Sounds like a self-correcting problem to me.  Or was subby worried about overpopulation among the things feeding on the soon-to-be-ex-Aussies?

Good news, you're still number 1!

FTA: "Late last year, (Australia) climbed to fourth in the OECD's ranking of advanced nations with the largest proportion of obese citizens (28.3%), behind the US, Mexico and New Zealand."

Huh.  I would have thought it would have been one of those small Arab oil nations.  Small countries are more likely to be outliers, and the oil countries have lots of money so they don't have to work (they import a lot of laborers).  Plus, the weather's too hot for moving around in anyway.  And they rarely let their women out of the house...

Brilliant, America's plan of fattening up the Aussies with bland, second rate interpretations of Australian food has worked! First we got all their hot models, good actors, etc., but then again they gave us Foster's and Mel Gibson. Kind of a paradigm shift.

Funny; when I lived in Australia, I always thought it was ridiculous how vocally concerned some locals were about Australia becoming  Americanized.  Now their political system largely seems to be falling to shareholder value, the average quality of life is on a downward trend, and they're getting fat; live and learn.

i.imgur.com This is the data they used. Not a lot of countries.

But yeah, I bet something like Samoa or Tonga would take the title, if included, or some former USSR republic like Kazakstan where they have money, and still think McD is fine dining.

Arabs doesn't seem overweight from what I've seen. And Indians being the thinnest is hardly a surprise.

Okay, so I was wondering.  There was a thing in the news this past week about Australia doing some kind of product placement or subliminal marketing.  (I can't seem to find it right now.)

A few weeks ago the TV Show "The Crazy Ones" had a major storyline revolving around how much Robin Williams hates Australia and how stupid their marketing people are.  It was rather vicious at times but one has to wonder whether it was just paid product placement.

The only thing I can find is their claim that "no money changed hands" for the earlier McDonalds product placement episode...

Here we go. In Nauru, the obesity rate is 94.5%! (my guesses of Tonga and Samoa was close).

Yup.

As it turns out there's a Wikipedia article about Obesity in the Middle East also, and interestingly enough, while a small country (Qatar) does take the lead (45% of women and 35% of men obese), large Arab (Egypt, Saudi Arabia) countries follow very closely behind (Egypt doesn't seem to have complete survey data for men though).

But 94% -- wow.
