WhiskeySticks: Panty Sniffer: Green lasers are the preferred color of laser for riots.

Riot Gangnam Style

Lol +1

When Morsy was..."removed" from power in Egypt, the feed I was watching had green lasers pointing in nearly every damn direction.

I had a temporary flashback to a NiN concert. Jeebus Lawd, my retinas were nearly burned out. (But it was still le awesome.)

Now it looks like they've built a big farking barrier. I wish I knew Ukrainian so I could understand what's being said.

Naatje: Listening to the live feed I heard:
That all the electricity has been turned off in the center of the city.
Now loudspeakers and main screen are being powered off of generators.
Yanukovych is now speaking with Klitchsko.
Government is worried people are going to start showing up from other parts of the country.
The Internet has allowed people to see what's going on because news channels have stopped broadcasting.
The protestors are asking for milk, water, and medical supplies for the injured.
Organizers are asking the crowd to rotate people on the barricades so they can last through the night.

Thank you, kind sir/madam.

One of my students left for Ukraine last Thursday to visit her family.

What I said was "oh that's nice. You don't often get to visit your family."

What I wanted to say was "don't your parents know what's going on? Perhaps this trip should wait!"

I know she isn't staying in Kiev, but she certainly landed there en route to her destination, and would have to do that to return.

So which feed is actually live.  The one with the equipment cleaning the area or the one with the square on fire?  Or are they different parts of the city?

The woman is saying the 'Our Father' in Ukrainian.  They are thanking God the wind has the smoke blowing on the riot police tonight.  The barricades are burning as a strategy to stop an attack on that side.  There is footage of a troop transport going up in flames.  The fire could have started then.

The Irresponsible Captain: Without getting into who's right and wrong; I sympathize with the protesters. If I were in a position do decide between Putin's Russia and the European Union I'd already have the EU flag up. On one hand you have a collection of prosperous first-world countries that may be going through a tough time right now and on the other is a depressed and corrupted heart of a former superpower.

Not to mention the decades of repression the Eastern Bloc countries faced and surely their parents remember. While that may be a government long gone, the memory persists.

Ukraine isn't elligeble for EU membership. It was a tradeagreement that was on the table, which Russia felt would flood the Russian market with made in EU goods, which Russian made products couldn't compete with (I don't know whether Putin felt it was because Russian stuff is crap, expensive or perhaps both).

EU has whethered the crisis fine btw., there's real BNP growth now, on average. Which is to say some nations, ie. the usual suspects, are still not doing so well. The EU as a whole is doing just fine though.

And wouldn't mind having Ukraines market open for its products, + Ukraine has tons of raw materials the EU would be interested in importing. They will however not be propped up like Greece, since they wouldn't be an EU member. That was what Russia was willing to do. Sell them cheap gas, and keep lending them money even though they're deadbeats.

rkiller1: 2headedboy: FREE healthcare

"Free" as in nobody is paying for it, or "free" that somebody else is footing the bill, just not you?

Even under private health insurance, the average policy holder receives much less in services than they pay in premiums. That's the only way insurance CAN work. So yes, in most people's experiences you are indeed footing the bill for somebody else.

The goal should be to minimize administrative expenses and fraud. Medicare and Medicaid are actually exceptionally good at the former, less so at the latter, but not enough to offset the administrative savings.

Fifteen years ago I worked for a physician billing company here in MA. We had two people handling just BCBS, a single commercial carrier. We had dozens more handling the rest. Meanwhile, the little old lady who processed both Medicare and Medicaid claims spent half her day sipping tea. Christ, we could have run that company on six people if there was single payor.

Bit'O'Gristle: WhiskeySticks: Bit'O'Gristle: /Ah....ty so very much for the explanation. So..same old story, the government not doing what the population wants, and pretty must just what they want to do. I get it. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!

Depends what people you're talking about. Some of those with Russian ethnicity living in Ukraine want things to stay the way they are. This keeps them tied to how things were.

/True, you can't make everyone happy, but there seems to be tens of thousands out there now. I hope they don't charge the military. True, they have numbers, but the military has heavy weapons.  And generally, when the cops or military open up, the protesters scatter like quail from a hunting dog. Well..except the dead ones. They don't run so much.

There's often a huge problem with the millitary angle in a non-sectarian conflict. Ukrainian soldiers are indoctrionated to defend the Ukrainian people, telling them to start shooting at Ukrainians might not work at all.

Remember the 1991 coup in the Soviet Union, where an army brigade was ordered to Moscow. When they arrived at the parliament where Jeltsin was holed up, they shook hands with the protesters, and vowed to defend the parliament, and refused to shoot at civilians. At which point the coup failed (and the Soviet Union with it).

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant to be closer, not to join, and to do so in an enthusiastic manner.

Good to hear the EU is doing better, it's been all Olympics all the time on the national news and I've lost track since the Greek crisis wasn't so loud but I recall the overall EU economy being described as pretty flat at the time.
