According to wikipedia (yeah I know) the Mona Lisa was bequeathed to Leonardo's assistant upon his death and was then sold to the king of France.  France owns it fair and square and there was never any foul play or thievery involved.  Sorry, Italy, you're SOL.

also according to wikipedia it was partially panted in france... so you can't even claim its purely an italian piece. I get it when disadvantaged countries want antiquities that were taken from them under duress or through illicit means to be returned. but in this case, i don't see any way in which italy has a claim.

Maybe he should get a gang together to steal it. He would need about 14 people to do this. They can call themselves Ocean's 14 or something like that.

How about we let this 400 year old paint on poplar board stay in it's climate controlled box. Moving it can only harm it. A lot of conservation on items older than this is not to touch them.

The Mona Lisa is precisely where it belongs, but the Elgin Marbles and the Egyptian antiquities are a tricky subject.  On the one hand, these items were taken from their home countries without respect for their cultural value.  On the other hand, Egyptian and Greek museums simply aren't up to the standards needed to preserve these treasures for the future.  It's a moot point at the moment with Egypt trying to pull together a new government and Greece in the deepest pile of financial crap imaginable, but as stability returns it will become an issue again.

Part of the "taking it back" mentality is to remove the offending party from the name. Elgin was the dude that took the Marbles to Britain.

FTFA:

London mayor Boris Johnson has since bizarrely compared Clooney to Hitler for making the comments. "Someone urgently needs to restore George Clooney's marbles," . "Here he is plugging a film about looted Nazi art without realising that Goring himself had plans to plunder the British Museum.

"And where were the Nazis going to send the Elgin marbles? To Athens! This Clooney is advocating nothing less than the Hitlerian agenda for London's cultural treasures. He should stuff the Hollywood script and stick to history."

Pretty ironic, considering that the "cultural treasures" in British Museum are all stolen from other places.

It could be argued it was more of a tug-of-war between the mediterranean europeans (Greece and Rome), then the middle east, then back to europe, then only the brits and spaniards, then just the brits, and we finally pass the staff to the US.

That could be argued, but it would be a poor argument. Leaving France, Portugal, The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark/Norway, Sweden, Germany out kinda misses most of the colonies.

USA got what, Liberia and the Phillipines? USA wasn't ever in the game, and besides, is an European colony, so it counts as team Europe.

Japan did some stuff. Manchuria, Korea and the like.

Probably because USA realized midway through the road to Classic Imperialism (with stuff like the Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine) that Classic Imperialism is farking inefficient. You "conquer" tons of land and people, and THEN you need to care for them and provide protection? That depletes your resources pretty damn fast if you're not careful. And even then, it's a waste.

USA figured out that you could extract the same or even larger profits, without having to spend as much and sometimes even nothing. That's why they became the living and breathing example of Capitalism.

All the land appropriation USA cared for after WWI/WWII was strategically located bases all around the world. Gives you the same power projection benefits of land owning, with a fraction of the costs.

That's the history of everywhere.  Recently doing some reading up on the subject and I've come to a conclusion: everyone in history was a dick.

I think the most amazing part of this story was the London mayor's comments.  Clooney said something kind of silly, in light that he didn't know or care until he learned about it while making pretend in front of a camera, but that mayor said something the kind of weapons-grade stupid you'd expect from Sara Palin.
