Their tower-defense game on 360 was pretty fun, but I don't know if this ranks as a $60 triple-A title.  I'd like to see what the playthrough times will be.

I wonder if you'll run across old characters. Like a quest to kill manbearpig, or something.

Oh, come now, I expected better from you, like a 250 word rant about how if the console or computer isn't using all of its graphical processing power there's no way the game will be good since the graphics will suck. And also, who watches a 15 year old cartoon, anyway? Retards and neckbeards who masturbate to MLP and furry porn. South Park was played out in 2001.

I've been interested in this game but was going to hold off until there were reviews first because there's been a long history of really crappy South Park games. But this actually looked really nice and fun to play.

There are different classes you can play if you preorder (you can see them if you look at their Steam page) which seems tempting. Honestly I'd like to know the general playtime for the game first because $60 is a lot more than I pay for most games nowadays. I guess previewers will probably say what it is before release.

I'm in the same boat.  This looks amazing from what I've seen, and I'd love to get it, but I'm nervous it will be like that PS2/PSP/Wii Harvey Birdman game:  Utterly flawless fusion of Phoenix Wright with Harvey Birdman, felt exactly like an episode of the show, but you could get through the whole thing, including all the "wrong" choices, in about 2 hours.  At this point, though, that's the only thing keeping me from ordering this.

I was hoping for a brawler, not old-school turn based.  The writing may save the day though.  I'll wait for reviews.

If it helps, it's an RPG made by Obsidian. Their last big RPG was New Vegas, and those play times are anywhere from 20 hours (focusing on main quest only) to over 200-300 hours. Their last action RPG (Dungeon Siege 3) has an average playtime of 20 hours.

I'm sure this'll be in the 20-30 hours minimum (only focusing on main quest).

Oh, I'm well aware it's an Obsidian game, that's one of its biggest draws for me.  I think you might be overestimating it, though, since I doubt this game will have anything like the exploration opportunities of New Vegas.  If anything, it's probably more comparable to Alpha Protocol's fairly linear levels.  Still probably worth getting, but I'm not going to preorder just yet.  Sometimes Steam does a 10% discount for preorders, so I'll probably wait and see if they do one here.  Probably not, since there's already a preorder bonus, but you never know.

They might well be, but I don't think that's the main thrust of the name.  When Butters addressed Cartman as Grand Wizard, they already owed me a new keyboard.

After this tutorial thingy, is it going to be an open-ended world where you can explore and interact with stuff, or is it going to be another linear breadcrumb plot where all you do is watch cutscenes and click on people with exclamation marks above their heads?

Yes.

FTA: The Stick of Truth at its core is an open-world, turn-based RPG. Yes, open-world, and interestingly, to the best of our knowledge, The Stick of Truth is the first time in South Park history that Trey Parker and Matt Stone have actually mapped out the Colorado mountain town. Players will have free reign in South Park, with there being multiple quests to embark upon, collectibles to collect (like 30 Chinpokomon) and random things to do, you know, like fight hobos, which incidentally we did, something which is actually an in-game 'collectible' - there are so many hobo camps to relocate.

Pretty cool that this is the first time they actually mapped out all of South Park.

Also knowing the quality of the game into the endgame is important in this case. Many of the previous Obsidian games I've played had an overall declining slope of quality as the game progressed, with an incredible first few hours of gameplay eventually devolving into half-assed buggy tedium at the end. In NWNII and KOTRII in particular it became clear that they ran out of time and rushed the end of the game to get it out the door. With all the delays I hope that this pattern is broken, working directly with the creators like they have might've given them leverage to enact those delays so they finished what they started this time.

It looks like a generic final fantasy game, only more watered down and with south park smeared all over it.  Does it have anything else to offer beyond that?

This.  If I'm going to drop $60 or more for a game, I want some citation that I'm going to get my money's worth out of it.  Made that mistake with DCUO, SWTOR, and about three other mmos.

//i do still play swtor though, the endgame isn't great, but i like rolling up new characters over there.

This is being distributed by Ubisoft.  They and EA are on my no-buy list.   Does Ubisoft still demand you go through their crappy UPlay client?

Nope. They've flat out said that the game will not use the Uplay client. It's fully integrated with Steam.

I was not aware of that, but that's even better.  I just spit out my coffee when Cartman welcomed Douchebag to the KKK, and realized the joke.

Reportedly, the game has been completed for some time, and the delays are a consequence of the bankruptcy of THQ and the desire of Ubisoft to push back the release date.

That may be the true case, the only thing I've read on the delays was the official line:

http://blog.ubi.com/south-park-the-stick-of-truth-delayed/
"'Within three weeks after acquiring the game, we sadly realized we had to turn this thing upside down if we hoped to deliver the experience everybody wanted,' says Ubisoft North America's president Laurent Detoc. 'It's been such a major overhaul to get to the point where we are that we couldn't let it go, even if that meant missing December.'"
