What chemicals were they mixing? It couldn't have been cleaning supplies.

It's not the customers, it's the staff in some of those places.

Waffle House doesn't necessarily entice underwear models or rocket scientists to join their workforce that well.

Agh, thanks for reminding me how overpriced and terrible their food is! It's right up there with The Sizzler and Clarke's in Chicago as far as shiaty and overpriced.

Overpriced?  I was at one last night with my wife and spawn and we were stuffed to the gills for under $20 including tip.

Waffle House is a vital link in the food chain.  Especially at 2 am.

I went in for hasbrowns and a couple of sausage links, set me back $9 before tip (I wouldn't have tipped based on how greasy the hashbrowns were and the ovecooked the sausages were, but the waiters do the cooking). At least the wait staff were friendly though.

This.  If Waffle House is overpriced, then the "overpriced" point is so low as to be meaningless.

So $1.45 for a single hashbrown is too rich for your blood?

Not at the one I went to! Try $5. something cents for the hashbrowns, and $3 for the sausage links. Prices vary I guess?

I'd hate to see what you consider Applebee's to be pricewise.

I dunno .. Standard Tbone steak and eggs price has gone up over 25% in the last 3 years.

If I cant get a decent hangover meal and out the door for less than $20 I'm just gonna have our DD go to Jack in the Box.

Overpriced as per quality, not the price in general. Alinea in my opinion was NOT overpriced, by my experience, or Le Passage in Chicago. Pricey as fark though. LOL, I accidentally have slighted the Waffle House crowd I never knew existed on here. :-p

I lived in the South for 15 years and have now lived in New England for 3. Every once in a while, usually after an evening of whiskey shots, I'll start craving Waffle House food.

And then I sleep off the whiskey and wake up cured of my craving.

I will give my (old) local WH props, though - they were always super friendly and obsessed with cleanliness.

Eh, fair enough.  When I go, I don't have a lot of variety to what I order:  Coffee, waffle, coffee, double order of bacon, and more coffee.  Cheap as hell, and while not a high-quality meal, is always tasty.  Can't speak to the prices on steaks and the like, though.

No, we're just pretty sure you didn't actually go to a waffle house.  Unless the store was located on the FARKING MOON there is no way you paid ~5$ for hash browns.  A triple hash browns all the way, in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, is not even that much ($4.45 iirc).

Also, waffle house food isn't about "quality", its intentionally cheap.  Its supposed to be for:
1) Truckers who want a hot meal
2) Stoners with the munchies
3) College students/low income families
4) People who are drunk as fark and want something to battle the future hangover

Though, if for some strange reason you're paying 5$ for hashbrowns at waffle house I could see why you would think its overpriced.

My first thought, but why would a waffle house have ammonia? Most fast food places use bleach as a bathroom cleaner, but i've yet to see ammonia

Every fast food place I ever worked in had ammonia.

There can't possibly be just one Waffle House on Colonial in Orange County. That's a *long* stretch of road, and often passes through WH-friendly areas.

Don't they both do essentially the same job? Just don't see the reason for having both. Unless you mean glass cleaner, but those wouldn't normally get mixed.

I'm betting somebody tried to clean a flat grill and didn't turn the fan on high.

Think gooey oven cleaner, that's what you use to really get something clean.  But the fumes from hot sodium hydroxide will mess you up if the ventilation isn't good enough.

And there's where I got checkmated on my estimation of the prices! :-p
