University officials seized 100 T-shirts and knit hats being sold outside Comcast Center during last week's game. But besides confiscating the unlicensed merchandise, there's not much else the university can do to stop the behavior.


You could start kicking fans out of the games, or even start arresting them for causing a disturbance.

If ESPN starts deciding not to carry the games live because of the crowd, then the university will come down on this hard.

You know, it's called "College Park" for a reason. And I hate to tell you sllort, but the damage caused by rioting was primarily done by people who DIDN'T GO TO UMD. If I recall correct, only one student was arrested out of 22 people after the 2001 NCAA Finals.

And I hate to tell you, but oddly enough enough most UMD students don't come from New Jersey... they come from MD.

That said, the administrators have a point. Our language and attitude is seriously childish, and reflects poorly on the college as a whole. That's not to say we're original in our indecency; UVA and Duke (both schools UMD does not get along with very well) both have records of being just as obscene as us.

What scares me is that UMD is consulting the MD Attorney before making a decision on what to do about it. When the pondered actions are so drastic as to develop cause to see if the First Amendment will be violated, something is wrong.

i think we would all agree that dook sucks. of that there is no doubt. but maryland has the absolute worst fans in the acc, if not the country. while i agree with sllort to some extent, i would prefer to just say maryland is a bunch of loud mouthed, snot nosed yankees rather than singling out spoiled jews. it seems that over the course of a year, they have at least a half dozen major altercations with either the media, other fans, or other teams. most of the time it's all three. and it's not just their fans, it's the players and the coaches too. ralph "lunchbox" fridgen and gary williams are pathetic. maryland sucks. period.
