For those who might be interested, I'd like to give a huge, huge shout-out to the craftsmanship of MLPT-fan, who is easily one of the best plushie creators in the entire fandom.  I managed to snag a spot on her commission queue recently, and the result is this adorable Applebloom joining our plushie stable:

Final note:  I have started a spreadsheet file in GDrive that will chart the MMMM winners on a weekly basis.  So, if we ever need a reference, we'll have one (as best I can at least, lol)

That's cute beyond words.

But she loses points if the Cutie Mark Crusaders cape isn't lined with shiny gold fabric.

Oh, it is; I'll try to provide a pic in the morning.  In the meantime, here's a quote from her description of the finished product (as seen on her DA gallery):

"This time I made her with completely new mane, tail and bow patterns, I added satin stitches in the hair; also this the first filly with new ear pattern.  She is made out of Shannon minky fabrics, with machine embroidered eyes and details on the cape. Mouth and nostrils are hand-embroidered. Cape is removable and the lower layer is made out of soft gold fabric."

Stealing fabric from Rarity worked out fine for the CMC, it worked out fine in Manehattan a few weeks ago... what could possibly go wrong? Nevertheless I stand by my initial reaction, which was this:

derpicdn.net
This dovetails nicely with the Hasbro earnings conference call last week: "Behind a successful global entertainment, licensing and retail strategy which re-launched the brand in 2010, My Little Pony has grown to represent approximately $650 million at retail across the blueprint."

Still looking for a transcript for the NYC toy show conference call and associated analyst Q&A from earlier today (it's streamable from Hasbro's investor site but it's two and a half hours long), but the gist of the slide deck and the Q&A confirm the second movie, two more toy lines released in concert with the show/movie, and an expansion of the brand. The slide titled "Expanding the MLP consumer" aims the show at 3-6, the toys at 5+, and MLP:EG at 5-10+, and although I'm not sure that directly translates into five more years of pony, it does suggest they've recognized the growth over the past three years and are looking towards a longer-term strategy for the franchise.

I think the long term shelf-life of the franchise depends on three things:

1.  Ratings
2.  "Official" merch sales
3.  Continuity on the show's cast and creative talent

Frankly, given the nature of this specific franchise, #3 is arguably more critical than even 1+2 together.  Besides Family Guy, MLP is the only other cartoon show/fandom that I can ever recall having such a strong link between the VAs and the characters that they bring to life.  A lot of fans would be hard pressed to accept a new voice for Peter or Lois, and I think the same would be true for Twilight or Rarity (for example)

With MLP:EG having to extend its theatrical run last year (I assume the Herd had a lot to do with that) and the toys as the #1 selling doll for the Christmas season (I assume these sales were mostly made to the core demographic), and MLP being referred to as a core brand, I don't see #3 at immediate (1-2 year) risk. Looking at it purely from a numbers point of view, Hasbro's goal was to make the Hub profitable on a pretax basis in 2014, and they've got the momentum to do so. It's a lot cheaper to keep paying DHX to keep on doing what they're already doing than to try to cut corners.

Ratings and merch (vs. licensed) sales are a function of creative continuity, and it seems like they get that. On the Boys side, they're looking forward to the next Transformers movie, which, as long as it features Michael Bay blowing stuff up, should also be an hour or two of fun.

"It begins with TV but goes beyond commercials to include storytelling and content: film and television programming on all screens. First we drive the scale and reach of our brand and message to get them to like us. Next, we create more interaction through digital ads, exclusive video content, games or social media, to move the consumer from "like" to "love." And finally, if we've done our job right, they want the product. ... Let me give you an example: if we're able to encourage fans of MLP to watch a 1-minute video on YouTube, five times, this is far less expensive out of pocket and more targeted than traditional advertising, and this is why content is so important to us."

Found a site with the slide deck in convenient form. (Any similarity between this slide and the want it need it spell is entirely coincidental.

I still can't hear Flutterguy's voice without hearing one of the classics from 2011. The fandom was in its infancy back then, and people were learning how to sync frames of animation with voice. Sometimes the simplest concepts can still bring the lulz.

I didn't catch the credits this time, but last time, Flutterguy was voiced by the same dude that did the voice of Anubis from Stargate:SG-1. I find this so very amusing.

I imagine the look on his face when they offered him the part back in episode 10: "You want me to play what?"

