Finally some good new in the Catmandu household. I got approved for Social Security Disability so I will actually have something resembling an income. Money will still be tight but I won't have to rely on loans from family to get through the month. I still plan to work, but now I can find something part time that won't be as physically or mentally stressful. I am also hoping to get more referrals to do pet sitting. I can't walk dogs but I can definitely care for cats and small animals. One of these days I will remember to take my camera and get pictures of Ratchett and Riley to show you all now that they come out of hiding. Riley will even let me pet her a little (Ratchett still hisses if I get close). I go over there every other day while their hooman is recovering in a halfway house.

An oldie but goodie to make up for the wall of text:

Yeah !!  Round 2 is still coming down..  had rain and sleet after the snow last night, compacted it bigtime..  some freezing rain which melted this morning.. thunderstorm this afternoon followed by heavy snow which has changed to a light snow.. Doppler shows it almost gone.. no problems driving today but it was above freezing.. going down to 25 tonight, so tomorrow morning will be fun.... was watching folks trying to stop at the end of my block... serious acrobatics, a few fights, several wrecks.. mostly traveling too fast...

Yay !!   TGIC !    Good to be here and see y'all here too... now where is the cat in the field?

That is the truth! Last Friday we got more snow to total 24" deep or so. Traffic was either stopped, or 20 mph or.......zip, where did that truck go?

Small Animal Ambassadors 3. after I comment that Bree looks sweet & comfy with tongue (!) fetched by valnt9. So does Frodo w/o visible tongue, as The Italian Farker typed just above,  It may raise hackles if I query if stuffed giraffe is called Marius? Another Danish zoo trying to kill another giraffe after poor young Marius was done in. Point was, they didn't wish to let him breed & at 18 months he was nearly old enough. Other one also called Marius; may have been contagious, tho other is rather older. There were 2 zoos who offered to take in young Marius; may have been EuroUnionZoos reg that they couldn't.  Or just bad-assery on Copenhagen's part; they fed their Marius to the lions.
Promised she the photog & writer to fetch back your comments, after showering her with e'd compliments this AM.  Regret Lawrenceburg Chev ad, too lazy to white or colour it out.  What she wrote follows next. Also regret perennial inability to scan & crop straight.

my area got 5 inches. most of the roads are bare and wet already. BUT the freeze tonight will make the streets really bad until the sun hits them. they called off school for Thurs and Friday yesterday.

Yay, Caturday! Farking snow can stop anytime. Had to go to work this morning but at least my company had the decency to close us early so we could get home before it got really bad. It was still close, though - don't know if I would have made it home without 4 wheel drive. Most of the towns up here are very low on salt so they aren't treating the roads until the storm is over, or if they do it's very lightly.

Cracker Jack was so confused when I got home - he was like, "Whatcha doin' home, Mom? Aren't you supposed to be out making money to buy me food?"

They gave 1st shift at my job the option of not coming in tomorrow w/no penalty, though we have to use a vacation or personal day or eat the day w/o $. I'm a tweener; I work 11a to 7p but was afforded the option as well. I'll be playing it by ear. If it's still real crappy at 9:30 or 10 I'll call in. Wifey doesn't have that option; she has to be there at 7 but is leaving very early to give herself lotsa time.

It started snowing here around noontime but very little buildup for several; hours, then around 5:30 it started coming down harder and with MUCH larger flakes. Being so near the coast it's a crapshoot as to what we'll get (snow/sleet/freezing rain/rain) and if snow, how much.

Gonna be interesting tomorrow morning.

My car is currently sitting at the end of my driveway, stuck. It's off the road so it's staying there until sometime tomorrow when I get in the mood to go out and dig a path for it. I really hate that car , don't get a Jeep Cherokee.
They are such delicate vehicles, the least little thing will make it quit. The main problem is my driveway isn't paved so if I get stuck I can end up digging a hole.
I think I'm going to look for another car this month, something with AWD.

