I have been to a few games, both minor league and the NHL, and the minor leagues are more interested in ripping each other's heads off rather than play hockey. Still very fun to watch.

It's not that difficult.

10 fighting majors is 10 players. You get 5 minutes for fighting, 10 minutes for 'game misconduct' and then 10 minutes for 'match penalty'... Even though they serve none of it and it just means 'you're ejected', every person gets credited with 25 penalty minutes.

That's 250 of it. The only 49 came from other players. For it to come out un-even, I would guess that perhaps 1 lucky bastard who got a fighting major didn't get a match penalty and just got the game misconduct.

Hockey just policed itself.  None of those guys will ever throw a dirty check again for fear of having their shirt grabbed and being punched on the back of a hard plastic helmet.

I don't think misconducts count towards penalty minutes.

I know this year in ECAC college hockey has been plagued by cheapshots in the last minute, since there's not really that much of a punishment.

You're up (or down) by two or three, why not take a run at a guy?  If it's not that blatant, you're only getting a major, and who really cares?

This needs to be fixed somehow.

Dafatone: This needs to be fixed somehow.

The only solution would be to let somebody punch somebody else.

Handing down suspensions for breaking the rules would be nonsensical.

If the goalie had to come off the bench, why did the sixth attacker not jump into a fray?

I would expect that from the ECHL but the AHL?  These guys are one call up from the majors... hardly makes for a goon league.

The Phantoms are always filled with goons.  They're trying to goon their way to the 4th line of the NHL.

It's not a troll, it's what the phantoms have always been.  Of course there are prospects with (supposed) talent as well, but the Phantoms are always a goon squad as well. Frank Bialowas, Tom Sestito, Zac Rinaldo, Brandon Manning.. all very skilled players.

There are suspensions, but because it's a short season (like 25 games or so) and there aren't many big precedents, a one or two game suspension is seen as a huge deal.  Meanwhile the cheapshotted player might be actually hurt.

My proposal:  If the losing team is on the power play, extend the game until the power play is over.

My solution.  If a player does something against the rules that could have potentially, or actually did, injure a player, regardless of how injured the player is, then suspend him for more than 1 or 2 games.

How about 10 for a first offense, 25 for a 2nd, and lifetime ban for a 3rd?

That may stop it... like it does in lots of other sports.

To get 49, you would actually have to have a 7 in there somewhere (it can only be factored as 7x7). Since there are no seven minute penalties, the only possible solution seems to be 7 majors and 7 minors (i.e., 7x(5+2)).

Obviously math is not your strong suit. Have you considered 22 minors and one major?

/yall are aware that you can get a major for infractions other than fighting, right?

Nice.  Though it sucks that there's about as many people there as penalty minutes for that fight.

\why the hell is Portland playing games in Lewiston??

Cheesehead_Dave: Looking at the score sheet, why did the clock time advance three seconds partway through the penalty listings?

There was another fight three seconds after play resumed; it can be seen at about 7:19 in the longer version of the video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZc4BPoYfcs

FUN FACT: The Portland Pirates' temporary arena, the Androscoggin Bank Colisée, is better known by its former name, the Central Maine Youth Center. It was the site of the infamous Ali-Liston "Phantom Punch" fight. And one of the Portland players who was ejected (for "Abuse of Officials") was Brett Hextall, the son of famously hot-headed former Flyers goalie Ron Hextall, who's now the assistant GM of... the Adirondack Phantoms. Heh.

FriarReb98: \why the hell is Portland playing games in Lewiston??

They were scheduled to play the first half of the season there due to renovations taking place at the Civic Center in Portland. In the meantime, their lease had run out, and the team's owners couldn't come to an agreement with Civic Center management on a new one. So they basically said "fark it, we'll play the whole season in Lewiston." Mercifully, a new deal has been signed and they'll return to the Civic Center next season. It's a good thing, too, since the Colisée, history aside, is a farking dump.

caddisfly: Putting on the foil, coach! Every game!

Fun fact, the refs started checking them for foil after that little tidbit was uncovered, so they started soaking bike gloves then sitting them on the radiator to harden up.  Of course they had to get into a fight on the first shift otherwise the sweat would soften the gloves up.
