It's in Ankara, not Istanbul, but don't let that stop you from trying to torture a reference into your headline, subby.

I can't lie, I can think of quite a few tv/sports reporters I'd pay good money to see get leveled by water cannon.

You know, the last time that happened, everyone got to see just how much class the southern aristocracy possessed.  It would be nice to see the modern equivalents face complete and utter nation-wide shame, but not at the expense of another poor soul dealing with debilitating brain damage for the rest of his life.

Though I wouldn't mind seeing someone catch a right hook when they say something really dumb, I can only see that breaking down to idiocracy and U.S. President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho firing off the chain gun.

Horatio Jackson: Ah, the officer who risked his life by singlehandedly destroying...
Functionary: [whispering in his ear]Six.
Horatio Jackson: *Six* enemy cannon and rescuing...
Functionary: Ten.
Horatio Jackson: Ten of our men held captive by The Turk.
Heroic Officer: Yes, sir.
Horatio Jackson: The officer about whom we've heard so much.
Heroic Officer: I suppose so, sir.
Horatio Jackson: Always taking risks far beyond the call of duty.
Heroic Officer: I only did my best, sir.
Horatio Jackson: Have him executed at once.
Soldier: Yes, sir. Come along.
Horatio Jackson: This sort of behavior is demoralizing for the ordinary soldiers and citizens who are trying to lead normal, simple, unexceptional lives. I think things are difficult enough as it is without these emotional people rocking the boat.

It's better than that, as there is something also added to make it REALLY disperse.  You don't need to get wet to suffer.

One of my pictures from last week (I accidentally called it Jan 8, it was Feb 8) shows my eyes after the exchange caught on the video clip.

I was outside for less than two minutes once the cannon started firing.  I was dead-blind for a few more. A nice old man helped me into a coffee shop, which was full of panting and crying tourists, all suffering from the same poisoned air.

The waiter at the door's eyes were so red you couldn't make out his pupils.

All the people inside were so nice, passing out lemons for free and helping those of us truly blinded into chairs. Saray Cake shop, on Istiklal.  Go there.  They rule.

Yes, but at least Camacho listened to the advice of the smarter people in his cabinet and put it into action, which is more that could be said of previous administrations.

Pepper spray?  How Quaint.

The American government has  MUCH more effective means to break up crowds of protesters demanding an end to criminal actions by the government.

Soup4Bonnie: What do you do with the lemons?

Rub them all over your face and squeeze them into your eyes.  It stings for a second, but all the pain from the poison goes away.
I used to always go out with a lemon or two, just in case.  If you don't have a respirator, squeeze lemon juice onto a bandana and breathe through it.

My face is red in that picture from the gas.  That shot was taken pre-lemon.

The TeaTards haven't figured out that food stamps, welfare and unemployment are the only things keeping the well-armed ghetto residents out of their gated communities.

There's an old Russian joke about Leningrad which asks, what you get if an earthquake hits Leningrad. The answer is St. Petersberg. Well, that's obsolete as a joke now but we still have Istanboul. The political earthquake hit, and rather than knock down everything but the beautiful neo-classic architecture and Queen Anne style mansions, it knocked down the name Leningrad. And then those beautiful country houses and urban palaces were occupied by kleptocrats and other billionaires.

But when the earthquakes that have been creeping along a fault in Anatolia hit Istanboul, Istanboul becomes Constantinople. But only because it can't become Byzantium.

The Government in Istanboul is shaky but not nearly as corrupt and jerry-built as the city itself. Typical Third World architecture held together with a thin layer of glue and toothpicks. Only the weight of the cinder blocks hold them in place.

I hope the Santa Sophia survives. It's a bit of a fixer-upper and they white-washed over the original art when it became a Mosque, but apart from the Parthenon which was accidentally blown up while filled with Turkish explosives, it is the biggest possible casualty of vandalism or natural disaster in the region.

Turkey wants desperately to be part of Europe rather than sucked down into the abyss of the Middle East, but I recommend going back to Paganism and starting over. Maybe this time they can avoid the plague and other natural and man-made disasters that General Procopius so eloquently documents.

But at least the Turks still have a rough-and-tumble democracy of sorts. Let's hope they build better governments than apartments.

Curious - are you at Bilkent? My cousin's taught there for around a decade, within the elementary school.

Loved Ankara when I visited; it's hard to watch what's happening there through the news and through her eyes. Will definitely check out that bakery when I return, though! Glad you're safe, and thanks for the tip re: lemons.