Offer conga-cats to catmandu on good sounding news.
I also got slightly good news, at least quantum_jellyroll, ArmednHammered & The Puce Guardian, plus anyone else like that I don't happen to recall, may think so -- finally got my newer Fourtune Cookie dual band hankie-talkie, the BaoFeng or more likely BaoFang, programmed by local clubmate during Tue eve rescheduled mbrs' mtg. Needs coupla more adjustments/tweaks, but this is first working one I've had since all the access tones went onto the repeaters (4-5 yrs best guess). Plumbicon found me a site that he put on my desktop for me, that may also let me Do Something with & about the bit-earlier Fourtune Cookie HT I never could get to work either.
For those who weren't in on 1st round, Fourtune Cookies is name of youth quartet from my chorus which can no longer compete because at least 1 of them is now older than Youth classification allows.
& also was lent Bigger Hammer by Sweet Adeline furrther upstate who's on regional contest cmte, to let me book a room for some of us for April contest rather later that I ought have. I'd left a comment on website, there was rumour floating that all rooms appeared to have been booked. All double-bed rooms, yes. Top-floor suites in Marriott right next door to Convention Ctr supposedly still available, but not for the Fri &/or Sat of contest. We've now 4 more chori, all competitors must stay at 1 of the other contract hotels or pay a $50 non-contract fine. This includes those who can't truly afford it, who need to stay where they live sted of one of hotels for reasons like care of cats or dogs. Have chorusmate like that, the EMT owned by cats, who'll be using room I booked to change in. Ought be able to arrange for her to "stay" 1 night there to avoid fine. Actually other 2 also owned by cats.1 of those owned dog who set her house afire trying to get snack from above stove; turned stove on & sadly died in resulting fire.

I have friends with a heated driveway. It cost a lot more than having a regular paved driveway but they think it is well worth it when all they have to do is flip a switch in the garage and watch the snow melt away, especially the older they get.

Oh - for those of you wondering about Bob Marley... not the reggae master.  The Maine comedian.  Funny stuff, if you can relate. :)

Don't believe able to load both 1 & 2 in same msg.  This not quite 50%; 850 from 1400 ot.

I don't know his background. Both he and his brother Cisco were shelter cats. Jack likes to sing like a Siamese so maybe. He goes downstairs where it's all echoie (is that a word? ) and sings so loudly that you can hear him throughout the house!

Everyone meet "Friend!" I named him that since we usually have 2 black cats who frequent our porch "Fluffy Black Kitty" and "Scragglers," and one day after work here was this friend with them, chillin out and eatin foodstuffs! So "Friend" he became. Sadly, a few days ago we saw him on the porch again and he was limping, his front right paw had what looked to be a small puncture wound in the wrist/forearm area.I opened the door to put more food off and he took off running, surprisingly agile for an injured kitty! Of course it's torn at my heartstrings and I wish we could take him to the vet. He's SO HANDSOME! He really needs to be an inside kitty! But we don't have a cat trap and I don't know if being trapped would cause him to injure himself more or whatnot. Anyway, this was from this morning, he showed up again and still limping :( I put out some wet food for the poor guy. I'm glad he can still get around well, I worry if he's in too much pain. :/

OlderGuy: John Buck 41: They gave 1st shift at my job the option of not coming in tomorrow w/no penalty, though we have to use a vacation or personal day or eat the day w/o $.

Got that right.... if you are getting winds off the ocean, you should be ok....  from the west, not good....

Here's the thing. I'm at the inside edge of a bay. A loooong bay, where a major river meets the Atlantic. It's tidal water, yes, but I'm not exactly 'on the coast' so any forecast I get has to be read with a grain of salt. Makes planning ahead during major wx events interesting.

Pineapples, gd luck getting Friend to Come Inside where he belongs. Gooshey Food may yet work as lure, reckon you'll see --  saw jellicle who visits here recently, outside, walking across snow that still bore icecap. Worried some on her account; she may actually live somewhere (hope so) & was able to be in when it was so awful.
Snuffybud, may be more like echoey than echoie. Spelling actually sometimes optional. Acoustics are why restrooms are so often used for quartet practise/warmups.
Rounds time not far, lessee what may be found for fetchable pic.

catmandu: Finally some good new in the Catmandu household.

Plumbicon's sorta hoping he isn't called to do Singing Valentines tomorrow. Pressed his red shirt which is spectacular; they all got 'em for contest ~2 yrs ago. Still not heard myself if section rehearsal's on for 10AM Sat; 2 have said so far they're unable. Pl said he could take me there, mayhap even collect me afterward (3 who live closest are tenor who no longer has wheels; baritone I bum rides from too often; & bass still on leave after either knee or hip replacement. Tenor & bari owned by cats).
Well-p, went thru menu on radio & seems to be no power adjustment. Reckon just need to holler into mic, which is less than approved 99.4% of time.
O yah, gremlin1, chorus dir & 2 of her neighbours had to push her car out of driveway Mon. 2-3 Cats own her, her wheels aren't a Jeep.

