/Anyone?

As an aside, all those people who talk about the 2d amendment not being a deterrent to tyranny, think of these protest where they don't have guns and still mange to get the attention of the government.

I hope they're not armed.  If they are, the body count would be a lot higher than 9, and it'd be very, very one-sided.

So, defending with rocks is better than defending with guns?  I beg to differ. What did we learn last week when Venezuela went up in flames?

The government is showing remarkable restraint. If they use guns, the government is much less inclined to continue showing restraint and will use guns back. Then it devolves into guerrilla warfare. Think Libya without the benefit of Western air power because the Russians would go all NIMBY about it.

The protesters are already defending themselves with guns.

Well with the troubles and all, now may be a very good time to pick-up a beautiful slavic wife, bring her back to the States/Canada so she can lampoon you, take half your stuff, and ultimately run off with a wealthier man.

I also read that the government has shutdown the metro in Kiev and isn't allowing traffic into the city in order to keep "revolutionary reinforcements" from coming into the city.
Also Reuters is saying six police men dead from gunshots. It's basically a full on revolution now.

The unrest intensified after an anti-protest law went into effect. Throngs of demonstrators took to the streets to protest the law.

Let's remember that Ukraine outlawed protests.  The right to protest is a pretty basic and fundamental right for a democracy.  The current president/ prime minister whatever they call it over there supported this law that outlawed protests.  So you see where he is, politically.

Yes, there are privately owned firearms in the Ukraine. Supposedly regulated. However, when I visited, I know of a lot of Ukrainians who don't really give a crap what the law says and bribery is fairly routine when dealing with the police. If you want a gun, you can get one. I think prostitution is illegal there as well, but hookers are always sitting in the westernized hotels when you walk in. (surprising they were good looking, but yeah, not looking to get an STD)

Coming to a city near you.  Anyone looked at the price of meat & fresh produce lately?

Seven bucks for a pound of bacon?  $4.00 a gallon for home heating oil?

Let's see:

Failed political class full of self important oligarchs hell bent on squeezing the working class.

A government that spies on it's citizens, trusts no one, and "renders" political prisoners to foreign countries.

An un winnable land war in Asia (Afghanistan) that sucks billions and billions out of the economy.

Stagnant wages, diminishing standard of living, tyrannical leaders who do "whatever they want".

Sounds like the fall of a superpower to me.  Yep.  Everyone stand for the Soviet Anthem.  We're living it 23 years later.

We learned that if you are a government official, don't let it get to the point of a toilet paper shortage. That's never tolerated. Also, Venezuelan women can be dangerous when they're pissed off.

mbillips: rcf1105: Didn't Ukraine have a revolution about 10 years ago?

I wonder what happened in the meantime.

Shenanigans. Lots and lots of shenanigans. The current revolutionaries are on the same side as the previous revolutionaries; there was an elected change of power in 2010 to the pre-revolutionary ruling faction because the revolutionaries weren't able to quickly fix the results of 70 years of Soviet oppression and more than a decade of post-Soviet corruption. The current rulers are just as pro-Soviet and corrupt as they were before the 2004 revolution, hence the current re-ignition of said revolution. It doesn't help that they tried the opposition leader for corruption and imprisoned her.

It's not just good guys vs. bad guys; there's a big ethnic divide in Ukraine between ethnic Russians descended from people relocated there by Stalin, and ethnic Ukrainians. The Russian-speakers who tend to support the government are more pro-Russia, obviously, while the more revolution-favoring Ukrainian-speakers (it's a dialect very close to Russian) are more pro-EU and want to join NATO. And there's a bunch of other politics involved in forming the two sides. Suffice to say, the current government was elected in 2010 with a plurality, in a relatively fair vote, but the opposition thinks they've abused their mandate to the point where waiting until the 2015 elections is not an option.

You should read up on what all went on. There was dioxin poisoning of the opposition coalition leader and former President, for instance.

Yet another reason to be thankful to have be born in North America.

m1ke: Isn't it "The" Ukraine?

http://www.businessinsider.com/why-ukraine-isnt-the-ukraine-and-why- th at-matters-now-2013-12

If you're Russian, yes.
If you're Ukrainian, no.

When you use the definite article, it essentially means "The borderlands". When you don't, it means something more akin to "the principality". To Russians, it's a borderland. To Ukrainians, it's a principality.

The US government has an assassination program that much is known but who is on the kill list has yet to be released. Maybe it is why we don't/won't have this "problem" here.

Listening to the live feed I heard:
That all the electricity has been turned off in the center of the city.
Now loudspeakers and main screen are being powered off of generators.
Yanukovych is now speaking with Klitchsko.
Government is worried people are going to start showing up from other parts of the country.
The Internet has allowed people to see what's going on because news channels have stopped broadcasting.
The protestors are asking for milk, water, and medical supplies for the injured.
Organizers are asking the crowd to rotate people on the barricades so they can last through the night.
