Is this going to be Nye's thing now, arguing with idiots in public? I do that everyday on the internet, but only he gets paid for it.

The "liberal" media is not going to side with the climate change dude. They'll cut his mic if he even attempts to make a point so she can talk over him.

Because of the Rightwing echo chamber, Nye knows exactly  what points Blackburn will make.  He'll be able to counter every point and rebuttal she will make.  He'll be able to prepare incredibly well. Also because of the Righwing echo chamber, Blackburn probably thinks she knows the issues surrounding global warming but has no idea how to prepare for a debate that goes beyond reciting talking points.  She's set up for an ass whipping.

The national debt isn't Democrats' favorite thing to talk about, but you can at least get them in a room to discuss it and make a plan to work on it. The GOP will just shut down a conversation before it even starts.

Two words: Gish gallop

I've heard that Bill Nye can get up to a nice gallop on facts alone. A gallop is a marvelous technique to use, but if the other side uses one just say "nice GIsh gallop. Meanwhile in reality" and move on with your own. fark refutation, that only lends credence to the other guy. Ignore them and go Kruschev.

2014-02-15 11:25:18 AM
Bill must be a glutton for punishment, if he's doing this one so shortly after the brain cells he must have lost listening to Ken Ham prattle on about how cool the Bible is and isn't that just what science should be. I wonder if he'll be debating Jenny McCarthy on the efficacy of vaccines next.

I do take issue with the author saying (or rather, strongly implying) Bill shouldn't do this because he's not an expert on climate science due to his engineering background as opposed to a climate science background. I mean, I agree that there are certainly more qualified experts out there. But, Blackburn isn't an expert on anything (she apparently has a BS in Home Ec)and she's the vice chair of one of the oldest and most significant House committees in our government. Bill still has a pretty rigorous background in understanding science, and he did pretty damn good in a debate over evolution/creationism, where he is also not an expert (and, again, neither was his opponent). He'll probably do a better job in this climate change debate because his engineering and occupational background means at least some of the relevant constructs are going to be more familiar to him.

yakmans_dad: Muta: Because of the Rightwing echo chamber, Nye knows exactly  what points Blackburn will make.  He'll be able to counter every point and rebuttal she will make.  He'll be able to prepare incredibly well. Two words: Gish gallop

Which is what Ken Ham did in the creationism debate earlier. And how did Bill Nye respond? With his own Gish Gallop, but one backed with evidence. It was kind of fascinating to watch. Bill held his own very well and didn't fall for any creationist rhetorical trap. He'll be fine against this moron, too, since climate change deniers use the exact same rhetorical traps that creationists do.

yakmans_dad: Get a handmade sigh to slap on his back: "I'm not helping."

Why? He is doing what scientists and philosophers and scholars should be doing more of: engaging the public. Topics such as climate change and evolution are kind of important things to understand, but the academics have done such a piss poor job of PR that charlatans have taken firm hold in the culture at large and in the goddamn government. Nye is doing more to help than all of the climate scientists who feel it's a waste of time.

Maybe, maybe not. It's on Meet the Press, so it will at least be reaching a more open minded conservative viewer than the typical Glenn Beck crowd.

For those whose minds he can't change, it will at least hopefully piss them off. At the end of the day, that's a good thing, keep poking the Republicans with a stick, keep doing the things that anger them, and keep mocking their backwards ideas in every forum available.

The angrier they get, the more extreme they become and the deeper they dig in their heels. They're darn close to just driving the Conservative bus off of a cliff just to prove that they'll do it. The more they drive ever more rightward the more people they turn away from their party and the less relevant they become.

Four more words: "Redefine victory" and "Ignore defeat." Because you just  know no matter how flat Nye stomps Blackburn's points, someone in her camp will claim 1) that merely having the dialog in the first place proves her points are valid, and 2) that Blackburn won anyway. In fact, this might just be very recent history repeating itself.

2014-02-15 11:30:51 AM
eventually, folks will realize the right wing crazies don't want to win an argument - they want the argument to live forever.

to be put upon, to be oppressed, to be standing stalwart with their nonsense as a shield against reality...it's like a wank fetish - it's the end result they want, not 'winning' an argument.

I've never considered Meet The Press as "appointment viewing" TV-not even during Tim Russert's tenure-until now. This should prove very amusing.

2014-02-15 11:34:41 AM
Why is he giving equal time to morons? This doesn't help. No one who honestly believes that climate change is made up will care about anything he has to say, and it will too technical for them to understand.

Hell it's too technical for *me* to understand, but I trust the peer reviewed scientists over the people who work for the coal industry.

That doesn't help. The old white folks that make up the American right wing are already pissed off due to AM radio and Fox News, not against Bill Nye.

I'm beginning to think it's up to the minorities here and China to save us because currently we are stymied by a bunch of conservative idiots.

you tell me - this isn't exactly a new routine. can you suspend your disbelief for long enough to even pretend that the end result won't be "Wow, this brave congresswoman stood athwart the liberal libby libs in their mainstream media MSM lamestream headquarters and cried STOP, and also Bill Nye buggers babbies'

for real - can you even pretend for 10 seconds that this won't be the result?

again, they don't want to win the argument. they want the argument to continue forever - to have the argument on the Sunday talk show circuit *is the point to begin with*. what actually happens on it is absolutely, completely, totally immaterial.

No. Advocating for science education on the most-viewed Sunday program in the US is the definition of "helping."

At least this one will be shorter.  I sat through all 3 hours and 45 min of the other 'debate' to the 'no minds were changed' ending.

is this part of the right wing game still really confusing to people?
