I'd be willing to bet that those in this thread saying Joan Rivers is not and never was funny are also people who say women in general are shiatty comedians. And probably also really dig Dane Cook.

raptusregaliter: Eh, if Johnny banned someone and cut them dead, there had to be a good reason.

Not sure on that... by all accounts Johnny could be a very bitter man.  He was a TV God and all... but behind the scenes he was apparently not the nicest guy to anyone outside his small inner circle.

someonelse: kindms: Johnny Carson was funny but he was kind of an asshole. If he felt the need to ban someone for taking an opportunity to host a show he was a serious asshole.

Plus, lots of Carson's Tonight Show people went on to host their own shows. Carson for whatever reason took this one weirdly personally. Rivers said maybe he felt like because she was a woman he felt like he "owned" her career, and there could be something to that.

I remember reading that all the other hosts told Carson ahead of time and he had them on the show to wish them luck.  But with Rivers he found out from the press conference announcing her show on Fox, and he never talked to her again for not telling him ahead of time.  I probably read it on wiki so take it for what its worth.

I have no idea who'd be in her league though. The crop of young comedians, of both sexes, is mostly dismal.

Of COURSE Carson was a huge asshole. The man beat his wives. He was also a great, funny, personable host.

If Johnny banned her, she should not have been let back on. Fallon has no class.

I understand that she was banned because she didn't tell him before she took it and he had to find out in the press.

Interceptor1: I'm still banned. So don't expect to see me on the show any time soon, or ever.

I'm banned from coming within 100 yards of Jennifer Lawrence so I'm getting a kick out of your reply...

That's the way it was covered in the "American Masters" series about Carson. She was the first "permanent guest host" before this happened. I pretty much remember it going down that way at the time which shows how old I am.

Just hope that Fallon starts having guest hosts now. There was a lot of talent developed that way, and Leno had nothing but reruns.

I had no idea she was funny.

Rivers said. "He's the consummate entertainer whose reign as host, I predict, will surpass any of his predecessors.

I'll take that bet.

I had no idea that I was capable of farking an aardvark.

Whose else did Carson blackball? A quick search just shows Paul Rodriguez, Rich Little, and Rivers - but there's probably more.

FTFY

This is the best idea I have heard in a long time. Hopefully he can get a guest host before tonight's show, and then keep having guest hosts until he dies from laughing at a descent  half baked idea that he could never pull off in front of an audience.

Next up on Jimmy Fallon's agenda: Wayne Netwon.

I loved the little bit on that where Dick Cavett talked about how it became something of a ritual for him to go on Tonight the Monday after one of the shows he hosted tanked.

I'm just happy Jay Leno is no longer on TV. I have no nostalgia for the Tonight Show as a franchise, but I hope Fallon does well.

Joan Rivers could be/can be funny. She also can be terribly boring.
Joan Rivers had no idea starting her own talk show would make Johnny that mad.
Joan Rivers didn't pay enough attention to other people who p*ssed Johnny off.

As for her lifetime Tonight Show ban,  I don't care if she is on the show every night for a year.
Or never again.

I remember when Jack Paar banned Dodie Goodman, do it just shows you how old I am!!

/no , just kidding, I was a toddler at the time.

It's a good thing Johnny didn't specifically ban her from showing her face on The Tonight Show, or he would have had to reconsider with each new one she got.

TIL that the host of the Tonight Show has presidential powers, and can issue writs of clemency.

Next week: Fallon orders NBC corporate jets to enforce a no-fly zone over Conan O'Brien's Burbank enclave.

James Rieper: Rivers outlived everyone involved, so she's like the crazy great aunt who shows up at grandpa's funeral.  Sure they were feuding about something, but everyone's dead.  Who cares?

She and Leno were both Carson proteges, so it makes sense that he wouldn't have her on.  They were competitors for the same job, even if they were separated by years.  If Leno had her on, then there's an article about it, he probably has to comment, NBC brass get asked for a quote so there has to be a meeting, maybe Letterman has something to say . . .

You know what doesn't cause that?  More Lance Ito jokes.

Get back to me in 9 years or so when she's as old as Johnny was when he died.
I seriously doubt she'll still be around.

That's not what outlived means.

That's not a pancake (nor is it two), it's a Dorayaki.
