Facebook has changed its mind about brands. It has decided that users do not really want to see a News Feed full of updates from brands-Tide, Dove, Pampers, Nyquil, etc.

While I think "Liking" corporate brands is kinda stupid who is Facebook to say whether or not I was to see their updates? There's a "Block" function I can use quite easily if I don't want to see stuff from someone.

Because most people suck.  Mostly non-Farkers.

Is this the thread where we profess our hatred for Facebook even though 99% of us are Facebook users?

2014-02-14 09:28:50 PM
Because they keep changing everything? Because they keep undoing my privacy and security settings? Because, from a business point of view, they are completely unpredictable and therefore undependable?

2014-02-14 09:28:52 PM
Facebook has decided it is better to show old "important" news instead of the latest update. For example, news that a friend had a baby, even if the news was posted two days ago, will get priority over any brand's update if you haven't seen it yet.

Did they ask anybody about this before they "decided" it was better? I liked it better before.

Maybe it's the thread where we profess that we don't use Facebook, despite signing onto it once and we biatch about getting an e-mail every time a friend changes his profile pic or his kid does something adorable.

I assumed this would feature one of the many ways Facebooks screws users around. Apparently, though, subby is some butthurt marketer upset by changes that limit their free advertising possibilities. Ain't that a shame?

2014-02-14 11:46:29 PM
Mostly the people who suck are non-Farkers.  Also, I hate LifeInvader, but perforce I have a page to which I post a vanilla update every few months.  And I feel guilty that I don't live on LifeInvader or the other one instead of here.

why not both?
why not sell us the right to get out old news feed  back?

Truly odd.  This is more than directed advertising, this is specifically requested advertising.  Wouldn't it be in Facebook's best interest to get those ads to us?

I have Amazon and Tee Fury on Twitter to keep me informed of new deals. That's about the extent of me following companies on social media.

My recollection is that there was a time when you could "like" a product without it being a plea for advertising or an offer to volunteer as a shill for said product. Same as you could "like" a musician without making yourself a magnet for news of their every fart and/or hiccup. I "like" almost nothing these days, whether I'm a fan or not, unless I'm willing to be so targeted.

It's kind of amusing how Facebook has shown over the years just how little regard they have for the people who use the site yet people still use it...I don't understand it at all but then again I've never had an account.

I'm too much of an internet addict to bother with Facebook.

Besides, who needs another platform for feeling bad about your life?

In the old days it was "Gee nobody called me tonight".

Now it's "Gee nobody called me tonight, nobody texted me tonight, nobody emailed me tonight, nobody Facebooked me tonight..."

YOU know what I mean

2014-02-15 01:06:31 AM
Yeah if I DO like a company on facebook I expect to see their updates. that was the point in doing it. I will unlike them if I do not want to. It is actually a very good system, and is nothing at all like people gaming search engines.

Facebook's problem is they think they are 'the social internet' not a single website among many and that however they want to monetise and control it they will never lose users. This move makes their service worse but makes the more money.

If you aren't constantly tickled by a personal urge to "share" (elementary school style) your completely banal comings-and-goings like "Me and Dad spent our weekend night at that new restaurant with the stuffed squirrel, here's ten pictures!!", you're not on Facebook.

I like to post stupid random thoughts on it, especially around election time, but am under no illusions that anyone cares what I think about anything.

If you want people to see your facebook post advertising your product, pull out your checkbook and pay for an ad. Because otherwise, no one is going to see it.

The problem for Facebook is if you see a companies posts because you "liked" them, Facebook doesn't get paid. Thus they do this to get businesses to pay for ads instead to ensure they get seen.

Facebook has sucked ever since they removed the requirement for an approved .edu email address to sign up.

All college kids with useful tools like uploading your schedule to find people in your classes = good
High School kids + your mom = bad

Facebook sucks because fifty thousand people from Egypt like your page, Subby.

I'm pretty much ok with this.

Yes I would rather see my friends' pictures of what they're eating right now than another add for Tide.

2014-02-15 04:41:15 AM
Umm - this isn't why Facebook sucks.  This is why Facebook hasn't disappeared.  They are appealing to the masses.  Sure, if my business is running a pizza shop or gym or selling soap, whatever, I want all of my 'fans' to know all of my updates.  'GREAT NEWS EVERYONE I AM STILL SELLING PIZZA!  PIZZA PIZZA!  BUY SOME PIZZA THIS SATURDAY - 10% off!'

But Facebook users don't want to see it.

Yes, I know, Facebook users can control all of this.  They could not fan companies or whatever, but Facebook users are stupid.  They'll just notice one day that their 'news feed' is filled with crap they don't care about from when they were in college and liked the local bar.  They COULD go and remove all of those, or block them or whatever.  But they won't.

This is like Gmail blocking spam.

If what the anonymous source quoted is a true reflection of Facebook's thinking, seems like a good change. And businesses can't fault Facebook for it: how long did they think they were going to get free publicity and marketing?

Waiting for the "small" businesses to cry "I can't compete..." in 3.. 2..

2014-02-15 05:32:03 AM
So they made it so businesses don't get so much free advertisement. This is a bad thing how?

Yah, well just because I chose to 'like' some great but long gone show it doesn't mean I appreciate having whoever  runs that fan page spam my feed with shiat about it every day.  Too bad for those attention seekers doing it through facebook, sorry no free ride, not yours.  Pay up like facebook asked if you want to use them to promote yourself.

I dont care about brands. Show them, make them pay, I don't care.

But posts my friends make? Show them all. Don't filter them. It's absurd, and will be the death of Facebook.

Sarcasm aside, the Fark comment experience is different (not necessarily better or worse though) from the Facebook experience because it's story-oriented, whereas Facebook is person/user-oriented.  I do value exchanging ideas about specific topics or stories with other Farkers, but I rarely care which particular users they are, and, for better or for worse, I never care about who they are in real life.
