ChrisDe: Bluevirage:

> If they only did computer modeling as far as factoring how the suits would effect drag. Then yea, they have some slight ground to stand on. I figured they would have had actual athletes wear the things on test tracks. You know, like how it should be done. Real world variables and all that jazz.

> If they did do that, then the athletes are having issues they need to address. Otherwise, they need new super suits.

Weird that in 2014 they would introduce these suits during the Olympics with absolutely no prior testing.  It's like they just bought them off the rack at Dick's.

FTA:
"Working in partnership with Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin, Under Armour relied on computer modeling based on filming the athletes and hundreds of hours of wind tunnel testing to design the new skinsuit. The skaters tested versions of the suits over the past two years, but didn't see the finished product until after making the Olympic team in December's U.S. trials."

Something doesn't add up. I'm presuming those two bolded sentences FTA overlapped quite a bit, ie. lots of hours of wind tunnel testing with Olympic skaters wearing the suits.

A bad workman always blames his tools - GIVEN! But for USA speed skaters to produce such a shiateful performance across the board. What gives?

** Are Under Armour telling fibs about their testing regime?

** Have all the USA speed skaters gone missing mentally at exactly the same time?

** The only other one I can think of - not likely and tin foil hatty - is the Russians have poisoned the Americans, but in a dose so low it is producing no symptoms except a tiny drop in performance.

Hmmm, maybe not too tin foil hatty. It's happened before in a major sporting event.

I don't think it's the suits. Maybe, just maybe, it's the fact that us skaters are acting like they are doing a pity lap at an uncool rink when they would rather be somewhere else. There's no hustle and fire in their races. I've watched all the men's so far and it looks like they are half adding every race. No us Olympic skater should be almost an entire half length behind during the entire race. It's pathetic.

This is how you know your suit has the best aerodynamics: when you have to nip slip just to catch your breath after your race.

"The mesh was designed to vent body by Under Armour, the Baltimore-based sports apparel brand, but some worried it was creating drag."

Well, there's your problem. You have a vent big enough for an entire company to fit through. It's like skating 100 parachutes behind you!

Breaking news is that he was a suit designer for the British female team in 2010:

dr_blasto: carnifex2005: Blues_X: warrenn: I agree that something is weird about those suits. It almost looks like they have a wetsuit on. The other competitors have something that looks like a single piece of spandex, but the USA suits have lots of seams, look thicker, and don't seem to fit very well.

I was noticing a gap around the jaw/neck area, and wondered if it would catch air when they were skating.

If you take a close look at the Canadian uniforms, there are also seams..

seams? I don't see any seams.

Of course you don't.  Wrong side.

There's the answer right there: go commando.

This is low speed aerodynamics: I hardly think the suit is going to be much of a factor compared to those giant cranium containers.

Yeah, that just doesn't look like it is very aerodynamic to me.

Can we start with the chick from carnifex2005's post?

(In best scruffy the janitor voice) Second.

Hey guys, I designed a better suit. Still working on the male version.

i know that's probably true to life, but the contours of that dude's leg are whack. looks like he slapped a brisket on the side of each thigh.
