It's based on the politically popular idea that there's some magical number of classroom hours that will make a student become educated.

The gifted kids got there a long time ago. The distracted and stubborn kids need a lot more Saturdays

Debeo Summa Credo: limeyfellow: AngryDragon: NickelP: I'm surprised they got the teachers to show up for that

This.  They get paid overtime or something?

Don't be silly. Are you suggesting next they get paid for the 20-30 hours of grading, lesson planning, and requalifications too?

Teachers get really screwed over almost all the time.

It's a wonder anybody ever applies to be a teacher if they are getting "screwed over all the time".

Protip- the grading time, lesson planning, great vacation time, incredibly generous pension, etc etc are all in the package. If you are getting "screwed", farking quit.

You are absolutely correct, that it is all part of the package and no one is hiding it from future teachers....but the last part of your statement is also true, a lot of teachers are quitting.  The teaching profession is starting to see some of the highest turnover ever.  Most new teachers don't teach beyond 5 years, the older ones are just holding out until they hit their desired retirement date.

One can make the argument that teachers knew what they were getting into, but don't start to complain about the quality of education when teachers also know they can get out of it just as easily.

If it is a crap job, don't complain when only crappy people take the job and the product then becomes crap.

Richard_The_Clown: I live in the Hampton Roads area and had a gig postponed because all the kids were gonna be in school that day. Worked out for me, as I'm fighting a cold right now and had laryngitis that day!

Yesterday was a makeup day for other schools in the area. Kids are pissed because they have to go in on a holiday or a Saturday. I say, "Yeah, well we stayed in school until  Julyone year to make up for missed days from school!" Only time I ever celebrated my birthday with my classmates.

Never been asked to go in on a saturday, nor has school year ever been extended due to snow days. They issue a calendar at the start of the year which declares when school is finished, and they stick to it.

/Canada, ftw!

Seems high.

They pulled that stunt a few times back when I was in school.  I have no idea how many people showed up, because I certainly didn't.  The last few times, I didn't even bother faking illness, I just said "it's Saturday.  I'm not going to school" and my parents dropped the issue.

I recall that we were allowed to lose (IIRC) up to a week of school before "makeup days" got scheduled, and they built in a week in June for exactly that purpose.

Why can they not schedule this? "3rd week of June is the 1st of summer vacation, unless we've missed over 5 days of school due to weather"?

I can't bring my snowflake in on a Saturday!  He's had a rough five days of school and now you're pushing this on him?  He's completely stressed!  Saturday is the only day that we get to bond and do activities he wants to do like buying and playing video games.

Sunday is his father's day.  My precious child usually just sits around with Mister Unmotivated and plays video games with him.  Make Mister Can't Pay Alimony On Time drag him to school on a Sunday.  No wait.   There's that little Miss Nu-Boobs Whore teaching second grade.   He'd latch right on to that skank.

We had Saturday school in 1977 because of the blizzard we missed the whole month of January.  NObody showed up for Saturday school.  Just give up and consider it an act of God.