I am sorry the bulldog couldn't at least keep two of his friends. Bulldogs are awesome, and they are extremely loyal.

A bulldog helped me and my siblings learn to walk - true story. When we were trying to stand up as little ones, she would get in front of us and sit down. We'd grab her back and she would stand up and slowly start walking and lead us step by step.

I miss Brandy, she was a good dog.

Riddle me this...whyizzit that FARK always has a bunch of cool articles I want to read when I have other things to do...and when I've got time there's almost nuthin'...

D'Artagnan was being an absolute jerk last night...hissing, swatting, backing up to stuff like he was going to spray it...
"What the hell is your major malfunction? What do you want?"
Looked into his eyes and 'got it'...he wanted his chicken dinner!
"Can't you just meow and ankle-wind like the rest of the clowder? THAT I understand!"

Bathia_Mapes: Woot! :-)

The Ice Queen: Yeah! I always like it when my claimants call and let me know their final decisions! If you were Title 2 (SSDI), you might also be able to get some back benefits too which will be nice :)

akimbotoo: Yay!

iBette: Glad to hear it!  SSD can be hard to get, and nearly impossible the first try.

gremlin1: Glad to hear something is going your way.

laulaja: Offer conga-cats to catmandu on good sounding news.

quantum_jellyroll: Hurray!!!

syzygy whizz: YAY!
Heads-up for working while on disability...you're allowed to make up to $1,070 a month by working.
Anything over that, they start giving you the fisheye and you need to justify it.

sno man: I'm glad there is finally more good news than bad at your end, it's been a while since that's been the case.

Thanks everyone! This means a small but steady income and health insurance. Two big weights off my shoulders.

I love you all

Happy Valentine's Day!

TGIC! This is one of the first weeks in a long time that I've been excited for Friday!  I need the weekend to recover.  This has been a super busy week... and I *may* have to go find some coffee today to reward myself for living through it!  The cats have been very supportive of my need to nap most afternoons this week :)  I love my fuzzy babies sooooo much!  They have been wonderful and are helping me maintain some level of sanity :)

The guy and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day.  We try very hard to do things for each other at random when it's not expected so it has more meaning.  Not to mention the prices of things are so much higher... so we tell ourselves we're being financially intelligent by avoiding the expense of the holiday :)

Loving cat is... kinda touchy-feely... lol

Why does this remind me of Uncle Cabbage?? :D

Because that WAS me yesterday evening.  After the first round of shoveling, I went inside and spent the day drinking v0dak/cokes.  After that, the muscles were no longer sore, my attitude was no longer sore, and the snow was just a flyin' out of the way!  I even had energy to walk over to the grocery store and get a pizza and extra thing of pepperoni.  Yummmm!

Woke up at 2:45 this morning bloated and hungover as hell!  One bottle of Poweraide later and I was right as rain.  Well, rain with a gurgly sloshy stomache and odd-smelling gas, but much better.

Got up this morning and shoveled everything again.  Shot, shiwer and shake the main vane and here am I ready for more Caturday whakiness!

Let's start with a cat...

Hubby and I are the same way regarding Valentine's Day...why should we spend too much money on cards, dinner at an overcrowded restaurant, overpriced roses, etc when we can tell each other that we love each other anytime for free. The history of Valentine's Day is interesting, but now it has devolved into a commercialized day of nonsense.

Pineapples: [img.fark.net image 780x585]

Welcome, Friend.  May your foot and your future get better!

While all of you folks are digging out, we in Wisconsin are starting a warming trend that just may end up above 40° by the middle of next week! After weeks of a deep freeze that stuck in single digits and negative temps you just might see some of this:

I must still be hungover.  I read that as "peeing in the front yard" and wondered if he did it while standing up in that tree.  Then you said "big thing" and, uhh... I'll stop now.

While making clickie rounds short time ago,  came across this Most Worthy Project that You Too Can AbetAid&Assist With:
Music Therapy for 600 Shelter Animals
You can help eliminate stress, barking, and fear for shelter animals.
Shelter animals are often traumatized and fearful as a result of their challenging life experiences. In a typical shelter atmosphere, many animals are barking, meowing, whining, pacing, panting, shaking, and hiding in their cages and are too scared to interact with potential adopters. This limits their chances of finding forever homes.
The Rescue Animal Mp3 Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to donate 30 hours of calming music on Mp3 players to animal shelters and rescue groups across the United States. Specific musical compositions create a harmonious and enriching environment for the animals while also improving their health and behavior. Promoting relaxation through music can help animals cope with the stress of shelter environments and improve their quality of life. Dogs, cats, and other animals who are calm and well-behaved are also more desirable to adopt, increasing their chances of acquiring forever homes.

