I agree that fast lane idiots arbitrarily establishing what the speed limit ought to be is irritating to the max.  However, continuously ramming the slow driver on the highway and in a shopping center is just a bit over the top and fully worthy of a lifetime ban behind the wheels.

Actually, the article doesn't mention the fast lane angle, I made up that part. It doesn't say what caused the road rage, but anyone who inflicts harm on a bad driver, other than a honk and a one-fingered salute, has serious anger issues. The guy is crazy. Meth might be involved.

...What the terrified driver and his daughter discovered only later, was that a knife wielding maniac was creeping up from the back seat to murder them both! It was only the quick thinking and brave actions of the suspect that kept the killer in check and forced the victims to flee their car before he could strike.

Depends on how slow they were going and if they'd done it before.

Also if the driver was from Ohio.

My rule is always check the license plate. If the plate is more than 2 hours away, I'll give someone a pass for driving like a farktard in an area. Closer than that, I yell strings of profanities that would make a Tourettes endowed sailor blush.

CSB while I finish having my shiat:

Today I was driving in the right lane when I came up on an intersection. Someone in the left lane started signalling right as I came up because there was a car ahead turning left, preventing them from proceeding. Apparently they were very upset that I didn't slam on my breaks to let them get ahead of me, so they started honking at me as I passed. So I flipped them off as I slowed down enough that the light changed by the time I got there, then ran the red, leaving them stuck at the intersection for another cycle.

Felt good.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.  Driving the speed limit is not arbitrarily establishing what the limit is,  It's established by law.  You should have no reason to complain because, and I know this is a hard concept for some people to understand but.... YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GOING OVER THE SPEED LIMIT.

Also I'd like to say this is BS: Gagon faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault and one charge of careless driving for the Saturday night attack.

This is what is wrong with the American justice system.  He should be facing 1 count of road rage.  There is no reason to include 5 charges for one act.  Especially when the first 4 charges are for the exact same crime:  Assault.  That should be 1 charge of assault and perhaps one charge of careless driving.

The guy's a psycho, and of course his behavior is not acceptable, but there's no way the dad was just innocently driving along doing nothing when out of nowhere this driver started ramming his car. He probably did something passive-aggressive to get in the guy's way, then when the guy honked at him, flipped him off or something along those lines.

Again, psycho's behavior is totally wrong and out of line. But if you avoid being a passive-aggressive jackass, you're much less likely to piss off the pscyhos.

He assaulted two people. Each was a victim. Assault with a deadly weapon is a separate charge. He did that to each of them. He did it while (once) driving unsafely. Seems perfectly reasonable, especially since there is no such crime as "road rage" and he did this showing callous disregard for human life and public safety.

Methinks you are trying to excuse your own tendencies here.

Reminds me of my old Army days stationed at Ft. Bliss, 1971.  The whole battalion was up in the McGregor Range for our FTX.  We were standing around shooting the breeze, probably after dinner, when a duece and half rolls up.  Out pops one of the enlisted guys and Lt. Krantz.  Krantz is complaining that they went to pick up the blank ammo for our M16's (there were going to be "aggressors", so we were going to play "guns") and they had to wait for an hour before they received the ammo.  I was wondering why they had to take a duece and half, and not just a 5/4.  Just how much ammo did they pick up?  I looked in the back of the duece and could see a bunch ammo canisters.  On two of the canisters I could read "5.56mm, Rifle Ammunition, Ball", or however it was phrased.  I walked back to where Lt. Krantz was still complaining about the delay, and said, "Er...sir, you picked up regular ammo, not blanks."  Krantz looks at me like I'm crazy, and says, "No, they gave us blanks."  I said, "Well, look for yourself, sir, it says "ball ammunition" on the canisters."  Krantz looks into the back of the truck, runs to the cab and gets the paperwork out and realized that he had signed off for the ball ammo instead of blanks. It meant a trip back to Bliss and then a return trip.  They weren't back until around midnight. I realized that they could have been given warheads to Nikes and wouldn't have noticed the difference. I thought we should have kept the real ammo. We would have surprised those aggressors.  We would have surprised them, real good.

