Nothing new, they've been doing it since the business began.  The difference now is that the 'second-string' movies are just as big and expensive as their counterparts, but maybe only got beaten to the punch on promotion or on the release date.  Personally, I like the Roger Corman school...take the main idea and expand it by 20 times, and shrink the budget by 40 times, stick on a sensationalistic title, and make money on every picture.

Holy fark.  That website's popups are the most annoying I have seen in a long time.  Fark that.

Boy meets girl, falls in love, dies trying to get the girl. Is this Romeo and Juliet or King Kong?

Stories are generally the same, the specifics make the difference.

So how does it go? Writer A is shopping a script around Hollywood and is laughed out of many meetings, right up until the point that Studio A says ok.

At which point someone who already said no has second thoughts and gets their own writer to do something vaguely the same?

They have been doing it forever, see el dorado / rio bravo.
Both by john wayne, one in b& w, other in color , changed a few names and a few lines of dialog, otherwise it;s the exact same movie

Man, you'd think movies were paid for by tax dollars judging by how upset some people get.

If only people cared half as much about things that ARE paid for by tax dollars as they care about things that aren't paid for by tax dollars....

Talking about tax dollars automatically puts me in the Politics tab?  I'll have to remember that next time stadium talk breaks out in the Sports tab.

In this case, however, I'm specifically talking about how the production of movies is NOT paid for with tax dollars, so I think I'll stay right here.

I guess the Obvious tag was out at the movies.

Pretty much.

Sometimes there's just an odd thing of synchronicity and coincidence, though. There's so many films of Robin Hood that it was bound to happen that one year you'd get 2 released at the same time. Dredd and The Raid look like copies, but apparantly they were independently thought up. The odds of 2 WTC films getting released about 5 years after the event was high (and both explore different stories - for me, United 93 was incredible BTW).

Care to enlighten us about what non-political bodies have the ability to levy taxes?

Perhaps a slight tweek to your Fark-Handle is in order.   May I suggest replacing "Return" with "Grasp"?.

My point was if you want to rend your garments and gnash your teeth about how tax dollars are spent then the political tab might just be a place for you,  instead of inserting a complete non sequitur into a discussion about the intellectual bankruptcy that Hollywood has become famous for.

I'm sorry if you're looking to pick a fight, but I'm in no mood to argue.

I don't give two squirts about taxes.  I just find it hilarious how bent out of shape people get over the movies that come out of Hollywood.  As if Hollywood were spending THEIR money.

I feel like you're having an argument with the words you're putting into my mouth and not with me.

Where did I say I personally care what's done with tax dollars?   I'm just saying people spend a lot of time worrying about shiat that has zero impact on their lives, and I used as an example something that does have an impact on their lives.

And why is your non sequitur about Fark topics OK, but mine about people caring too much about what Hollywood does or doesn't do is not OK?

I am not mad at the "it has been done before" ideal, it is the blatant refusal to even put a modern spin on it that pisses me off.

The Romeo and Juliet that was done in the late 90's is a good example of re-doing it correct...it got me to read the original text and I liked the idea of guns being named after swords as a new twist.

but then Hollywood got very lazy and we started to get the "vs." movies...'alien vs predator'  ' freddy vs. jason', etc.

If we are going to go with the 'vs' theme, I wanted to see "Aquaman vs. Jaws"...Aquaman's special power is the ability to talk to fish...I wanted to hear what clever thing Aquaman had to say when Jaws is bearing down on his ass after Jaws heard from Flipper that Aquaman was talking smack about Jaw's mom.  Apparently Aquaman said that Jaw's mom was looser than a tuna net and she just floudered on the seabed.  Regardless of the fact that Aquaman's nickname is 'shrimp' among the fishfolk.

/personally I think they are re-doing/rebooting franchises too quickly...Batman and Spiderman I am looking at you.
