FTFA: The game has revived memories of the "Miracle on Ice," when the U.S. beat the Soviets to win the gold medal at the 1980 Games in Lake Placid.

Ummm...about that. The U.S. beat Finland for the gold. The victory over the U.S.S.R., while memorable, was not for a medal.

Talk about lazy reporting.

US vs Russia or any other team - since they started allowing pro players - is literally NOTHING like 1980

FTA: "President Barack Obama is not the attending the games. In what is seen as a snub, the U.S. delegation to the Olympics does not include a president, former president, vice president or first lady for the first time since 2000"

I chuckled when I read that. Barack Obama has the TEMERITY to break a 14 year old tradition of swanning off to an exotic location and burying his head in some free Olympic buffets. He's breaking a whopping six-Games streak.

He's copping flak for that? Crikey.

Might he not have more important US-centric things to do? Might he not want to save the enormous amount of coin it costs to fly his entourage-homies someplace? Can't even cut him some slack on that?

Well, since he was in the KGB for 16 years, mostly during the Cold War, you pretty much have to go with the soulless, lifeless option.

That joke never gets old!

/yes it does

2014-02-15 05:33:55 PM
I have no particular feelings either way about Obama not attending, though the absence of a higher level proxy such as a former president might indicate something of intent to snub.

Be that as it may - he probably didn't forgo attendance to merely save money -- did you see the bill for the recent state dinner?  Which is fine as far as parity goes.  I am not saying Obama bad, so put the pitchforks away for now.  There have been state dinners before and state dinners to come via presidents past, present and future, and they will always be extravagantly expensive.