So, does this mean that those two shooting stars that are supposed to represent Applejack's parents actually ARE Applejack's parents? :O

"Oh Maw 'n Paw, when will your low-Equestria orbit degrade enough for you to come back home?"

And that just leaves me to wonder just what launched them up there...

The show caters to everyone.  There's pop culture referenced all the way back to the 30's.  Half of Rarity's melodramatic reactions are based on Scarlett O'hara from 'Gone With The Wind'.

This. If asked, now every parent watching with their kids has an opportunity to tell their kid a funny story about a couple of singers who tried to lipsync their way to fame (same stunt, but wrong motivation), how they got away with it for years, and how spectacularly they failed.

I also got a chuckle out of the stage fright scene. Every kid knows what stage fright is, even if they don't have the words to describe it. Now they do. It reminded me of the "precipice of disaster / threshold? / brink?" vocabulary scene between Twilight and Spike way back in the start of the first episode: "It's imperative that..." "Impera...uh?" "Important!" The show never underestimates even its own target demographic.

So why does this shiat go green, again? At least the pro wrestling threads get thousands of replies, and from a wide variety of Fark accounts, so I can see why those are good for bidness.

Better to keep these Brony threads red, so the extremely small Brony clique who want to gush over whatevs will fess up $5 a month for the privilege, and also I don't have to acknowledge them.

There comes a time in a man's life, when he needs to take stock. Make an honest self assessment, so to speak - to take a clear , unsparing look at what one is actually doing with one's life.
At this particular moment in time, my brother, you are trolling a Pony thread.
Trolling a Pony thread.
Think about that - let those words roll off your tongue.
Trolling a Pony thread.
It's kind of like William Burroughs' fictional junkie who suddenly stops in mid-act with the realization that he has been reduced to stealing an opium suppository out of his grandmother's asshole.
That's exactly what you are doing here, Bro.
Don't steal an opium suppository out of your Grandmother's asshole.

Funbags: 6 accounts represent about 90% of the replies in these threads. Half of which are probably alts.

Really a fantastic episode today, they've hit a stride this season.

This is probably my favorite of the season so far, because not only is it a Flutters episode, but it also featured Big Mac and Zecora, who never get anywhere near the amount of screentime they deserve.

Big Mac in particular got some great jokes, between the turkey call contest and his "conversation" with AJ. Fluttershy likewise got some great reaction moments in this episode, and it's also nice that they didn't just instantly make her cool with being on stage like 99% of other kids shows would have done.

If there's any nitpick I have, it's that Pinkie was written as a jerk for service of the plot. But it was hilarious as hell, so I can forgive it.

/now, to go find some screencaps

Totally agreed here. I'm really hoping we might get a couple episodes dedicated to the second-stringers next season. Someone had suggested once that maybe they could do an episode where the other ponies team up to fix something while the Mane Six are off saving the world from the Worst Thing Ever or something. Which would be AWESOME.

My personal thought was that they should just adapt the comic story that's basically just Big Mac spending his whole day going around Ponyville during a festival trying to find some nails to finish a project, and continuously getting sidetracked.

/my dream episode is them doing a Simpsons rip-off and having "22 Short Stories about Ponyville"

Yes, because that would be the ultimate in pop culture references.  I kinda want to see Pulp Fiction redone with Ponies, as much as I want to see Top Gun redone IN ITS ENTIRETY with the cast of Archer...now if only I can solve this problem of translating Archer to ponies...

I don't think anyone else could be Lana Kane, or even close. Aisha Tyler would have to guest star.

Archer is as tied to the VAs as MLP is. They're both shows driven a bit more by the talent than the writers. On one hand, you need good writing like MA Larson (miss him) gives to make a scenario for the VAs. But without Kathleen Barr there is no Trixie, and thus no magic duel. It too Bender to equal Trixie's voice, and Dimaggio is a trump card. Without Tabitha St. Germain there's no Rarity or Photo Finish. Hell, there wouldn't even be a canon Derpy. Just a mysterious grey background Pegasus.

My dream episode is impossible, unless you've got a shovel. Mae Questel would have made a GREAT pony. Mel Blanc, too. Although to be honest I think Billy West is Plato to Blanc's Socrates. The student has surpassed the master.

I'm pretty sure that's Cloud Kicker in both scenes. I made the same mistake a few times during Derpy's absence. It's really hard to tell grey from purple in less than a second, on unfamiliar video, and at livestrem quality. Close, but no muffin!