I see this exact same argument constantly here, and you have NO MERIT.  Like someone pointed out, you're supposed to leave the law enforcement to police.  If you try to force people to drive slowly because you can't handle it (this is what I assume), eventually you're going to do it to a crazy and then have your  own story on the 10 o clock news.

I don't mind at all when I'm in the left lane going 5 over and someone comes up on me quickly.  I happily get over as soon as I can, as the dickbag will be attracting any police attention, and I know I won't be hassled.  I actually had this happen on the interstate, I got over for some guy going 90-100 MPH, and no more than 45 seconds later a state trooper nailed him.  It's always been my fantasy to have that happen, and it finally did!

Stay ALERT on the road people, I keep tabs on the rear view mirror constantly and do my very best to not slow anyone down or inconvenience anyone else.  It's called being a good human being.

JesusJuice: CSB while I finish having my shiat:

Today I was driving in the right lane when I came up on an intersection. Someone in the left lane started signalling right as I came up because there was a car ahead turning left, preventing them from proceeding. Apparently they were very upset that I didn't slam on my breaks to let them get ahead of me, so they started honking at me as I passed. So I flipped them off as I slowed down enough that the light changed by the time I got there, then ran the red, leaving them stuck at the intersection for another cycle.

Felt good.

I had some kid flip out on me because I didn't stop to let him over for a lane change.  He was in the right lane, but needed to make a left and I didn't see his turn signal till I was beside him watching him almost go into convulsions over his anger that I dared to just drive the lane in hopes of getting down the road.  Thing is, it is one of situations in a small area with heavy traffic that if you want to make a turn, you're best to be in the lane you need way in advance.  Kid missed his turn, but he made the next one that is only 30-40 yards further down and not too difficult to get back to the road he needed.  If he didn't get over it, too bad, I'm over it.

I did the red light move, once.  A lady was pulling all sorts of crap, and after I finally got around her, she sat laughing at me at the next light.  So when the light turned green, I sat.  When the light turned yellow again, her mood changed dramatically.  I'm not particularly proud of that one.

knight_on_the_rail: Which laws punish people for driving the speed limit again?

The spirit of the law is now shifting to "first, do not impede the free-flow of traffic". Because doing so introduces risk where there was none, the left lane should be used primarily for passing and does not constitute your own private little kingdom of being a self-righteous prick?

Stop endangering lives and you may live longer. News at 11.

I agree that fast lane idiots arbitrarily establishing what the speed limit ought to be is irritating to the max.  However, continuously ramming the slow driver on the highway and in a shopping center is just a bit over the top and fully worthy of a lifetime ban behind the wheels.

Which laws punish people for driving the speed limit again? I think I forgot those ones.

Your google-fu is weak, sir.

From a Utah government site:

 (1) (a) On any highway:
            (i) the operator of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall:
            (A) except as provided under Section 41-6a-705,  promptly pass the overtaken vehicle on the left at a safe distance; and
            (B) enter a right-hand lane or the right side of the roadway only when safely clear of the overtaken vehicle;
(ii) the operator of an overtaken vehicle:
            (A) shall give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle; and
            (B) may not increase the speed of the vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle.

There's an example right there. You're going 40 in a 45, someone goes to pass, and you decide to do the douche maneuver of speeding up because you feel like being Johnny Law.  Guess what?  You just broke the law, even if you didn't exceed the speed limit.

Want some more examples?  Take a look:

People who drive exactly the speed limit in the left lane are safe. Because nothing's safer than provoking pychos into speeding ahead of them by cutting someone else off, then brake checking them. There are psychos out there, and genuinely safe drivers stay out of their way, and do not go out of their way to provoke them.

fatassbastard: The guy's a psycho, and of course his behavior is not acceptable, but there's no way the dad was just innocently driving along doing nothing when out of nowhere this driver started ramming his car.