CSB:
When I was in my teens (shortly after the Carter era) my Dad got it into his head that he would save money by raising his own steers and slaughter them for beef.  So we built some crude pens in our big storage shed and set them loose on the upper yards to graze in good weather.  My siblings and I got the privilege of feeding and watering the steers in order to teach us responsibility (and to get my Mom off the hook of taking care of another one of the Dad-started and Mom-finished projects around the house).  In winter we kept them in the shed and kept our old radio on in the shed for the steers to listen to when we weren't there feeding or caring for them.

My Dad would set it to the country station, because of course all bovines were Christian Republican country fans.  My older sisters would set it to the pop music station (on days when it could be tuned in).  I would set it to the classical music station to see if the steers would get smarter from the intellectual stimulation of the music.  My (then) little brother would tune in a rock station that played punk music late at night.

So by the time we butchered the steers, we would have conservative, intellectual, pop punk beef in our freezer.  I tried to explain this to my parents, but they decided that the product of my humerous imagination meant I needed more chores to do.  So we get more steers.  Thanks Mom and Dad (not).

catmandu: Finally some good new in the Catmandu household. I go over there every other day while their hooman is recovering in a halfway house.

tigerose: Real Women Drink Akvavit: catmandu: Finally some good new in the Catmandu household.

I still plan to work, but now I can find something part time that won't be as physically or mentally stressful

You can DO that? I thought it was "I can do some work" or "I can't do any work" or I would have applied. They have been trying to get me to do so for the past year, but I know I can't survive in California on less than $800/month. That's just insane to even try.

Oh, and hai, everybuddy! I iz still alive, just still sickly so kinda scarce. I'm going to try and catch up before I need another nap. Typing and microwaving TV dinners so I do not starve is tiring, ya know. But I shall try!!!

Gremie is really an incredibly smart cat, at least for today.
He was in the kitchen working on a hairball. I'm sure everyone is familiar with that unmistakable sound.
As I walked into the kitchen in order to figure out where I had to clean up, he suddenly went running past me at full speed(pushing me out of the way) heading straight to the bathroom. Once he got to the bathroom he stuck his head over the litterbox and deposited his hairball.
I couldn't help but laugh because the way he ran to the bathroom reminded me of a little kid that waited to long. "Move it , out of the way, I gotta use the potty"

Lenore, my laptop, appears to be dying. :'-( Angrboda, my other laptop, is long dead and waiting for me to do.....something with her. Modgud (another desktop) is at my feet, awaiting her rebirth as a Linux box, so I can learn to use that as well. However, All is not lost! I have Laga (this desktop I'm using right now) and she is only a bit over a year old, so that's good. I'm backing up some of my stuff from Lenore and am then going to try to stay awake long enough to try to remember how to fix an old, slow, "your PC health is *picture of frowny face*" alerting machine. I wanted to backup some of my stuff first, because when I lose my patience, I like to wipe drives. So I started with the important stuff - the data file from My Singing Monsters. That game is over a YEAR OF MY LIFE. Also, some recipes and music I have on there. Because nothing says "pure happiness" like making blue cheese shortbread leaves while listing to Alghazanth. (to me. YMMV) Everything else can die in The Probably Impending Great Wipening for all I care.

That is pretty smart! The smartest thing Gogh Beastie has done lately is manage to lock himself in the closet/cupboard space at the end of the hallway and then bang on the door to be let out so loudly at 2 am that at first I thought someone was breaking into the joint, popped out of bed and grabbed a loaded handgun. NO ONE WILL TOUCH MY FAMBLY!!! (or my book, CD, skull or nail polish collections)

Holy Fark! Are you SERIOUS? What's the catch?

[4.bp.blogspot.com image 302x320]

No catch...this is from moi own experience. Been on disability for XX number of years, finally got tired of my life consisting of paying bills at the start of the month and then lying low for the rest. Was fortunate enough to get the job I have now...things are MUCH better!

They do a 36 month 'trial period' and then average what you make. If you make less than the stated amount, you are not considered to be able to do substantial (think that's the term) labor.

