Because there isn't an actual drop down list to choose from.. You have to check "Custom" and start typing in the box and it will auto complete...  As usual Facebook makes something that should be simple stupidly convoluted and not straightforward.

Is there an option for 'Special Snowflake"?

Gender identity is complex, but if you can't find a label you can identify with out a set of, say, a dozen, you're not trying hard enough.

That's why they left it open-ended, so people who don't feel that it is accurate to fill the standard options, which the listed are not and there are only three of, can either see a suggestion, which the listed are, or fill in their own.

Stupid question: If you are trans, wouldn't you put the gender you turned into? Don't you not want random idiots into that part of your life? If I were trans, I'd say I was female and that would be that.

Ideally, there should be three gender choices: Male, Female, and Yes.

It depends what kind of trans, the article would imply. :)

That's a species, not a gender.

Are you married or in a monogamous relationship? Does your S/O come home late a lot or go on an inordinate amount of business trips? Are the people you have blocked on your S/O's friend list or do they leave where your S/O travels? Does your S/O know your password in order to go in and block people they may not want you talking to?

Or, in order to avoid putting a caveat before every date and a conversation with every person in their life, they just do that and everyone knows.

You're not actually required to give anyone any attention just because seeing a word might make you give them attention. That's on you, ball's in your court.

Two spirit is the traditional native american term for gay men.

To the best of my knowledge 'two-spirit' is the English translation of a Native American (I have no idea which dialect) word for gay.  From what I've heard they accepted that this was simply the way that some people were and let them be.  Sort of like we should.

Weng: 'Complete' list. Missing 'Male' and 'Female'.

It's a complete list of the options that Facebook presents as suggestions when one chooses "custom" for gender.  Male and Female aren't options under "custom" because they're options on the previous menu.

2014-02-14 09:33:54 AM
Meh. This is just Facebook doing some data mining. They didn't provide these options because they actually care.

Totally on board with all that. But doesn't "gay" sum it up. Isn't that the same as using a foreign word to describe yourself? Like if I wanted Facebook to have instead of male, mannlich because I preferred the German word?
I looked up cis also. It's one of the ways trans people describe people who aren't trans, or at least that's my understanding. Does that mean it needs its own category?
I find this all needlessly confusing. Maybe instead of having a list, they should make it a blank. Like with name.

doubled99: C'mon guys, it's not that big a deal. Whatever it takes to make people on the far fringes of society feel more comfortable.

While there's definitely legitimacy to the gender identity issue, the problem is that the movement has been overrun by attention-whoring special snowflakes who want to cash in on the delicious outrage of being oppressed without actually having to be oppressed.  Therefore, while I'm sure that the legitimate LGBT members will appreciate this system, the vocal social justice warriors will inevitably find some fault with it, like it not including otherkin or headmate systems, because to them it was never about justice, but rather having a constant source of faux outrage.

2014-02-14 09:40:42 AM

Ivandrago: Isn't that the same as using a foreign word to describe yourself?

Well, since they're Native Americans "gay" would be a foreign word.

"Two Spirit" is more a Native American concept.  You'll notice it's actually two English words.

As far as I understand it Two Spirit involves more than just being gay.  But I'm a white guy who learned what little I know in a Liberal Arts college.

I guess the most important question is why should we care if our gender is already on the list?  The gender that people I do know select on facebook is about as important to me as the cost of a cab ride in Tokyo.  Sure I might encounter it at some point in my life but I don't live with it and it doesn't harm me. I'm not saying that it would either, for all I know cabs in Tokyo could be very reasonably priced.  Who cares what gender people are? If anything all this does is play a small part in poising the metadata well and I'm just fine with that.
