At one point, Joan Rivers was poised to take over The Tonight Show. And maybe she got a raw deal. But that was a long damn time ago. And rather than eventually letting it go and moving on, getting her 'revenge' on those who slighted her by doing bigger and better things, she held on to her resentment, let it fester into a seething pustule of anger and bitterness. She is now entirely consumed by that bitterness, and it has overshadowed whatever sense of humor she may have once had.

TheSelphie: bluorangefyre: I had no idea that both Leno and Conan extended the ban.

To be fair to Conan, he wasn't really on long enough to say he extended it.

To be even more fair to Conan, there's no good reason to put her in front of a camera. That she's incapable of saying or doing anything at all interesting is enough reason to not feature her without calling it a ban.

I'd be willing to bet that those in this thread saying Joan Rivers is not and never was funny are also people who say women in general are shiatty comedians. And probably also really dig Dane Cook.

//her and her useless beechy daughter, too
//you know your PS is going too far when it makes your eyes freakin' wonky.

Johnny Carson was funny but he was kind of an asshole. If he felt the need to ban someone for taking an opportunity to host a show he was a serious asshole. NBC and Johnny were never going to offer the job to Joan Rivers especially seeing how the David Letterman Jay Leno BS went over.

Joan Rivers is/was pretty farking funny and anyone her age doing bong hits is ok in my book.

I agree with you, but there is kind of a longer story here.  Johnny Carson successfully turned the Tonight Show into a monopoly.  This was a really hard-won victory that took years of consistently being tops in the ratings, and he wasn't going to let that erode. If you had a show to promote, you gave him first look.  If he booked you, you took the slot he gave you and you couldn't appear on another show.  The carrot was that he delivered the largest audience to see you talk about your thing, the stick was that if you didn't follow the rules he wouldn't have you back.

Rivers jumped from his team to create a competing talk show without his blessing.  She's entitled to do that, but now she's going up against a much more powerful guy and he's pissed.  It was a big risk, with real consequences.

She's as funny as all get out, but her move didn't pay off.  The late show scene is littered with the bodies of people who tried the same thing.

Plus, lots of Carson's Tonight Show people went on to host their own shows. Carson for whatever reason took this one weirdly personally. Rivers said maybe he felt like because she was a woman he felt like he "owned" her career, and there could be something to that.

I do remember that briefly when I was a kid, she subbed for Johnny a few times.

More than a few times. She was the regular guest host for quite a while, doing one week a month while Carson did three. She quite often get better ratings as well.

She's a bitter, hateful old coont who goes off on anyone better looking than her. Which covers a lot of ground. That insulting humor that she and Don Rickles employ went out with spats.

I'm just happy Jay Leno is no longer on TV. I have no nostalgia for the Tonight Show as a franchise, but I hope Fallon does well.

Just hope that Fallon starts having guest hosts now. There was a lot of talent developed that way, and Leno had nothing but reruns.

I remember reading that all the other hosts told Carson ahead of time and he had them on the show to wish them luck.  But with Rivers he found out from the press conference announcing her show on Fox, and he never talked to her again for not telling him ahead of time.  I probably read it on wiki so take it for what its worth.

Not sure on that... by all accounts Johnny could be a very bitter man.  He was a TV God and all... but behind the scenes he was apparently not the nicest guy to anyone outside his small inner circle.

Joan Rivers used to be an excellent comedienne. Like Carson, she was fast with a quip and in bringing out the best/funniest of the guests on the show. She was never really the same after losing Carson as a friend, her failed show on Fox and losing her husband, all within several months.

/Remember watching Johnny Carson when his show was 90 minutes long.

I had no idea there was a direct causal relationship between the declining number of clowns in the United States and the uptick in sunspot intensity.  Clearly, we need to launch more clowns into the sun.
