It's interesting to see how desperate the Christie defenders are getting:

"Why are we still talking about this? It was a traffic jam!"

Of course the traffic jam might've been conducted for shady purposes, but it would be rude of us to talk about it right?

In the latest twist to the "Bridgegate" scandal, emails show Lt. Thomas (Chip) Michaels took Christie's Port Authority point man David Wildstein on a the tour of the George Washington Bridge at the start of the traffic mess.

Holy crap, they went out and surveyed the results of their shenanigans?

I hope they don't run out of buses.

When you make everything your opponent does a scandal, it's hard to see an actual scandal when it happens to your own

Did he get to "ride the helicopter"?

2014-02-16 09:58:52 PM
Yeah, just cos the guy who gave Wildstein a tour of the bridge the day before the fiasco also happened to go to the same high school as Christie doesn't necessarily mean he's some kind of Christie loyalist with any kind of special relationship to the Governor.

He's the brother of Jersey Republican power broker Jeffrey Michaels, whose lobbying firm has boomed under the Christie Administration.

Well, that's probably just a coincidence.

Lt. Michaels, who also coached Christie's son in Little League hockey

Huh, wotta small world we live in.

/Okay, all kidding aside. this looks really bad for Christie. What I'm waiting for here is evidence that Christie was pushing the Fort Lee mayor for her endorsement of his re-election and/or any evidence that Sokolich rebuffed that request.

Only a few messages in and already someone, namely me, is going to Godwin the thread by noting that the Nazis kept detailed records of the holocaust. People being arses often get off on seeing just how much they're making others suffer. It's like they're trying to get high score on some ranking of misuse of power.

2014-02-16 10:05:48 PM
At this point, the only way Christie wouldn't have known about the plan is if it was supposed to be some sort of twisted surprise birthday party.

I'm having a great time with this scandal. It's got everything except sex. Waiting for the sex.

This so-called scandal isn't going to damage Christie's political career and he's almost certainly going to be the next President.

And if it does, well, we didn't like him anyway. He's too liberal and such as.

I am disappointed "Hrick-Bouse" hasn't come in here with a graphic listing all the traffic jams NJ had under Corzine, McGreevy and Whitman.

Considering this interfered with 911 service this is getting seriously real.

There's no sex involving Christie involved in this story, that's kinda hot.

I keep waiting for Bridget Kelly to stand up and say, Whoa... Hold on a second here... I lost MY job? For these mooks?

When she starts talking for immunity, Chrispy Kreme is in deep goo.

"We break his chops a little bit, just saying, 'You're the Governor?,' looking at him laughing," Chip Michaels told the paper. "It's crazy. He grew up like everyone else in New Jersey. So to see him as a celebrity, it's just really odd. But he's the same guy. He's a grounded guy."

What's interesting is how openly corrupt both he and the Jersey Democrats are and no one cared until a traffic snarl.

The text-message exchanges between Michaels and Wildstein were included in a trove of documents subpoenaed by a New Jersey legislative committee investigating the bridge scandal.

...and we'll see legislative action against Christie when?

a) Never
b) Weak feints during 2016 that hint and maybe possible a surprise, but basically never
c) Soon (tm)

d) through z) some unrelated point some farker is going to shoehorn in

I expect and grudgingly accept corruption in government and private businesses too.

At the same time I want basic infrastructure to function, schools operate decently, and the like.

It is like when I go to a mechanic. I expect to pay for my flux capacitor to be fixed and cost me money, but I also just want my damn car back with the real problem fixed too. Why the corrupt get so greedy that I too often cannot get the latter is what really annoys the piss out of me. Overcharge me, bullshiat me, but fix it.

Wasn't there a photo of Christie and Wildstein meeting during the traffic closings? How is that not the last nail in the coffin? As far as I'm considered the question of whether Christie knew ended there.

Kind of says something about your party when the only sane, reasonable candidates of acceptable moral character you've got for the presidency are... still the best you've got even when it turns out they're  literally criminals.

There was the suggestion - although unproven at this point, but oddly not denied - that Christie himself might have flown over in his helicopter.

Regardless, this thing went on for four days.  Christie's denial of knowledge makes him either a liar or incredibly ignorant.

/which is it, Republicans?

2014-02-17 06:36:01 AM
I have to admit. He was pretty much the only recent republican I might have voted for in a presidential election.

And now that is gone.  He may not be a bible thumping mouth breather but he is as corrupt and shiatty as they come.

2014-02-17 06:49:55 AM
So, this new smoking gun that ties Christie to Bridgegate is...

A guy who went to high school with Christie, who apparently found out about the "study" the day before it kicked off ("Is there going to be a new traffic pattern installed for Monday the 9th?" on the day before), who complained about how bad it was, took one of the responsible politicians on a tour, and then had some suggestions on how to fix the problem.

From his messages in the article, it seems that he certainly wasn't any part of the plan.

benghazi benghazi 9/11 IRSgate benghazi.

These are the sort of people who probably think Benghazi was ignored because it doesn't sound good with the word "gate" at the end.

/Not, you know, because it wasn't a scandal while this is a scandal. They're reality-challenged.

There must be something either about the culture of Conservatism that makes those within it not care about context etc. or the culture attracts those unable to understand the larger picture of things etc.

What they did was certainly inappropriate and unethical but was it criminal on a federal level?

No, no, and also no.

It's a far stretch, but some suggested "terrorist act". Now, I think that's silly, but ask yourself this: If say, some high schoolers thought it would be a good prank to park two cars such that they would block the two ramp lanes, and it snarled traffic in the same manner (at least until local police could get a tow truck out there). what would THEY be charged with?

He was unpopular with the hard right conservatives before this scandal and unpopular with democrats after it broke.  Meanwhile, republican candidates for governor won't allow themselves to be photographed with him because he's so toxic while the scandal itself is imploding his "tough guy who gets things done" image and replacing it with a "petty and vindictive" image.  White House is out of the question.  The real question is whether he can hang on through the end of his second term.
