His ulterior motive was that Edison was promoting Direct Current as the standard for household electricity while others were advocating the Alternating Current method. As part of his propaganda to show how dangerous Alternating Current can be, he made that arrangement to have an elephant electrocuted with AC, with the sole purpose to shock people and make them scared sh*tless about having AC in their homes.

The South is a horrifying Hell filled with hideous, violent people that yowl in a guttural jibberish that only they can understand between themselves. They delight in all that is vile and brutal. If only General Sherman had access to napalm air support and tactical nuclear weapons, the world could have been spared being cursed with Southerners.

They hung an elephant?  Clearly these were not the brightest people to begin with.  There had to have been an easier way to kill it.

Furthermore, from the picture, I'm surprised it died.  Not sure where the trachea is on an elephant, but elephant skin being tough as it is, I'm not convinced this would have either stopped its breathing or broke its neck (how hangings kill humans).

So in a 50 year span 200 so about 4 a year. That seems like the opposite of a shockingly high number, 4 a year actually sounds shockingly low.

Yeah, but you've gotta admire the sheer sense of purpose it took to pull that off.  It's disturbing, evil, and retarded all at once, but it's got a certain perverse style.

Many poor whites... were the derivative victims of slavery. As long as labor was cheapened by the involuntary servitude of the black man, the freedom of white labor, especially in the South, was little more than a myth.
~Martin Luther King

The south still suffers from the planter/slave class systme just slave has been replaced by "poor"

In the interest of accuracy:

- The "murder" took place during the parade down Center Street in Kingsport, TN
- The inexperienced keeper had already been reprimanded for being abusive to other animals
- Mary did not step on Eldrige's head... she threw him about 20-25 feet headfirst into a wooden storage shed, located roughly where the Appalachian Federal Credit Union is today
- the incident occured before that part of the caravan got near a large number of people... there was no crowd chanting "kill the elephant" because very few people had seen the incident
- no one shot Mary that day
- the circus did its scheduled performance that day, and the performance the following day in Johnson City (without Mary performing)
- Charlie Sparks did not want the elephant killed.. he wanted it shipped to the circus's home in Tarpon Springs, FL
- Why the elephant was hung... by the time the circus performance ended in Johnson City, notoriety of the incident had gotten to towns farther down the line. The railroad refused to carry the elephant any farther, and the towns of Greeneville, Bulls Gap, and Morristown threatened to cancel the performances if Mary the elephant was with them. The uproar had built to the point where the State of Tennessee was prepared to pull Sparks's license. So he couldn't continue on with the elephant, couldn't ship it home, and couldn't leave her there in Johnson City. So the decision was made to destroy the elephant. Electrocution was not considered, and no one in the area had a rifle big enough to do the job. That was when the decision was made to hang her.
- the reason she was hanged in Erwin was because the train shop there was the only place that had a crane that was large and strong enough to lift the elephant
- it took two attempts - on the first try, the chain they had around her neck broke when she was barely off the ground... the resulting fall broke her hip and injured her spine. The second attempt (the one pictured) is the one that killed her.
-  The crowd watching the event was not "3000 strong" (which would have been half again as many as lived in Erwin at the time), and there were none of the other elephants present. No tickets were sold, and it was not mentioned in any of the preceding performances
- She was buried at an unused end of the rail yard... CSX knows where the grave site is, and documents from the period will give the location. CSX does not permit sightseers on its property to look for the grave (I've seen it - a friend of mine was the Erwin Shop manager at the time, and he showed me... it's just a slightly sunken grassy area next to a siding). Recently, ETSU did a survey of the site a few years ago and were able to mark the position of the bones and their condition somehow (in-ground radar, or something similar).
- the local histories of the towns involved (Kingsport, Gray, Johnson City, Unicoi, and Erwin) all describe the incident

It is worth noting that, although southerners made a tradition of hanging people for the crime of being born with different skin color, they are just so gosh darn polite.  And a lot of them know how to set the table in the proper configuration.
