JAYoung: How 'bout we reach a determination that this corporate person named Duke in N.C. and that other guy named Freedom in W.V. are in fact in a conspiracy to commit terrorist acts against We The People of The United States of America?Than send in the drones... or at least the federal marshals.
Doktor_Zhivago: FTA: The federal government has launched a grand jury probe into the spill and has subpoenaed both Duke Energy and Gov. McCrory's administration as part of that investigation.Great.. Now it will be a conspiracy of Obama persecution and we'll get to hear about the martyrdom of poor innocent energy executives
grumpfuff: Duh. Politicians with ties to corporations are only worth investigating if the politician has a D after their name.
Zeb Hesselgresser: Guy was an executive there before beoming governor. That's not a crime. He holds stock in a private company. That's not a crime. How does a Governor "work with Duke to quash those suits"? That would be a crime. Would not waiting for some evidence be appropriate?
hugram: My in-laws voted for this guy. My wife and I are having dinner with them tonight. It is my brother-in-laws birthday. This topic will come up eventually... and it will be started by my mother-in-law.Mother in-law: "Can you believe this spill? What a mess. Those poor people. They should sue that evil sucky Duke company."My wife: "I know. It is terrible. By the way... a couple of lawsuits have already been blocked by the Governor's administration... you know, the guy you and dad voted for."Mother-in-law: "BENGHAZIBAMACARE."Me (thinking to myself): "I could be at home watching the three-point contest right now."
Generation_D: Corrupt tea party criminal Republicans are attempting to destroy America, and you dumb hillbillies keep falling for it.
Zeppelininthesky: They need to investigate this to the fullest extent. No mercy.
Semper IvXx: Summer Glau's Love Slave: Rhino_man: People wonder why I'm glad to have left NC...now if only I can get my kid out of that hellhole.I'm a 21 year old engineering student at a large NC university. The majority of my class (myself included) are already making plans to flee North Carolina after graduation. Many of my classmates from high school moved after they received their diplomas.I completely understand your decision to leave. The job market here is incredibly bleak, and our politicians are openly derisive of education in any form. There's no future for us young'uns in this state. It feels as if Raleigh has declared war on the people./Sad, but true.Engineering? You sure you didn't major in drama?Idk how the job market is for engineering students so I won't comment on that specifically but there are plenty of jobs available in other fields all over NC. There's a huge banking industry in Charlotte, tons of tech, CIS, and education jobs in the Triangle, and probably tons of hippie shiat in Asheville and Boone. Maybe none of that helps you, but just because you can't get a job doesn't mean there aren't any. You're young enough to not know that these things come in ebbs and flows. Even though a bunch of idiots are running the state now, they won't be forever, so no future might be a bit hyperbolic. That being said, if you don't like it and you're that desperate to get out hey good luck out there. Hopefully you find that perfect state that has plentiful jobs and aligns completely with all of your political beliefs. Good luck with that./you could have just said you went to State lol//wife graduated from there///transplant, like the state just fine, like where I live just fine (outside Raleigh), less than enthused with the recent political coup the Republicans pulled off here
sprgrss: Johnny Swank: sprgrss: As much as I dislike McCrory, he isn't a the partier.Bullshiat. He's bought and sold by Art Pope, Teabagger extraordinarre, and hasn't said a damn thing rubberstamped damn near everything to come out of the nutcases on Jones St. He cleans up well, but he's as 'bagger as any of those cracker representatives from down east or up yonder in the western hills.Conservative =! tea partier. The quicker people realize this, the better.
geek_mars: FTFA: McCrory is a former Duke Energy executive, but insists that his ties to the company had nothing to do with the lax set safety standards that led to the spill.Ok, fine. What is the reason for the lax set safety standards that led to the spill? Any chance we can revisit those standards, maybe strengthen them a bit?
jaggspb: Zeppelininthesky: They need to investigate this to the fullest extent. No mercy.well it is for the weak./sweep the leg
SilentStrider: Make him drink the water.
Zeb Hesselgresser: I meant, the governor can't "quash" Federal Civil SuitsEnvironmental laws that allow citizen suits include:Clean Water Act Safe Drinking Water Act Clean Air Act 1970Resource Conservation and Recovery ActComprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability ActSurface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977Endangered Species Act of 1973 Emergency Planning and Community Right To Know Act of 1986- SARA Title III
Karac: Hobodeluxe: Zeb Hesselgresser: Guy was an executive there before beoming governor. That's not a crime. He holds stock in a private company. That's not a crime. How does a Governor "work with Duke to quash those suits"? That would be a crime. Would not waiting for some evidence be appropriate? How does a gov "work with Duke Energy"?I guess you only have to go as far as who appoints the regulators and executives at DENR of NC.Oh wait the Gov does.and DENR decides the penalties for violations.which so far have been a few thousand bucks (less than 10% of what Duke contributed to the Gov campaign)and they don't even have to clean it up or quit dumping itThey're also the fact that before an environmental group can sue Duke, they have to give six months notice to the DENR. The DENR can then stop the lawsuit any time during that six months by deciding to investigate matters themselves. The DENR has repeatedly waited until the last day of that six-month period before asserting it's authority and shutting down a lawsuit against Duke Energy.