Or just own it and when you start a fight, finish it.

You're still a partial douchebag.  I won't say you're a total douchebag because you do yield to faster traffic, but you're still admitting to driving in the passing lane.    If you're not passing someone, move right.

I'm not a partial douchebag at all. If you lived in Florida you would understand that if you don't go in the left lane, getting anywhere takes a LONG TIME.  Even in the left lane, you'll still get screwed by clueless grannies often.  My current job sucks, but I'm required to drive for a large portion of the day, and I would make a LOT less money (to the point of not being able to pay bills) if I stayed in the right lane except for passing. Most of my driving is on 2 lane roads, my example just happened to be on the interstate.

I've never been ticketed for any traffic infraction except for speeding once, and I was in the wrong, I'll freely admit.

Don't drive in Florida often if you want to keep your sanity!  I'm constantly applying for a "real" job, but the markets here can be tough.  But I digress.

I couple of weeks ago I had this lady in a minivan behind me flip out. She didn't try to ram me but she kept beeping her horn. I looked in my rearview mirror and she was--I swear--foaming at the mouth. She kept giving me the finger and banging on the dashboard. I felt sorry for her daughter who is the front seat, head buried in her cell phone, looking very uncomfortable.

What was my great sin? Traffic was backed up because of an accident and I was letting people who wanted to make a turn scoot in front of me. Every time I did this she would go nuts. I have no idea what possess such people to rage over being nice to someone else.

Sounds like you don't live in an area with tons of traffic. Around here both lanes are for travel. It just depends on whether you need to eventually take a right or take a left, even on the highway (thank you ConnDOT for all those left-handed exits). Relying on a gap to be there when you want to move over is a surefire way to miss your turn/exit. I don't think a single person drives the speed limit in the first place, so there's little reason to pass.

2014-02-14 01:26:07 AM
A few things...

1) In the state of North Carolina, they have removed all the 'slower traffic keep right' signs and they also removed any laws that state the same. There is no left/right lane thing anymore, they are just lanes. People are not required to move from the left lane for faster drivers. Especially ones over the speed limit.

2) I hate that they did this.

3) I think that once I got to the entrance of the store and saw this psycho chasing after me, I would have grabbed the first heavy blunt object I could get my hands on and solved the problem. Anyone who endangers or makes threatening moves towards my daughter is a dead man. I will happily serve whatever time I have to.

4) Having lived in Raleigh for over 20 years (in the past), I can tell you, the drivers there are something to behold. They are proud of the fact they drive to work while reading the paper, shaving, and eating breakfast.

5) 'Duel' is a great movie and I was terrified of old tanker trucks for months after seeing it as a kid. I always informed my parents if one got behind us.

I guess I'm probably guilty of internet tough guying here but if someone did that to me, I would want to kill him. I mean that my desire to kill him might outweigh my restraint, and that if I did not kill him at the scene, I might commit a first degree murder a little later on. It would be a boon to society for such people to die before they can hurt anyone else, to be honest.

In Florida driving in the far left lane of an interstate is a infraction unless you are actively passing, they have "slower traffic keep right" signs everywhere, try cruising in the left lane when a bored cop is around and ya end up with a 158 dollar ticket for violating lane restrictions. The letters to the editor page of the Florida Times Union has sob letters from seniors complaining about getting ticketed and vowing to never visit the state again fairly frequently, they make amusing reading.

True.  Sadly, you're actively passing a LOT on the interstate because many people either choose to go crazy fast (90+) or slow to a crawl (<65).  The speed limit is 70 but cops won't pull you over unless you're exceeding 80.  There's very little enforcement of that law due to the overwhelming number of senior citizens, but I do try to get into the middle lanes whenever possible for this reason.  If it's obvious that I'm going to be passing someone in the middle lanes within a minute or so, fark it, I'm not moving.  Otherwise, it gets very dangerous as people in the far right lane change to the middle fairly often (often after merging).