I ain't riding free, mind you...I do pay taxes, and I have a Medicaid spend-down every month (if you're working you may get some help with that as well. Do check it out...it can make a HUGE difference).

Caveat: RWDA, catmandu, YMMV. I'm only familiar with how it works in Montana.

akimbotoo...

Ain't Costco grand? Friend of mine and I went there today...he needed stuff, I had the card and he helped me unload afterwards. Dropped a bit over $200...which was about what I figured- I was out of just about EVERYTHING. My aunt says she loves/hates Costco...you go in for toilet paper and come out with a set of snow tires and a swing set (neither of which I purchased...today).

tigerose, RWDA...you might find the next bit worth going ( "Hmmmm...interesting!" )
One of the things I bought was a huge bag of spinach for dehydrating...another thing I'm almost out of. Latest thing I've tried it with is a handful of dried spinach in with the steamed broccoli...a bit of butter, tarragon, salt and fresh-ground black pepper.
It WORKS!

Weather forecast is for the 40's, thank Bast and FSM...I can run the dehydrator and Riktor can go outside to avoid it. For some reason, the white noise really bothers him...he gets absolutely frantic with the need to GET AWAY from it.

Nah, I got better, physically anyway.

I was going to ramble on about how Man-Friend announced yesterday that he thinks Valentine's Day is stupid and made up by the flower and card industry... and how all I wanted was a card.  It hurts, but fark it...

I helped teach Diddums about the PH scale and helped him with his first Science fair project.  His was either the best or pretty damn close.  He received a ribbon and a ton of compliments.  Made him feel great... and that's what I should focus on.

I started a new job... after being a stay at home mom for a long time... they like me a lot.  I have to admit that it was weird having my co-workers stare at my breasts.  It wasn't so much that they stared... Hell, when I worked before the male workers would try to throw pieces of paper into my cleavage and my boss would have me turn around slowly in front of him so he could check me out.  This was new, as the majority of the coworkers who stared at my breasts... were women.  New experience... don't care much... whatever makes you happy... but takes some lessons from the guys.  If you're going to stare at least try the quick glances up to the eyes and the bending your neck back to make it look like you are trying to make eye contact.

If it gets to the point I must apply for the SSDI, that will be good to know. Right now I'm getting by (paying rent only, which is kinda sorta "getting by" when you live with your fambly, I guess) on my very minimal private temporary disability insurance and making my cat fud and nail polish moneez on Amazon Mturk when I can stay awake for more than an hour or two. It really sucks. I could use the insurance too, though. That's something I hadn't thought of before.

I suppose I should talk to the doc about that on Wednesday too, huh? He's the one who thinks I'm disabled, just unsure for how long...

ouch, my tiny bit of remaining pride is hurting... (totally no offense meant - I'm just the stubborn I TOTALLY GOT THIS YOU GUISE! type, even if I've obviously broken bones and am bleeding, so it just kills me inside to admit I might not be OK. I mean BAD kills me inside.)

Thanks for the info. Since SSDI is federal, it should be the same in California as far as how much we can make/blah blah blah. Our cost of living here is really high, but still, that's quite a bit more than what I know they pay folks who are JUST on disability.

Not mostly frozen, just more than usual. From the Syracuse Post Standard earlier this week:
"Lake Ontario, traditionally the last of the lakes to freeze, has 32 percent of its surface area covered with ice. While that's by far the least of the Great Lakes, that's still nearly three times Ontario's long-term average of 11 percent."

The same article says Lake Erie is 96% frozen over, that'll stop Buffalo from getting much more lake effect snow this season. It'll cut down on my snow too as I'm on the west side of Rochester and lake snow from Erie reaches here way too often!

I didn't believe her so I looked it up and sure enough as of today Erie, Pa is #1 with 109.8 inches this season. No wonder I'm fed up with winter.Link top 10 cities of over 100,000 people

Jack is probably the only one happy about this.

This is one race I'm willing to lose. We're in third place. I did hear that Ontario is mostly frozen.

Glad to be of service?? Read an artical saying some of our invasive species may be frzn out. This would be awesome..and smelly in the Spring!

I passed my yearly physical today with flying colors. EKG showed the ticker is solid, cholesterol, BP, pulse...etc. are all spot on. Most of all the lungs sound great. Only issue is GERD, which I'll be starting Prilosec tomorrow. Not too shabby considering I've spent most of that past year on my ass in the man cave.

