Looks like it's going to be a civil war with east/west border along Ukraine/Russian population.  From a couple blurbs it sounds like the military might also be split as one said nope we support the protesters and rumors of 400 airborne OTW to Kiev.

serial_crusher: special20: Panty Sniffer: mbillips: Chicago does not have an extremely high murder rate. It had a statistical spike in 2012, but it still wasn't a high rate compared to REALLY dangerous towns like Detroit, Memphis and New Orleans. Chicago's rate is about 18 per 100k, vs. 54 per 100k in Detroit. All that Murder Capital BS was just because Chicago has a very large population inside the city limits, and thus had a big raw number. Chicago's not ultra SAFE, now, not like New York City (5.1 per 100k), but it's not a war zone, either.

Also avoid neighborhoods like Englewood and Austin.  But that is only common sense.

That's right - we'd all like everyone to stay away from Austin. Please?

Seconded.  Austin was a great town, but all these outsiders moving here are changing it.  Hardly recognizable as the same city it was when I first came here 5 years ago.

I fear for this as well. There have been rumors that the East of the country is also fed up with the ruling class, but those rumors have been few and far between.

It's ok everybody! Joe Biden sent a strongly worded statement!

He was losing support in the East in Dec/January but the protests there have been smaller and beaten back for the most part.  Things may be flaring up again slowly, protests in Kharkiv earlier.  I think the violence there may have even been worse in Dec/Jan because there's less protesters and the cameras are focused on Kiev.  The media is also much more gov't friendly there.

From Ukraine Liveblog update: 1659 GMT: Oleh Lyashko, a Rada (parliament) deputy and the leader of the Radical Party, has just completed a speech on the Maidan stage. Having announced that 40 protesters had died so far (we're not sure that's accurate), he turned to stare into the camera and addressed President Yanukovych:

"Yakunovych, you will end your life like Gadaffi!... Nothing is forgotten, no one is forgiven."

Seems like they are having less problems supplying the water trucks.  I understand this helps douse the flaming barricades, but won't this also create a lot of difficult to pass ice?

Can we PLEASE have more threads and info?  I know this is not as enthralling as my scrotal seam being a labia, but it IS the largest country fully contained in Europe a hair's breadth from revolution....

I greatly appreciate the info you've been giving in this thread.  I'm first generation born here in The States and I speak Kitchen Ukrainian.  I'm willing to try translating whatever I'm able to.
For example, the first feed on that page was just listing the names of children whose parents wish to hear from them.  The rather energetic fellow in the red and white jacket is hyping the crowd by letting them know that these protests are happening across the country from Lviv in the West to Donbass in the East and all Ukrainians are united in their wish for freedom.

My favorite joke about all this is:
Q: how many Austinites does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: 13; 1 to do it, and a dozen more to whine about how much better it was 25 years ago.

Carolus99: Every time I see these protests, everything is on fire. What exactly is being burned? Is that just from where the molotovs hit?

The protestors have (or rather, had) a large supply of car tires. You can see some details of the barricades' layout and construction here (from Jan 27th). Tires everywhere.

That guy's also doing a liveblog and has some updated maps from last night's events here and here that provide perspective on what you're seeing when you look at the livestreams. (Also, a new thread appears to be on its way.)

Flanders government blocks all weapons exports to Ukraine. This will probably be followed by the Walloon government doing the same thing. Can't find a suitable link, this one is in Dutch: https://twitter.com/MP_Peeters/status/436179324732194816

Same here, except I'm in Toronto now.  My Ukrainian got better as my wife is from Ukraine and we speak it at home with the kids.  I still miss a lot of what is being said, especially the nuances and slang.

The stuff going on stage now is mostly to inspire I guess, not much new information being passed on.  Hang tight, I think there's a long night ahead of everyone.  With the Parliament scheduled to convene tomorrow, who know what he may do tonight.

I've been to Kyiv so I remember some of the geographical layout but I often get lost with place names and most of the newer political terms.

Lest you think that my silence denotes acquiescence with your viewpoints, I will assert here that I do not wish to converse with you. I find you to be that most abhorrent of posters; an intelligent troll.

You know better, yet you attempt to irritate and provoke outrage. I am not interested in your opinions as espoused here, because I don't believe that they are based upon any philosophy or life experience, rather, your comments are designed to insult and degrade other posters. You are no better than anyone that posts here, and it would behoove you to lose your superior attitude. This is all I have to say to you.