Indicators are used about 50% of the time it seems, so I try not to chance getting sideswiped to obey this law.  I would imagine it's enforced more in certain parts of the state, but thankfully where I drive it's not.

JadedFloridian: Pribar: knight_on_the_rail: Mr. Breeze: Warlordtrooper: Prey4reign: Mark Ratner: Stubby be trolling. The dad was the one was driving too slow in the fast lane. His daughter was a passenger.

I agree that fast lane idiots arbitrarily establishing what the speed limit ought to be is irritating to the max.  However, continuously ramming the slow driver on the highway and in a shopping center is just a bit over the top and fully worthy of a lifetime ban behind the wheels.

Fortunately many states disagree with you and have enacted laws to punish dangerous drivers (like you) who drive too slowly in the left lane. You're best just to move on over and leave the law enforcement to the cops.

Which laws punish people for driving the speed limit again? I think I forgot those ones.

In Florida driving in the far left lane of an interstate is a infraction unless you are actively passing, they have "slower traffic keep right" signs everywhere, try cruising in the left lane when a bored cop is around and ya end up with a 158 dollar ticket for violating lane restrictions. The letters to the editor page of the Florida Times Union has sob letters from seniors complaining about gett ...

Around Jacksonville the emphasis seems to be on keeping traffic flowing, unless you are actively obstructing traffic or driving so insanely ya might wreck and obstruct traffic they dont care. Around Gainesville its revenue generation, they have cops scouring the books for obscure laws to cite ya for, south of West Palm I'm not sure they have any traffic laws except try to make it home alive...

Heh.  Lemme guess...second lieutenant?

Q.  What's the difference between an E-2 and and O-1?

A.  The private's been promoted once.

Bane of Broone:

I'm not getting what you mean. I have a feeling that me living in the San Fernando Valley might be the reason.

If the area the license plate is from is more than 2 hours driving away, I give the driver of the car a bit of a pass. For me, the two nearest metropolitan cities are Indianapolis and Louisville, both a little over two hours. I've driven there enough to have a reasonable familiarity with the major roads, but I'm not an expert to traffic.

But if I see a plate registered to a county 30 minutes away, it is ON. That farkstick should know the rules.

My experience has shown me that 1) Women pull stupid moves in cars, and 2) men (especially older men) drive like they are the only people on the road - that is, without consideration that other drivers may want to drive a little faster in the left lane, or that other people don't want someone cutting them off when said older man wants to change lanes without checking their review mirror or blind spot.

Observe for yourself, nine times out of ten, slow drivers in the left lane (who won't move over) are older men.

That said, my fav move is, when I can get ahead of said left lane slow drivers is to slow down until they move over to the right lane and then re-pick up speed.

I was on a highway once with a slow car in the left lane and right line ... both right next to each other so I couldn't pass either one. There were no cars behind me or ahead of them. It was really annoying.

Another time, on a dark and snowy morning, I did go into the left lane to pass a car and then I went to check my mirror so that I could go back into the right lane but a super huge monster truck had sped up so close to me that I couldn't see anything behind me so I had no idea if I could get back into the right lane or not. So I was stuck in the left lane with him on my bumper ... so I just slowed down to an annoying speed and eventually he went away and I got back into the other lane. Tip: If you want somebody go to back into the right lane .. don't get super close behind them with a giant truck so that they can't see if the right lane is safe to go into or not.

Yup. Didn't get my father through WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Didn't get me through any dustups in sandboxes, either.
Terrible, terrible ammo.

So basically you gave someone the finger and ran away? If you're a woman that's a cool story, not so much if you're a guy.

More like he made sure to screw her by guaranteeing that she would have to wait for another light cycle, or risk getting pulled over for running a red light.  Gender is irrelevant.