I'll be spending the day tomorrow tuning up my gym equipment now that I've been cleared. I've got about 60 pounds to lose. I've done it before...I'll do it again.

I haven't done much of anything lately, and it's just all really depressing. When AH took me for my last blood draw cuz I was too tired to drive myself, he slooooooowly eases himself out of the car, being very careful with his apparently forever not right leg, walks around the car, takes me by the arm and just stared at me for a minute. Then he said "We had a good run, sweet heart. We really did." and gave me a little kiss on top of my head. I felt so ooooooold, but he's right. We did.

A few minutes later he snickered and said "you're getting silver hairs up there" and I wanted to smack the crap outta him.

I know he sees a lot of folks on MediCare - he's cheap, that's why I see him - so he may even have someone at his office who can help me with it. I'll find out, I guess. lilyspad: GGracie: I have to admit that it was weird having my co-workers stare at my breasts.

Um, and you said or did nothing about it? Were you like totally flashing cleavage, or are you just "full figured"? I would have put a stop to that right away!

It's more just large breasted.  38-G, which is why I am GGracie.  I wasn't flashing the twins, but with a 38 inch chest with G's attached... they do get noticed.  To be honest, I don't really care if people stare.  I am VERY used to it.  I have a flat stomach... that spends a lot of time in the shade.  It doesn't make me uncomfortable... I just thought it odd that the women stared so obviously.

The boobie fairy visited me when I turned 14.  I went from nothing to DD's in a very short period of time.  My background is in Human Resources, so I am well versed in sexual discrimination/harassment.  As with many things in the work place, it's not a problem until it's a problem.  I don't feel it necessary to file a complaint over something that happens to me when I go to the grocery store or the gas station.  The only challenge I face from it is that I have to work a bit harder than others to gain true respect as people do have some bad notions about large breasts.  I've heard women whispering to each other "Are those real???".  Yes, who would do this to themselves on purpose???

There have been a few occasions when I did have to respond to co-workers who were committing serious sexual discrimination/harassment.  One locked me in my office and kept me there for 20 minutes while he explained to me that I "obviously wanted it".  I did have him fired.  Another co-worker came up and leaned over my desk to look down my shirt and said "You're serving up quite a load today", then had all of the male employees come up to my desk to do the same thing.  It was my first job, and although I was the personnel manager I didn't complain, I just wore baggier tops.  That was purely unprofessional behavior on everyone's part, including mine.

Now much wiser, I can handle even the biggest jackasses.  I can't force people to not look.  I'm not that big, but my breasts are.  I would just come off as a hellish biatch if I complained every time someone lost eye contact with me.  But take it beyond that... and I will act.  Sometimes it is as simple as saying something like "Rude much?  Try to remember your manners."  and then shake my head.  It reminds them without me being a total biatch.  Beyond that and the gloves are off.  Try to touch them or pretend to motorboat them and you will be looking for new employment.  A lot of it also has to do with my behavior.  If I wear tight shirts and obviously show off the twins down to an inch above my nipples while talking about BJs, then yes, I had it coming.  I shouldn't be acting like that at work, just as much as someone shouldn't assume that a nearly six foot tall redhead with large breasts is obviously a slut.

People come from different backgrounds and sometimes they are immature or think they can get away with it.  I deal with each person and each event as I feel that I have resolved it to where I feel comfortable.  It's a much more effective way to earn respect than to run to my manager each time I catch someone's eyes falling short of my chin.  I know who I am, what I look like and where I go to sleep.  If I were so insecure about my body that I freaked whenever someone checked out the twins, I would never leave the house.

Real Women Drink Akvavit:

You haz mail (and it's a book). I put off applying for years.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: syzygy whizz: Real Women Drink Akvavit: syzygy whizz: Heads-up for working while on disability...you're allowed to make up to $1,070 a month by working.

If it gets to the ...

SSDI is actually based on what you've paid into the system. Every couple of years you should get a little thing from SSA stating that if you were to retire now, you would get xx/month. SSDI also expires, the shelf life is about 5 years or so after you stop working/paying into the system. There is also a waiting period of 5 months before benefits kick in from date of onset. Say if you are found disabled as of today, your benefit wouldn't kick in until July or August! That's why we try and push the onset back as far as we can go to try and eliminate that waiting period (like instead of being found disabled as of today, we are able to find you disabled as of last February, you'll get your benefits will kick in as that 5 month period is up - big PIA). Govt and public sector employees don't pay into Social Security. We pay into something else. Therefore, if we're found disabled, we get our benefits from whomever handles our pension and actually can only apply for Medicare. You can get around it by working a non-public sector job (like I do because Sallie Mae owns my ass and then some) but again, since I'm not contributing as much towards the system now, it would affect my benefits if I ever have to file.

