In favor of? Adblock is on Firefox too.

Damn it, its already 9 and a half inches long and 7 in girth. If I get any bigger, the only woman who will be able to handle me is subby's mom. And have you seen the line?

I have been getting killed with this kind of thing lately.  Most are easily removable but stuff like "Media Player 1.1" is really difficult to get out of Chrome.

Chrome is designed to be more ad-friendly than Firefox. Firefox lets you turn off animation and page refresh. As long as adblock levels the playing field, the difference is less annoying.

This is why I telnet to port 80 and issue get requests.  To submit this comment, I wrote a quick little script in PERL using libcurl to send it as POST data

Well sure, but I expect that were Adblock to go down that path, something else would pop up in its place for Chrome as well as Firefox.

The solution is to block auto-updates to chrome, which requires (in windows) deleting the autoupdate task, or a registry tweak. It ought to be a checkbox in the options, but Google is increasingly evil.  Linux is smart enough not to allow that autoupdate nonsense for Chrome. The first time I realized Chrome autoupdated extensions was a while ago when an unrequested update broke the extension.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update]
"DisableAutoUpdateChecksCheckboxValue"=dword:^A
"AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes"=dword:00000000

I'll level with you: people think they fit in with a subculture for no other reason than they play video games, and not even intellectually challenging ones.  It's okay.  They're allowed to.  The rest of us with bizarre and detailed interests don't mind them.  They don't hurt anyone.  Except in calladooty.

Almost as cool as writing a GUI in visual basic to track down a killer's IP address.

I ran into one of those on someone's computer recently. Damn links kept getting injected on various text along with some popups. Couldn't find any adware nor anything else suspicious until I checked chrome extensions.

One thing that really annoys me is the sites that close my browser windows and open the App Store App to their app. First time it happened was a few weeks ago and I thought it was really odd. Has happened about five times since then.

For Windows users, an automated way of doing this is with HostsMan:  http://www.abelhadigital.com/hostsman

Follow-up question: what I really want to do is put this on my router, so every device in the house is protected in this way. Anyone have advice on how to do this?

Might be an option if you're running, e.g., dd-wrt on your router, but you would probably have an easier time using a proxy, like Squid, for that.

Run your own DNS server. (probably overkill)

Sure, until they sell out too.  Unless there is a way to authenticate the automated updates, you're just endlessly reshuffling the deck and redealing, hoping you don't get a bad card.
