Better question would you average Chinese citizen sit in the wrong seat even if it were unoccupied?  I'm betting at least half of Canadians wouldn't.

I've never seen a theater that had numbered/assigned seating.

Laugh all you want guys, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

With around 1.5 billion Chinese people in a culture that:
 - Only allows 1 child per couple
 - Favors male children over female ones
 - Allows abortion for sex selection purposes

It leaves us with a huge surplus of horny lonely Chinese guys looking for mischief. Today it might only be a theater, but tomorrow it could be California and moving East.

All kidding aside, I like this guys moxie. Rather than the grid shown above, I would have gone for a checkerboard pattern. But the Chinese seem far more ordered than I so who knows. Maybe it has to do with them having Chinese checkers and not ours?

/ok, I'll stop rambling.

If you've ever had to wait in line in China you'd realize how brilliant this is. If there were not assigned seats it would be utter anarchy.

I've had assigned seats here in the US recently, when I went to see the Hobbit. I think the 3D movies prompted this move to picking your seat.

(pick as in choose, not pick as in mine for butt gold)

They are all over Asia.  The 'west' is pretty crappy behind on this.

Walk up to a ticket counter and the seats are displayed right there for you under glass on the counter.  You can see all the seats that are taken and pick the ones you want.  It's a much, much, much better system.  No extra cost, no fuss, no muss.

Never have to stand in the back of a theater trying to find seats together in the dark after you've already bought your tickets.  Waiting in line?  Nope.  Go get your tickets for the opening night of the new blockbuster and show up ten minutes before it starts.  Go right to your seat.

He he, the best kind of nerd troll.

but yes, this is defeated easily if there is no one sitting in the seats and even then if couples just tell the other person to move over .to

ZAZ: Will they send bodies to occupy all those seats?

If they don't, the couples can go ahead and sit together. If they do, they have to spend their evening watching Beijing Love Story without the excuse that "my girlfriend dragged me here." Seems like a lose/lose prank.

The real winners are the guys with dates, who either don't have to see the movie, or better, have the perfect setup to tell their dates "Hey honey, want to really burn the guys who tried to ruin your special evening? Show 'em what they're not getting by blowing me right here in the theater."

The "good" theater here has assigned seating, and the ushers will actually make you move if you sit in the wrong seats (they check ticket stubs). Even if the theater is empty.

I think it is awesome, I love not having to get there early to get a good seat.

In Utah, a local movie chain started doing assigned seating a few years ago. It's seriously awesome - you can buy your tickets online days (maybe even a week or more) ahead, see how crowded the theater is ahead of time, avoid lines, etc. You just show up to your movie with enough time to grab some popcorn, knowing you've got seats waiting for you right where you want to sit. Cinemark has started doing this now to compete, though it may just be local.

I think sex-selective abortion is illegal in India and China, in much the same way that exceeding the speed limit is technically illegal in America. At least it is discouraged. Ultrasounds are locked up in one of those countries to help prevent mothers from learning the sex of the fetus.

The nice theater here in Huntsville AL has assigned seating too. It's not new or strange. They don;t enforce it typically unless the theater is crowded.

No additional cost but half as many seats so either buy your tickets online early or don't even bother showing up.

That would be a plus. It's so boring getting there early. Though when I go to a movie there is usually only a couple of other people there. Very empty. Small town. Though when Pirates of the Caribean was shown the place was packed.

My theory is that with the advent of amazing home theaters they are not filling anyway and this is an attempt to draw people out to the movies again.

We have assigned seating in movie theatres here.  It's great.  On the rare occasion I want to go see a movie that's going to be pretty popular, I love being able to log into the theatre website just after midnight when the tickets go on sale and reserve great seats instead of having to fight with the throngs, get bad seats, and potentially not be able to sit with my husband and/or friends.

It's awesome... You don't have to go hang out in the theater for an hour to get a decent seat anymore.

We have assigned seating here in Japan, so China is probably the same.