SSI is income/resource based and its basically a set amt, want to say like $800/month give or take. Anything else that comes in, like pensions, structured settlements, Worker's Comp benefits, etc, will drop that amt by so much. Its some freaky calculation that the field offices do and we have no idea how they figure it out on the medical end.

The system is also really weighted towards the over 50 crowd. If you're under 50 you can almost forget it. Not that it can't happen, I've helped get claims approved for those under 50 but we're talking really sick people here. Like on dialysis, terminally ill, getting organ transplants, been in/out of psych hospitals with stays of months. 50 is the magic age and every 5 years, you get more factors in your favor. If you're over 60, its almost a given. However, I've been unable to approve people over 60 before (doesn't happen often but you get one every now and then) and it really sucks because you are totally running every freaking option you can and still run into the dreaded brick wall :(

Not sure if offices have people on staff for that. I know some of the larger facilities do but definitely worth checking into.

Also, if you decided to get an atty, PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH AND DON'T THINK BECAUSE THEY HAVE TV COMMERCIALS THEY ARE THE BEST! Granted, I don't know CA attys so can't help you there but we tend to have the biggest problems with some of the larger organizations. There are some that are really really awesome and others when you see the name you're like CRAP! I've seriously had to deny claims because the reps don't allow us to contact the filer for any reason (like to get ADL information to see if we're permitted to schedule exams or testing if needed) and we're supposed to go through them. However, they never call us back and we have no choice but to deny for insufficient. In those cases, I always make notes stating that it was due to the atty's non-cooperation that led to the denial, the filer can do what they want with that information.

Just do your research and you'll be ok if you decide to get an atty to help out :)

Cooks do not make a lot of money, even when we become chefs. I've had a few jobs where I've been in the restaurant as an independent contractor/consulting chef, but cooking full time for them. I've been self employed for a couple years now. Catmandu told me a few things about how long it takes even if you're on top of things, and I'm under 50 still, so since my private insurance only covers my temporary disability until the end of December, I should apply now.

I do have multiple health issues and by all rights should be crippled or dead, but I'm pretty darn tough for a little cream puff. I suppose in the interest of self preservation, I need to totally wuss out for a while. At least I'll have a shot at MediCare so I CAN go back to work, IF I can be fixed. If not - I seem to have a natural talent for nail art. I can go to some schoolin' for that. Or I can look into something with a more academic flavor. I wonder what folklorists actually do besides be incredibly cool in between random History Channel appearances? Hmmmm........

So, the big dog jumped up on the counter and ate $20 worth of steaks.  She's had some powerful farts since.

She was SAVING YOU! Imagine if you'd eaten those! You'd be showing up in the telescope at Griffith Observatory as a previously undiscovered gas giant. Tell her "good girl! YOUR SACRIFICE SAVED US ALL".

I posted pictures of Sadie and her nameless little sister last week, this week she has a name. Meet Mya. I have no idea where they came up with the name.
My niece works in the office at a nursing home and the employees are allowed to bring their pets to work. Mya went to work this week and had a great time visiting with the residents and she even went to a staff meeting. My niece is planning on taking her to work at least once a week because it's a great way to make sure she is well socialized also it's great for the residents.

GGracie: lilyspad: GGracie: wait, did I just say more important than sex???

You must still be feverish......

You could always wear a pin or necklace that says "yes, they're real" That would fix them, or at least make them embarrassed that they looked! :D

