neongoats: So getting mugged in a fairly normal, predictable nature by shiatty teenagers is a myth?

Hop on off your cross there, right wingidiots.

The 'kids' chose him because of his race. Flip the coin and there's national outrage. It's hypocrisy. I'm white. I've been yelled at and threatened because of it. The difference is: most people don't give a sh*t.

The veteran is an eagle and the kids are turkeys?  Interesting perspective.

They will never, ever, charge a black-on-white crime as a hate crime no matter how obvious it is.

When you look at from far enough away, all of the feminist, black, brown, pick an oppressed minority "struggle" seems to have devolved into one simple formula.  No matter what we do or say, you're not allowed to call us on our crap.  It doesn't seem to have made things any better for anybody, as far as I can tell.

Yep, the straight white male is the new targeted minority. But we apparently deserve it so it's ok.

Mr.BobDobalita: Personally,

I think -ANY- 'hate' crime legislation is completely ridiculous from the start.   So it's a worse crime if you murder someone because of their race than if you just murder them?   I don't think it's any worse.  They should both fry.  It does injustice to people just murdered when special punishment is handed down to others because it's a 'hate' crime.

One life isn't worth more than another.

Also, I don't necessarily think it makes it a hate crime if these kids were black and yelling racial epithets at the man.  Nor would I think it was a hate crime if a white guy was yelling you stupid n-word at someone he was fighting.

It's a hate crime if the crime was done BECAUSE of the race... but if you get in a fight at a bar with a guy of a different race/sexuality/whatever and you happen to use derogatory names against him, how does that make it a hate crime?   Of course you are going to try to insult and degrade the person.  YOU ARE PUNCHING THEM IN THE FACE and visa versa.  I just don't get why some people are "more important" than others.

Crime is crime.

I tend to agree. Trying to split hairs and say "X commited this hideous crime because, and ONLY because, of the victims' race/gender/ethnicity/whatever," is to give X some kind of way out. Are we then to suppose that absent the minority status of the victim, X would otherwise be a nice, loving, law-abiding person and kind to animals? Some people say so, but except during war, when things are a little different, one invariably finds that perpetrators of hate crimes are ALSO nasty, vicious people who often have numerous other crimes on their jacket. One does not beat up a black person for no other reason than that person is black--one also beats up whites because [insert other factor here] because one is a bully and a brute. The black person is just an easier, less risky target.

It's the same way with any other "hate crime": Did X stick a burning cross in the victim's yard to show his contempt for their race/religion/ethnicity? Well, then I suspect he's got little regard for ANYONE'S property or personal rights, or anyone's religious freedom; it's just that the black/Jew/Muslim he chose to do this to was less likely to complain than his wealthier white neighbors. Most people don't view arson as a way of proclaiming their distaste for others. ARSONISTS do.

I understand the visceral appeal of labeling some crimes "hate crimes" and increasing the sentence accordingly; but it doesn't seem necessary, and I dislike anything that gives the criminal a forum to justify his actions. Call a murderer a murderer and an arsonist an arsonist. Don't let him explain his motives for doing it. Did he intend to do it? Then that's all that matters.

ciberido: If indeed there is evidence that the victim was chosen because of his race, then prosecute it as a hate crime. If it can be proven in court to be a hate crime, then sentence them accordingly. What exactly is the problem? Where is the hypocrisy?

Alleged hypocrisy is based on the notion that crimes involving anti-black bias are disproportionately publicized, categorized and prosecuted as hate crimes compared to crimes involving anti-white bias. I don't think there's scientific evidence supporting the theory, but it is often suggested based on subjective anecdotal evidence, such as coverage of this story. While crime categorization is up to police, and prosecution is up to the prosecutor, the alleged crime and the 3 arrests happened more than a week ago; there has been no apparent response from civil rights groups, and five articles I checked mention alleged racial slurs used against the alleged victim, but only one discussed the possibility of racial bias or possible hate crime charges. On the other hand, it's a developing news story about an ongoing investigation; time will tell how it turns out.

Caelistis: The answer is self-evident; empower more people like Zimmerman and begin culling. You'll have less first generation problems and with their, the poor blacks, declining breeding numbers from systematic removal, you'll have exponentially less problems as the generations progress from enacting the cull. As a result, you'll also have less expenditures for social programs and jails as well, so we'll all see quite a savings.

Plus we could feed the bodies of the dead to the surviving poor people.

Interesting how you observed something that disproves your biases, yet used it to convince yourself that they're right.

What you said made no sense.   I suggest you go re-read the article, or perhaps another story on the event, then re-read what I wrote, and then respond, after putting some thought into it.  Don't just blurt something out as it may be, you know, nonsensical.
