, not to join, and to do so in an enthusiastic manner.

Good to hear the EU is doing better, it's been all Olympics all the time on the national news and I've lost track since the Greek crisis wasn't so loud but I recall the overall EU economy being described as pretty flat at the time.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/08/business/greek-government-forecast s- budget-surplus.html

Well, Greece claims that they might have a budget surplus in 2014 for the first time in 6 years. Who knows. Spain announced it would take them 20 years for their economy to have regained the pre-crisis levels. Which, whilst depressing, is still good in a way.

Northern Europe, ie. Benelux, Germany, Denmark/Sweden/Finland + the Baltic states is storming ahead though. Germany, last I read, has an export surplus equal to that of China, which is kinda sick when you consider the differences in population.

It is tougher to get media out of there due to government suppression.  Ukraine is relatively free and open media with ready access to the outside world with the worlds media attention a couple hundred miles away.  Venezuela is an isolated outpost being dominated by a single party with strict media controls so the images we get out are difficult to verify.  That and this has white people fighting and dying and Venezuela involves primarily brown people.

There have also been some attacks in Northwest China but we don't hear much about that because it is China.

The growth is obviously uneven, with Southern-Europe not exactly storming ahead, but more seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

But it's not just Fox News, it seems to be universal across American news media that the EUs economy is somehow doing poorly, despite it actually doing good, especially compared to USA and China.

A supposedly left-wing show like the Daily Show, which I watch, always echoes this sentiment as if it was just a factual truth. I wonder what the motive is, well, because socialism, but why doesn't more critical medias pick up on that the EU is actually fine and sound. Greece is seemingly, against all the so called "experts" predictions saved, and still in the EU, and the Euro zone. The Euro is doing just fine as always (look at its strenght vs. the US dollar).

Yet, I bet, it'll all be doom and gloom for the EU for the next 10+ years irregardless.

I didn't want to slap up links from Russian sites (very biased) or from anarchist and leftist sites (very biased), so BBC and Deutsche Welle They're an unreformed, made-over, National Socialist party. They've rebranded, and it's working. They might call themselves "Freedom", but that's not what they're after. And they aren't the most extreme ones, either. Some of the neo-Nazis taking part in  Euromaidan aren't bothering to hide it.

It isn't that everyone or even most of the people who are rising up against the government in Ukraine are some kind of ultranationalists or neo-Nazis. it isn't that at all. But the crowd hasn't exactly kicked them out, either.

"Free" as in nobody is paying for it, or "free" that somebody else is footing the bill, just not you?

See, I can pay into a system that make sure another person doesn't go bankrupt when he gets sick or injured, so that he can keep paying into the same system that makes sure I don't go bankrupt when I get sick or injured.

Or, I can pay into a system that promises that, then reneges because of "pre-existing contidtions".

Or, I can not pay into such a system, and if I'm poor, I'm screwed if I get sick or injured, and if I'm rich, I can praise myself for pulling myself up by my bootstraps.

I can see where such a decision is difficult because of the poors getting that way solely because of bad decisions and in no way due to luck or losing out in the genetic lottery.

Or they're just useful in the current circumstances. I don't think the Orange Revolution was right-wing, they leaned heavily on the socialists and communists. Yushenko and Tymoshenko were possibly bad administrators, though, and I don't see a lot of right-wing influence. If this group of protestors and/or the movement as a whole (generalized) are anything like the makeup of that previous group the ultranationalists and weirdo right-wingers aren't really going to be an issue.

Mostly worry about competence if the protests succeed. I'm not sure  Klitschko is the best solution.

dr_blasto: If this group of protestors and/or the movement as a whole (generalized) are anything like the makeup of that previous group the ultranationalists and weirdo right-wingers aren't really going to be an issue.

I hope not. I'd suspect the weirdo rightwingers are useful muscle to be discarded by the larger movement and the larger opposition parties, like the RNE were in Russia in 1993. Given that issues of national identity and national self-determination are central to the whole Euromaidan movement, though, ultranationalists might gain support that they otherwise wouldn't, especially in the atmosphere of revolution. It might be harder to get rid of them after this.

You've got a good point about competence. Klitschko's charisma, fame, and popularity might be enough to get him elected, but none of those things run a country. Unless he's going to solve Ukraine's problems with Russia by getting in the ring with Putin, I'm not sure he has the necessary skills and experience for the job. If he falls on his face, then what? Then whom?

I wish I knew more about this. I've been living under a rock for several years now ;-)

He might be losing support. The main force being used here are Berkut, an interior "special force". Kyiv police previously refused to support the aggressions, I suspect that is happening now too. Getting the Army involved is dangerous because a large portion of them may not move against their countrymen. In fact, there are rumours that soldiers may be heading to Kyiv to support the protests. There's also an Interior army but these are mostly young kids from poor families. There's about 5000 Berkut that can move against the Maidan, that may not be enough, they've been beaten back a few times. But they will make sure that more blood will be spilled.

Yanukovich has run out of options, nobody can trust him to negotiate anymore. This will end violently, one way or another.

Watching the stream, the attack looks to be starting again, they're calling for help at the barricades.

I think the turning point has happened. Basically, the gov't was to vote to repeal the laws brought in on Dec 16 and begin limiting the powers of the President. It looked like Yanukovich lost some support even in his party and he would lose the vote so he stopped it trying to buy time. Many thanks, most sincererly.

Igor Jakovsky: Looks like the protesters are kicking those fires up a notch and lucky for them the wind is blowing away from them.  Thats a ton of smoke with god knows what in it.

Let's just say every one is gonna ha respiratory problems later and well heat seeking missiles are only god for the barricade.I Which from other videos seems to be tires, pallets, 50 gallon drums filled with trash, cars, trucks, and any thing else that will make a barricade and or burn.

danzak: flexflint: danzak: The main force being used here are Berkut, an interior "special force".

There are Twitter rumors about 22 instead of 9 deaths now.

Entire regiments of soldiers choosing sides (against the government) usually is a turning point. Any support from rural communities?

I think the turning point has happened. Basically, the gov't was to vote to repeal the laws brought in on Dec 16 and begin limiting the powers of the President. It looked like Yanukovich lost some support even in his party and he would lose the vote so he stopped it trying to buy time. Then, when the protesters started to move towards Parliament, all he'll broke loose. People have been shot for Chrissakes, with 22 now being reported killed. Yanukovich has no way out now other than violence, which I think he will lose but with a lot more blood. Whether the army gets involved and start shifting alliances will determine if this turns into a full out civil war. Hard to believe that this is the 2nd largest country in Europe, this is like the wars I spent my Saturday mornings learning about.

Yeah, it's dangerous times in Eastern Europe right now. From the blue pages I read back in the 90's that why we got into Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Oh and don't forget Poland. Well Russia said from the beginning the weren't happy with the missile shield thing and they sure weren't happy with Poland leaving there sphere of influence that's happaning in Ukraine now. So one up thread said the quote "A bad peace is worse than war" it's true and Nato, the US, and the EU still farking with old Soviet client states. Someones gonna get us into a war that no one wins.

/Yes that is my fear.