Good morning, Caturday type people! So, around 3 am I wake up (that's normal for me, btw) and notice this moth that has been in our house for a few days now has decided it likes my bathroom better than the area near my coffee pot. The Gogh Beastie also really likes my bathroom, because he can hide under the sink and get into my extensive collection of goops and creams and eyeliners and lipsticks and whatnot if I am not careful to put the lids on the cosmetic storage bins back on very tightly when I am done playing with them. So I bet you can figure out what happened to the moth. It sounded like WWIII going on in there and a bunch of my stuff ended up on the floor, something that usually only happens if Gogh is redecorating or being very nosy. I had no idea he'd go that insane for a moth, especially since it had been in the house for a few days at this point. I thought Gogh Beastie was just like the hippie dippie Flower Power kitteh of non-aggression toward everything. Apparently he does not like bugs, though. Or maybe he DOES like bugs and just views them as a nice appetizer before his morning gooshy noms. He did show it to me before he ate it, though. I was appropriately proud of him - my 16 pound cat took out a moth that probably weighed less than a snowflake ALL BY HIMSELF! He also didn't break anything or eat any of my lipstick collection this time. (which is the less direct way of putting lipstick on his own butt, I guess) Good boy, Van Gogh Beastie!

catmandu: yobbery: I passed my yearly physical today with flying colors.

Did you get a scrip for the Prilosec? If not, email me and I can give you my source for inexpensive OTC.

Yes, I have a script. Thank you!

One strange thing I forgot to mention is she ordered an HIV and HEP C tests??? In my typical smartass fashion I snapped back with "Is there something about your index finger you need to tell me about?" Must have been an original because it gave her a case of the intermittent giggles for a few minutes. Anyway, they are NIH recommends that anyone born between 19blah and 19blah-later have these tests done.

HIV....there's no way. HEP-C...slight possibility. I've worked in a hospital for 25 years now and more importantly my mother contracted HEP-C when she was in the nursing home.

Last year (not this last hospitalization, but the one before it) I had to have blood transfusions because of my anemia being so severe. I did not know they did that. What I also did not know, is they wanted me tested for HIV afterward. Twice, some months apart. I said "Where dafuq they get their blood? Isn't it tested or anything? OMGs!!!" because maybe like you, I was a teen in an era where we were just identifying "GRID" and then we found out anyone could get it, and it was super scary and everyone is gonna die. Being an inner city type Angeleno, I did know people who eventually died of it. To this day, even though I know better than to freak out over it, I still do freak out a tiny bit inside when I hear "HIV" even if they're just talking about the test.

Blood testing before giving the blood to someone is done, just like we all know, but "things can happen". Luckily (expectedly???), they did not happen to me. If you also were spending your adult formative years during that same period of time I was turning into a little "can now be tried as an adult in most states" terror, I can only imagine what that felt like to be told they wanted to test you for HIV. Actually, I can't "imagine" it. I REMEMBER it. It was awful. It was an accusation and a doom sayin' and a whole bunch of other stuff all rolled into one crappy package, wrapped in lab forms and cloaked in clinic-speak. They totally damaged us* psychologically back in the day, you know. Just know that YOU WILL BE FINE. I think it's more the psychological blow and my perception of it being an insult (totally unfounded and I KNEW it was an unfounded perception of being insulted) that set me off more than actually believing "OMGs! They just killed me trying to not let me die!" The chances of me having it from ANY source were exceptionally low, so I just took the gut punch, got my tests when it was the time to do so and everything was fine.

/*or maybe that was just me that got a bit dinged in the head back then
//I really doubt it, though
///at least I didn't even a teeny tiny bit buy into the "marijuana, black clothing, horror movies and/or enjoyment of heavy metal musical acts causes prostitution, Satan worship, murderous rampages and brain damage" crud

YAY!!! If I have the energy today, I will do mine! I have this lovely purple velour wench style patchwork blouse (so there are other colors on it - the background color is purple) that I think I can actually match (color wise) on my nails. I have already gathered a few colors from my collection of Julep polishes and will look at them a few times during the day, until I figure out how/what to do with them to honor the awesome wench blouse.

/Plus what goes for intelligent conversation on Fark is "you're an idiot" "no, you're an idiot"

But this is Fark, not Reddit. Why would anyone ban you here? We do not cry like little girls with skinned knees and then bring down the ban hammer on people who think they are slighting us by not liking the same things we like. That would just be silly.

Just look at cats and be happy, then go on your merry way, spreading sunshine and joy. It's kind of the point. That's why this is "Caturday on Fark" and not a meeting of the National Coalition of Independent Scholars.

Here, have a kitten!

Oh, wow. I lost track of time and did not realize how many years I was on Fark before I even signed up for an account (and how much even longer it was before I quit lurking!). I remember the Early Years of Caturday! I actually remember pre-Caturday Fark. Which is scary, in its own way.

Do we get an official old-timers badge for lurking? lol! I bet there's a ton of folks who have been around that long as well and who never did de-lurk.
